Band of Bro's

After all this time, I cannot believe I never made the connection between the two.  I LOVE Band of Brothers, seen it about 12 times and if any of you have not seen it, I totally recommend it.  After watching it agian over the course of this week, I finally see what I think Gears will be like, except in movie form.  The story starts as a group of guys just bent on killing krauts because thats what they were expected to do from training.  When they finally got into war, they saw what all the hell was about, saw freinds die in horrible ways, and questioned why the world was as it is.  And this, I believe, is the prime example of what Gears is going to be.  I hope not to see that Marcus may be some marine-badass who just likes killing stuff.  I wanna see Marcus break, see what he has missed out in prison, see what this war has done.  This is what makes Games stories legendary, and I think this is exactly how its gonna turn out.

That's hardly creative. That disillusioned soldier motive has been around..since mankind.

Fine if you like it. it's just a little uncreative for me. I'd rather see something new, like a story where a soldier realizes a war is necessary and becomes rededicated to fighting for the cause.

has called refered to band of brothers alot as inspiration. Also, he calls Marcus, Dom, Gus, and Baird "a band of brothers like squad"

though you would like the connection.

Also, i have the whole Box set, GREAT GREAT series.

I really don't see a band of brothers connection at all. As a matter of fact, if you replace the "krouts" with "aliens" then you have the movie Aliens. Wow look at that.

¥ou just described the movie Aliens too.

people are just busy obsessing about GEARS these last few days.

But back to the whole Band Of Brothers thing.

I believe the idea is a very good one (hence why it is used alot) It makes for a great story, just as say "one persons story of getting revenge for his loved ones" is too.

There is a reason this concept is used alot, because it works.

Thats like saying "there are too many games with guns that are about shooting things"

Are there alot of shooter games? Yes.

But only because they are really fun.

But when I hear someone compare something to Band of Brothers I think a different kind of epic then what Gears is bringing to the table. It's nothing like Band of Brothers other than the fact that there is some "camaraderie" in gears but probably not on the level of Band of Brothers. Seriously in scope the game seems more like Aliens than Cliffy would like to admit, and I don't see why he won't. Aliens is a great action sci-fi movie, probably one of the best.  Cameron took what Scott did and gave it more life via a tangable universe.  I think gears is going to be about as epic in scope as Aliens, and if that's the case you're going to get a great game. But don't bullshit me with this Band of Brothers crap, there is no way it's going to come close to touching what was going on in that series.

you compare something to Band of Brothers, doesnt mean it is AS much of an emotional rollercoaster ride. Its just the main idea is there, "4 completely different guys fighting to survive whilst learning to live with one another" Its a bringing together of different types of people, all for being the last hope mankind has.

GEARS OF WAR is a videogame filled with killing aliens and being a badass. But if you look deeper, you will find their are more complex themes than most people will give it credit for.

But it does. If you go, well it's like band of brothers. Then people are going to expect alot more than what gears is going to offer in terms of themes and story. Seriously you can say that about any fucking movie.

"Well Jaws was just a movie about a shark, but if you look deeper it was really about a bond between 3 men stuck at sea who really just needed a bigger boat.

Aliens was just a movie about space marines blowing shit up, but if you look deeper it's a character study about one groups journey through hell.

Terminator 2 was just a movie about machines taking over humnaity but if you look deeper you'll see that it's actually bringing us nearer to the future it fortells thanks to super speical effects!

The Last Unicorn may have seemed like a harmless tale about the last Unicorn, but if you look really deep inside the film you'll see parallels to the holocaust.

When you compare you game to a film you don't pick the film that the game is least like.

that the main inspiration form BoB is not so much the story as it is the gameplay. Cliff looked at Band of Brothers and saw that people weren't just running around shooting each other, they were taking cover, providing suppressing fire, blind firing, using smoke and frag grenades effectively, and occasionally getting caught in up close melee encounters. That sounds A LOT like Gears of War to me.
