  •  I didn't care for it (none / 0)

It was the wrong choice of music (although that song is cool) didn't get my blood pumping.
    •  well, (none / 0)

it wasnt meant to. It was suppost to cover the other side of GEARS which has a very deep story.

Blowing stuff up, awesome graphics, some awesome rock song..that's the type of commercial that would get me pumped for  a game like Gears.

I just thought this whole commercial idea was kind of misguided. Like the game is supposed to be a sad soap opera. But it's okay as a change of pace as you say, maybe.

the game's ad delivered on awesome graphics and had some immersion from the ground. But there has never been, and will never be rock music in GOW. It is way to cliche for the genre and takes away from the storyline. I mean EPIC knows how to interpret rock in-game, look at Unreal Tournament. But UT is a MP game and EPIC wants to show people that a shooter game can have depth in plot, and not be stupid. Which i think is very important for next-generation games if we want to see some new, original stories for games.

And also, a major them in GOW is destroyed beauty, the score of the song alone fits that theme as well as the lyrics "mad world" which refer in a way to the whole blowing up their own planet thing. Also  the immersion stuff too. I like metal and rock just fine, its just when it is added to a game, it really just makes it very cheesy.

The only exception to this is when in Halo 2, when the theme starts playing with guitar in one of the earlier levels when you see the giant robot thing. That was excellent pacing and the rock music (done by Steve Vai btw) fit in excellently. But that again is halo, GOW is a whole different (dare I say complex?) game. :)

          Thats my take.

          •  Well said (none / 0)

Microsoft is right in trying to portray Gears as "something different." If rock music was used, while it would fit fine, it wouldn't say anything extra about Gears. Halo's soundtrack is very well made and you can tell they planned it to a T, punctuating high-action moments with rock while keeping most of the music more classical/tribal-esque.

That song is so overused it's amazing. The only reason they used the song in the first place was because of the lyrics "Worn our places, Worn out faces".  That's a terrible reason to use a song, it would be like using "A Day In The Life" for a coffee ad and having the action follow the lyrics so it would go a guy wakes up falls out of the bed, combs his hair, gets coffee which allows him to make it to the bus in time. That's such a terrible reason to use a song. There is nothing complex about the use of music in the trailer, it's trite and lame. The only thing worse is when they change lyrics in the songs to include the product being plugged. Now I'm at the point where I can't hear Whip It without thinking of Swiffer.

As for myself, I hadn't heard that song very many times before, so it doesn't feel overused to me (I'm not saying that it isn't, just that that doesn't bother me). Also, the lyrics fit in many more places than just that one. I agree, by using a popular song it's not the most original thing, but it's still far more original than any other trailer for any other shooter I've ever seen.

            •  actually (none / 0)

it isnt overused to about 99% who dont know Donnie Darko or search the web.

I mean, tons of people thought that the music was new.

              •  Definitely going to argue with you there. (none / 0)

It's been in a few other adverts and tv shows. And not just that version, I think there are shows where people are like "Oh man, the Gary Jules version has been done to death... Lets use the original."
Just because some people have lives and have never heard the song doesn't mean that I don't think it's wayyy overused and used very poorly in this instance.

You mark my words, in a few months you're going to see a Secret Deodorant ad that features a Meter Maid and the song "Lovely Rita, Meter Maid" and you're going to cringe.
