Locust Rifle?

Mon Nov 13, 2006 at 07:23:54 PM EST

Well I've been vigorously playing Gears both single player and multiplayer since release.  I am just astounded at how good this game is graphically, gameplay wise, and everything else-wise.  There is obviously the issue of team ranking which everyone is already whining about, which I agree with, and totally hope something is done to fix this.  I also am trying to deal with the issue that I can enter a ranked game, start the game off, and have someone leave either my team or my opposing team and leave it at an uneven match for the rest of the duration.  That all aside...there is something that REALLY REALLY bothers me:

Is there any good reason why anyone would use a Locust Rifle?

I figured in single player..okay whatever, they drop off the locusts and are placed randomly in the map but I never understood why anyone would want to use it.  It didn't bother me as much though until I played multiplayer.  Every map has the weapon spawns, and so far, every weapon has its own use.  But there are spawn points in multiplayer maps that have the Locust gun, and to me it just feels like a waste of a weapon.  What are you trying to do with this gun, Epic?  Is there any chance you can replace it with a more USEFUL gun?  I don't see why I'd use this gun over my Lancer, as they are both midrange, but the Locust gun is burst-fire and has no chainsaw, whereas the Lancer is mid-range, fully automatic, and has a chainsaw slapped on it.

Please enlighten me, am I missing something here?  Or is this gun just a filler for something yet to come?  Maybe I haven't realized the true usefulness yet but I am yet to see anyone else boast about this gun or even use it.

create a game, you can swap what-ever weapon you want on the map. So you could put all of this or that weapon.

The hammerburst is an excellent gun, but is hard to get good with. It is actually more effective than the lancer long range and close range sports an excellent chance of headshots.

I reccomend practicing with it, but the option is their to take it out on your own will in multiplayer.

This option isn't there for ranked matches, I don't think.  But you say it's better for long or close ranges?  It can headshot?  Well, this I didn't know but, I dunno, I guess i'll try it out, but it seems a bit iffy to me as I said.  Any more opinions out there?

It doesnt do any decapitation, but it is useful for shooting people in the head because of its burst-fire option.

  •  More power (none / 0)

The hammerburst (is that what it's called?) is more powerful than the lancer, but you have to work harder to control it to make your shots count since it fires in bursts. It's not good for engaging multiple enemies, but it definitely gets the job done for going against one.

Agree with you guys for the most part, my only complaint with the Locuts gun is that it's blind fire is HORRIBLE...... I know blindfire is obviously never an exact science and they all stray pretty far but this one is the worst, the Lancer has a much small hole of where the rounds go even if you fire an entire magazine at once.

But yeah it is a good weapon.  The melee dosn't leave you nearly as helpless as the chainsaw.

  •  I tested it out after reading your entry... (none / 0)

and if you can land 3 quality bursts its enough to down your opponent. Also, the melee is alot faster and doesn't leave you as open. But i gotta say, the lancer/chainsaw is so much more gratifying.

Melee>Chainsaw...you can still use the melee function when being shot...chainsaw? not so much
plus it has more max ammo, more power, more acc

well I can't thank you guys enough for your input.  I am compelled to try this out now.  I will give it another chance, although I must admit I didn't give it a real chance in the beginning.  Well I do agree with you that melee>chainsaw, that I can't argue with.  But my arguement originally was in situations where you are caught offguard, such as when you are in cover and someone just rolls up next to you and starts revving their chainsaw, with the Lancer you can just spray as you back up but with the hammerburst you have this small interval of no fire in between and it can give them enough time to rev up and catch you in their chainsaw blades.  Nevertheless I am very compelled to give this a real shot, and I will report back with my thoughts.
