Halo 3 in CHURCHES everywhere!

Mon Oct 08, 2007 at 04:37:26 PM EST

Okay I heard about this on the radio and did a little digging. It is %100 legit. I cant say much that isnt in this article but I think it is sweet.

Here is the article

http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/printedition/2007/10/07/halo1007.html

But with Halo's biblical feel this is so ironic that it is almost not even funny. Halo is touching more than the millions of gamers who've bought it...its touching the faith of thousands more.

Some quotes...

"First the percussive sounds of sniper fire and the thrill of the kill. Then the gospel of peace."

"leaders at churches and youth centers across Protestant denominations, including evangelical churches that have cautioned against violent entertainment, from holding heavily attended "Halo" nights and stocking their centers with multiple game consoles so dozens of teenagers can flock around big-screen televisions and shoot it out."

"Church leaders who support "Halo" --- despite its "thou shalt kill" credo --- say it has become crucial to evangelistic efforts to reach their most elusive audience, boys and young men, on their home turf."

"Baptist denomination takes a more cautious approach. The organization recently sent e-mail messages to 50,000 young people about how to share their faith using "Halo 3." Among the tips: Use the game's themes as the basis for a discussion about good and evil."

Now, I'm not even religous but this is brilliant from a religon standpoint.

(as always) (that's what she said)

Being a Pastor's kid back in the "old" days a good chunk of parents in the church were skeptic of video games in general. But just the transformation in the last 5 years has been amazing. We went from parents not wanting they kids to play Halo to them supporting the event I put on that featured Gears of War. Christians are more and more coming out of the dark ages of "if it isn't in the Bible, it must be wrong!" and starting to realize that even if they don't understand a game, the overall mission is far more important.

      I didn't know you were a Pastor's kid!

My grandfather was a pastor.  I have pictures of him in the black Mennonite clothing and everything.  I named my eldest after him.

Crusade's and Medieval time-period where Roman Cath's killed for their Religion. Hey, if there's a return of the Crusade's, I wouldn't be happier to be Italian! More seriously though, anything involving Politics or Religion I just think of as a joke. Most ideas these people come up with are just absolutely humorous. Don't worry, I'm Catholic, so I am religious, but I don't buy into the whole 'church-goer' thing.

  •  First of all great thoughts by all. (none / 0)

Here is the thing: The cuppling of the dwindling reach of the religous community and the massive expanse of the Halo phenomenon is the driving factor here.

The fact is that Churches are becoming ever more ignored by today's youth. The Churches have tried many approaches to entice young people(specifically males 18-25) to become more involved in religous studies, events, ect.. Their efforts at such while motivationally driven have fell flat on nurmerous attempts in most cases.

The Churches in using the massively marketed tool in Halo(3 million+ copies sold to the demigraphic they are both targeting) are attempting to reach a group of young people on a level they are inclined to responed to.

Do I agree with what they are doing? Maybe, maybe not. But, can I argue that they AREN'T touching more of our youth than ever before? No I can not.

The Churches are trying to establish a common ground with the youth it has lost touch with. And, if it means using the largest, most successful entertainment product the planet has ever seen, it is a means to an end which previously had no hope of being reached.

If a fraction of the kids are reached in this effort it is still success from the Churches standpoint. You have to ask yourself: Is there a greater good here that counts as a victory? Or, is any compramise here a moral defeat?

  •  My experience (none / 0)

Difficult questions, but good to consider.

    I am not sure.

What I do know is that the neighbor kids (and their parents) come over to my house and hang out for a good number of reasons.

Food, my kids, my yard (soccer, football), Xbox, me, Food (didn't I mention that?).

This important thing that people need (I am finding out) is friendship.

The Bible has been read and ignored by most not necessarily what is in it, but because people don't trust those who are "experts" or "christians".

My home is becoming more and more open to people.  There is no gimmick.  It is because my heart is becoming open to people.

    And they come.

And my heart is changing.   And maybe their heart's are too.

    Life is good.

    Thanks Thumb for the forum.
