Who's going to die?

Sun Jan 21, 2007 at 12:19:08 AM EST

Now; this is a speculative diary and this forum seems to have jumped to more strategy and xbox stuff than Carmine and Kim.
So, I go into this with an expectation of no one really caring. But, just to sate my own desire, who in Delta is going to be the next one to die?
I don't think it'll be Baird; the cynic never dies. He'll stand on everyone elses graves and say "told you to do (such and such a thing) but did anyone listen to me? Nope, yada, yada."
Marcus isn't going to die because he has to survive for part III.
Dom; now, dom is the best friend. The best friend usually seems to kick the bucket in the end. But, Dom is also a victim with the death of his wife, and he's super loyal to the squad. I don't know. I think he's been suffering too much. He'll probably be behind Baird building a garden for his pinata.
That leaves Cole. I wouldn't go out on a limb to say that he's going to die, but I definently think he's the one to watch. My reasons are multiple: for one, the black person always dies in science fiction (this isn't closet racism at all, I've just noticed that the white astronaut always stays alive more than the other demographics). Always. And if they don't die, then they probably get screwed anyway (case in point: Lando Calrissian in Star Wars Episode V). He's also the one to volunteer for any mission needed.
Colonel Hoffman is never in the line of fire, and Anya, well, she might pull a cortana, but I think she would be too well defended. Besides, if they needed to detonate a bomb; they would probably just leave Jack.
So, who are you getting ready to lose?

I dunno.  Cole seems like a favorite, it would suck for him to go.  But Dom too.
I bet something will happen to Anya.  Maybe not until Gears III but it will.  Then maybe we'll find out what happened between her and Marcus.  (Watch Dom and his face when we first meet her)

Maybe whoever bites the dust will have an sick death.  Like being trapped in a room with 7 beserkers, and you have to try to make them all run into eachother and kill one another....somehow.

    •  maybe he went to coed prison, but (none / 0)

when I saw Dom's face when they were getting off the chopper I assumed it was based more on Marcus not having seen a woman since before his conviction. Even before that though I think his record would point out that any women he did see would either be dead, a gear (what would a she-gear look like?), or a refugee. To see Anya, a well fed, attractive woman would I think be a bit of a culture shock. Maybe they did have a relationship at one point; but I don't think she is ever really in the line of fire.

      •  Yeah (none / 0)

That's a good point I.  I overlooked that fact.  When you think about it Marcus has a really dry personality, alot like the Master Chief (in Halo: CE not 2) and we really don't know a whole lot about him.
I was thinking something along the lines of a past relationship in whatever Sera High School, College.....whatever Pre-COG basically.

Only way to know for sure is to wait for the sequals and or prequals.

        •  Guys, come one. Co-ed prison? (none / 0)

In your dreams.  As for the looks Marcus and Dom were giving to Anya, I have a little different theory.  Based on her youthful good looks, and the fact that Marcus has been in prison for 14 years after several years of fighting, I would say she is much much younger than Marcus.  This leads me to imagine that Anya was either a young child during E-Day, or a very young student.

In the case of a child, I like to think that Marcus recognized her as someone he may have rescued during the events of E-Day.  As ya'll may recall in the promo-vids, there was a desperate scramble to Jacinto Plateau.  Afterwards, any stragglers were deemed stranded.

Or, Anya and Marcus go way back to a connection with his father.  Maybe she was a university student under the tutelage of Marcus's father.  She may have been there with Marcus's father on that fateful day when Marcus dashed his career to save his father.  She may have been there at the end, or maybe she was witness to what happened to Marcus's dad and Marcus wants to know, but has to wait till he can get her alone.  Alone to talk fellas.

Or, she could just be a great looking girl that Marcus wants to get with....

I'm going with this one...."She may have been there at the end, or maybe she was witness to what happened to Marcus's dad and Marcus wants to know......"
That is well thought out.  And Dom's face could show how close he and Marcus are, because it would mean Marcus told him.

are to see a second Gears of War going back to Emergence Day.  If that happens, we're going to meet alot of new characters and chances are most of them are not going to make it to the end.

If the story continues after our first 36 hours with the boys, then I don't want to see them broken up so quicly.  Personnaly, I can't get enough of Cole's dialog.  The dude is just fun.  As for Baird, everyone loves the synych.

      •  No (none / 0)

Going to Emergence Day goes to the act that leads to Marcus's imprisonment eventual imprisonment.  It was after Emergence Day that Marcus disobeyed orders to attempt the rescue of his father.

As we have seen, Marcus is a bad ass soldier, had a history of excellent service, and a natural leader.  With all these qualities in mind, it must have been a horrific situation or a very deliberate and concious act that drove Marcus to make the decisions he made.

As I sit here and watch "24", I get stoked thinking about Marcus and the next Gears.  Just like my favorite show, we (as Marcus) are thrust into a high intensity frame of time where decisions are made and actions taken on the edge of life and death.  I only see the tale of Marcus and his companions getting better.

Gears like Halo is going to have a genesis in game features and story development.  I expect a lot of new characters, and possibly multiple storylines, which really good stories have.

I don't mean any offense, but 24 is complete garbage.  I just can't take that show seriously, and it's just not that much fun to watch.  The story just makes me laugh.

  •  It's gotta be his dad (none / 0)

Now we all know Marcus's dad was up to something at his house, and that the locusts were onto it, so maybe he isnt dead but held hostage!! Now I see Marcus going awol again to save his father, followed by his faithfull squad, which will give plenty of chances for Baird to moan his head off! then as Marcus saves his Dad, something happens spawning the classic dying father in his arms scene, where the hero finally shows some sort of emotion, followed up by some parting advice or info, such as why the Locusts will fight until the bitter end, then Marcus must get this info back, again prepping for another classic movie type scene, where Colonel Hoffman dresses him down, very dirty Harry. Then giving another "final warning" Marcus then goes on to save the world, probably having some sex at some point for gratuitos reasons.

  •  I think Hoffman (none / 0)

will play a more pivotal role in Gears II. I am still intrigued about why Marcus refers to Hoffman's plan w/ the resonator, as if the Colonel has a hidden agenda. My thoughts: there was more to Marcus abandoning his post to save his father than we think. Perhaps old Mr. Fenix was a threat to Hoffman's power; as we find out, he had all the data to the Locust tunnels in his lab. Perhaps Marcus knew what his father was doing and went home to try to retrieve that data and end the war early, but when his father died first (and Marcus wouldn't have had Jack w/ him, obvioiusly) he was unable to finish that task. Hoffman could be like any man in power: he wants more power, and Marcus' father was getting in the way. If Marcus had succeeded, saved his father, and retrieved the data, Hoffman wouldn't have been the hero, denying him a chance for a high level post-war political position. I think it's clear in how Hoffman "addresses the nation" in the final cinematic that he is not just a colonel, but the actual leader of Humanity on Sera (or at least that's how he thinks of himself). Even in multiplayer, we get hints that Hoffman is the opposite of the Locust queen, as opposed to being the opposite of RAAM or another high ranking Locust officer. He is much more than a soldier, and therefore his motives are much deeper than tactical victory. Perhaps for him it was worth it to delay victory for 14 years in order to ensure he achieved a position of power in the Seran government.

At any rate, that would sure bring a darker side into the Gears of War story.
