Gears of Politics

Seems like in the video linked in another diary, there are plenty of politics in gears of war.
I know this will be a fantastic game no matter what they do with it, but does anyone think that a shooter with chainsaw bayonets really has the grit to do a cameo of the current geopolitical situation?

Vote for Fenix.

but I am a person who does not take politics seriously what so ever.

I remember when i saw V for Vendetta.

Everyone was talking about how it was a political movie, when in fact, it was the exact same storyline of the comic which was written long before this time.

Also, i just thought it was an AWESOME movie.

So politics in games are good if they are done right. It seems that the storyline in GOW takes what was already an issue (oil resources etc) and make it into a HUGE deal in the game. What this does is present an idea without stating an opinion torward it, which is good.

Back to V for V, it is similar to how OVER THE TOP the governments security was in the movie, it was a similar concept of what was being discussed in the world today, but they took it and made it into a HUGE deal in that story.

I love political ideas in games as long as they are done right and most importantly, dont make their opinions UBER OBVIOUS.

    Thats my take

I totally agree with that. Also, there's a difference between making a straight-up political statement and making a good story with political undertones. I think the politics in Gears will add to the realism of the story. As far as basing it off of our current situation with energy crises, etc., that's how science fiction has worked for years: making up solutions to current problems. I don't think Gears is necessarily anti any one group, either. Sure, it deals with an energy crisis and a government with "too much power." But at the same the Locust are a "terrorist" threat bent on "our" destruction, and the role of the military is clear.

Right now, it just looks like Gears is shaping up to having a deep, involved story.

I want to add my two cents.  I think the political undertones are good, it brings the shadow of surprise from a 3rd corner you don't necessarily see in a good versus evil storyline.  The great games have this, for example, Halo has Human vs. Covenant vs. Flood.  It brings a dynamic to the game.  Now, I'm not saying it will be as significant in GeOW, but possible.

I have a nagging question of what happened to the whole planet of Sera?  COG is just one of many factions that took part in the wars before the Locusts, and it would be interesting to see if there was more than one last stand of humans versus the Locusts.

Further, in another trailer, there were also religious undertones that could rise up in the game.  Inter-political struggles within COG between those trying to save law and order, those who see armegedon and holy wars, and then there could be the McCarthy arch-type of hardliners who are still fighting the old wars.

GeOWs could throw all these wrenches into the machine of survival on Sera.

        How do you like that!

Could be fun and I can't wait to see.

Ready to finish all the Fights!

Just leave it out, Cliffy. Like I dont get enough of that elsewhere..how stale and uncreative.

Honestly that turns me off. But since that's a side point to the action of the game I dont mind too much.

I can't think of any good science fiction that doesn't have some form of politics involved.
