Tue Oct 02, 2007 at 03:27:08 PM EST

here is what teamxbox has got to say about it

"By now, you must have heard the rumor of Bungie leaving Microsoft that started at 8Bit Joystick.com. Well, we can't provide further info now (we'd put our sources in trouble) but we're going to tell you that it is more complex than simply Bungie leaving Microsoft or Microsoft letting Bungie go.

There will be an official announcement this week, definitely before October 12th"...

  •  Yes (none / 0)

I read this the other day and just have to say If MS lets Bungie get away that would be the stupidest thing MS ever did, they say that a few guys from Bungie may be leaving but we will have to wait and see.  I just can't see this as being true, but you never know with this business.
  •  MS (none / 0)

will still keep the halo rights though
  •  just wondering.... (none / 0)

but besides Halo, what other IP's have come out of Bungie that people love? Oni? =P

To pose another question but is Bungie a great studio that can produce hit after hit or just a one-hit wonder?

    •  The Myth games were huge... (none / 0)

too.  Oni and Marathon are both Bungie games.  Bungie seems to be like Blizzard, hit after hit.  Albiet they did Marathon for the Mac, the Myth games were on PCs as was Oni.  And now Halo for the Xbox, so they have covered a lot of platforms.

The most like possibility is that the core Bungie guys will leave and form their own company, but didn't that happen after Halo 2, I forget the name of the game, but it had a map editor included (in a Xbox game) and was Sci-Fi based that I think was done by a bunch of ex-Bungie guys or is that that Zombie game, damn I am getting old, can't remember now.

about myth that game was good
      •  yeah the zombie game (none / 0)

Yeah they did the Zombie game, Stubbs the Zombie. Alex Seropian, the founder of Bungie, veered off to make the software company Wideload games after Halo was produced. So far they have Stubbs done and they're working on a XBLA game called Hail to the Chimp. Check out their website: http://www.wideload.com.
        •  Thanks for the assist.. (none / 0)

getting old sucks.  Any way I didn't play Stubb's the Zombie, but it was supposed to be pretty good.

I wonder if he regrets leaving now??

      •  i think Blizzard is a bit of stretch... (none / 0)

they have multiple big hit IP's that people continue to play and clamour for (Diablo, Starcraft, Warcraft) and the mother of them all WoW.

It's a toss up of which has the greater IP (Halo or WoW) but I don't see anyone praying for the next Marathon game or another addition to the Myth series. So to say they are similar doesn't seem fit in my eyes.

        •  well... (none / 0)

WoW are Warcraft are really the same IP so I guess that kinda fits with the Halo Wars thing we have going on.

        •  Remember Pax Imperia 2 by Blizzard....??? (none / 0)

No, I do, but it never happened.  The trailer looked amazing, but alas it never came out by Blizzard.  Any way, Starcraft , Warcraft, and Diablo are the big three franchise by Blizzard.  I know huge, but in their own way Marathon, Mythic and Halo are on near equal terms as the Blizzard IPs, so I don't think it is that far of a stretch and I know several people that want an updated Mythic

  •  Someone was smoking crack (none / 0)

if they manage to let bungie slip away. I just dont think Haylow would be Halo without Bungie.
  •  This is utter garbage... (none / 0)

I read that info from Kotaku last night & I can't believe people are falling for much less; discussing crap like this as if it has any credence.  If MS were to sell Bungie Studios off, it would be for some heavy coinage.  Discussing garbage info like this only perpetuates this crap.  Bungie is owned by MS.  Period.  If the majority of the studio employees break off & form another company like Alex Seropian, they can.  However, Bungie & all of its IPs are ultimately owned by MS. I wouldn't be surprised if this "rumor" from a friend of a friend whose cousin works for the janitor who sweeps the floors at Bungie was actually started by Sony fanboys or MS haters.  We should kick this crap to the curb where it belongs!

I dont know about anyone else. But, Blank put my mind at ease.

      Thanks for decisive action Blank.

      Rumor...SQUASHED

    •  ha ha ha (none / 0)

Great response, Blank.  But I have to say, if there were zero truth to it, Microsoft would already have denied it.  As it is, they aren't denying it.  I think there is going to be some sort of change.

      Bungie Actually Leaving Microsoft?
      by Billy Berghammer
      POSTED: 10/2/2007  2:41 PM

Rumors are floating abound that Halo masterminds Bungie will be leaving Microsoft. The rumor's source being a reader blog from Seattlepi.com stating that in fact, as of yesterday, Bungie is no longer part of Microsoft. While the majority of Internet denizens are stating that this could never happen and that it's not true, we've heard the opposite. From a source close to Bungie, Game Informer has  learned this rumor has some merit. It looks like with Halo 3, Bungie really is finishing the fight.

Our source stated that Bungie is "tired of Making Halo, and didn't want to do future Halo games." For an unstated, but significant amount of money, Bungie shareholders bought the studio name back from Microsoft. Our source also revealed that even though Microsoft will retain the rights to Halo, Microsoft also has "the right of first refusal on future games." This means that Microsoft has the first shot at publishing Bungie's future titles. How this will come into play if Bungie decides they want future game X to appear on the PlayStation 3 and Wii alongside an Xbox 360 release will make things quite interesting.

We finished the fight. We're outta here.

We contacted Microsoft, and their boilerplate statement basically skirts the issue.

"There's been no such announcement. We continue to celebrate the tremendous success of the global phenomenon that is Halo 3."

After every Halo release, members of Bungie have departed to form their own development houses such as Certain Affinity and Wideload Studios. Why would Microsoft actually let go of the company who single-handedly made Xbox what it is today is the big question. And for that, Microsoft nor Bungie have revealed a true answer.

We'll have more on this story as it breaks.

  •  This is one of those situations where (none / 0)

its just crazy enough it might be true. While I HIGHLY doubt this would happen, Bungie and Microsoft's silence worries me.

But that's just not how you do business. If someone as big and important as Bungie is gets unhappy, you FIX THE ISSUE RIGHT AWAY. It doesn't matter what it takes, you just do what you have to do.

So while I really doubt this would happen I'm not disregarding it just yet.

    Also...this worries me as well:

    •  actually you know what... (none / 0)

this doesnt really worry me at all, everyone is so caught up in the post-Halo 3 launch I doubt it'll be anything to dent the steamroller that is Halo 3.

PS I can't wait for TF2, I actually think I'll play that game more than H3.

      •  Woo Hoo! (none / 0)

I'll be your medic (or engineer, or demoman, or Pyro).

Yeah, forget finishing the fight, we have a new one to start!  ;)

  •  Not true. (none / 0)

I can almost guarantee that this is not happenning. Knowing MS, they will milk Bungie for all of the games they can produce for as long as they are making consoles.

    •  Ha ha! No kidding. (none / 0)

That would be a coup for Sony, that is for sure!

Won't and wouldn't happen.  The most "Bungie" thing that Bungie could do were they to be given their freedom, would be to start making games for the Mac again.

In which case, I would say, go for it but you won't be getting any of my money.

What I would really like is for game developers to start embracing Linux (Ubuntu)!
