My own Review of the game

Sat Nov 18, 2006 at 12:25:57 AM EST

After completing the Single Player on Hardcore, and half way through Insane and having a good deal of time on multiplayer, I think I am finally ready to write a review of this game, and to make everyone happy, I will start with the positives.

I guess I will start with the graphics, because that is what drew most people in.  Like everybody knows on this website, they are amazing, never seen anything better, and they continue to amaze me that a game can look this good.  Now more importantly, how it plays.  The cover system is absouletly genius.  It works perfectly for the game with the awsome A.I. and taking cover is a synch.  Cover works, nothing cannot be taken cover behind as long as it is realisticly possible, and it actually acts like cover.  Next up is the weapons, for the most part a great balance of weapons that all do their job agianst the Locust Horde, and do a great job in multiplayer of keeping everything balanced.  Finally, I will add on that the A.I. in this game actually dosent suck for once, they know how to fight, and it suprised me when a enemy flanked and chainsawed me in single player, usually the A.I. just kinda stands there waiting to die.  Now, for my complaints

I am a firm believer in the notion that nothing is perfect, and even though this game is great, its not perfect.  I will start off with the most noticable problem, they story.  I have to just break off right now and say it totally sucks, it really dosent follow anything but your Marcus, you have a big gun, and you shoot bad guys.  I wanted history of Emergence day, flash backs, people that you could actually make connections to and feel bad when they died. (I could care less when Carmine and Kim died, played with them for about a level, no connection).  Heck, just a cut scene seeing what the guys are like would be nice.  Next on the list is music, it really dosent incite fear or a sense of epic in me, really dident hear any of it, I wanted epic music blasting into my ears as I took down hordes of enemies, but instead I get some generic music.  Lastly, the multiplayer is lacking.  All 3 games are basically minute differences of eachother.  I was hoping for some objective type games, maybe being able to make a clan, but thats just not possible.  Dont get me wrong, multi rocks, but I wish it just had more.

Don't get me wrong from the huge complaints list, easier to complain then compliment.  This game is great and I play it everyday, and all of the greviances are pretty minor (except the story, only the end gave me hope for more story in the sequel if they make one).  And for these reasons, I am gonna go tough on Cliffy and give this game a 9.3 out of 10.  Nothing is perfect in this world, not even the best of games, and this is by far a must-buy this year, forget PS3, get this.

  •  story (none / 0)

i'm not sure about your comment on lack of story, i thought the story is pretty good and some of the big names (Eric Nylund) has contributed to it. i think i agree with the rest of stuff. the attention to detail is really mind blowing, you know when marcus is standing next to a cover after taking a few shots and the heat coming out of his rifle creates a dancing flame like image on the building, amazing. can you rate all the game aspects you talked about from 1 to 10.
  •  I actually disagree (none / 0)

with your point about not forming connections to characters. I will say that the story is very, very subtle, but for me, that was enough. Carmine was the tragic case of an ignorant, young soldier. I knew from the beginning that he was going to die (someone has to make room for Cole and Baird, after all) but I was actually sad when it happened. When Kim was killed, on the other hand, I didn't feel sad. Here was an experienced veteran who knew what he was getting himself into. For him, dying in battle was the ultimate sacrifice and the ultimate honor. Carmine, on the other hand, is just another dead kid. I felt that.

It may be because I've spent a year familiarizing myself with the story of Sera that I wasn't let down by Gears in that department. If I hadn't read the character descriptions on IGN, or seen the flashback videos on gearsofwar.com, or listened to the many interviews with Cliffy, then perhaps I wouldn't have appreciated the story in the game. Maybe people will say that more of the story elements should be included in the game, and not presented in other mediums (like on the web in videos, etc.) only. I disagree, however. I love that video game stories can spawn different media and that we can immerse ourselves in a story before getting to play the game. It makes the game much more enjoyable for me, and this was definitely the case with Gears.

  •  Not saying cutscene was bad, (none / 0)

It was by far the best in the game, I just seemed to feel nothing for Kim when he kicked the bucket, just another dead guy like some locust I just killed

Had a little bit of black hawk down feel to it.

if you have never review a game (which is obvious you never have) don't. You talk about how bad the A.I., cutscene, story and multiplayer is, yet you give the game a 9.3 out of 10. It seems to me as if you only got the bad and not the good. If the game "truly" lacks A.I., beat the game on insane by yourself. Let's see who is the A.I. lacking. You clearly talk nothing good about the game, so why does this game should achieve a 9.3 out of 10? Also you didn't even bother to break your review into sections such as, graphics, storyline, sound, game-play, last comments and so on. Also, did you just took a score nearly identical to ign just so your opinion to be heard?

The point of this was to say the A.I. was amazing

  •  Clans and more multiplayer modes (none / 0)

Heck yeah, this game could be even better if there were more multiplayer modes. Check my diary for a new multiplayer mode I conjured up. Clans would be awesome too and there could even be a tournament of small four player teams for a great prize, it could even be corporate sponsored. I think that would really promote the brand.

As far as people complaining about the lack of story details, I have to disagree. I think Epic intentionally did this so as to keep the game moving. Most hardcore gamers will skip cutscenes and get to the action, in this game you cannot but the cutscenes are of tolerable length and they pit you right back into the action. It's as if you play the cutscenes. Think of the scene at the top of the House of Sovreigns where you machine gun Locust from the rooftop to clear then landing zone for the choppers, that could've been a cutscene.

I do agree that for any gamer that just hops into the game they wouldn't know too much about the story. But the manual does offer background and for someone like myself who strongly anticipated this game since attending E3 this year, I acutally knew more an average gamer. I found myself explaining details to my brother while working through the campaing on co-op.
