Gamertags

Sun Feb 25, 2007 at 10:29:01 PM EST

I'm always seeing people's XBL gamertags and wondering why people chose that particular gamertag.  I mean some of them are pretty self explanatory like ViolentbyDesign.

But some of you might be wondering why a Polish-Italian guy has the gamertag papi blez.  It's pretty simple, actually. I married a beautiful Mexican woman and my daughter calls me "Papi".  It's the title that I treasure above all else.  I figured it would be the best I could come up with.  I actually kind of dig my gamertag because it means something to me as opposed to a lot of the IK1lln00bs-style gamertags I see out there.

I'm curious as to origins of your gamertag.  What drew you to the moniker and XBL identity you now possess?

    Zoso fan came from my fanboyism toward Jimmy Page from led-zeppelin. His "symbol" is commonly referred  to as zoso because thats what it appears to spell.

  •  Sparton 501, eh? (none / 0)

    The 501 in my title comes from the 501st legion, the star wars clone trooper unit (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/501st) known as 'Vader's Fist'. Any players of Star Wars Battlefront 2 will tell you that the blue striped clones are the 501st legion, the main characters in some of the campaign.

    Sparton is a bit of a longer story. When I joined xbox live there where a lot of spartans due to the Halo franchise; it was a common moniker. Well, SpartOn, well, thats unique. Everybody wants to play with Sparton. Everybody, I mean Everybody, thinks that Sparton is cool. Even if you don't. Also, I think the title Spartan deserves a certain respect, like Doctor. And besides, so much Spartan hoopla has been generated in our videogame world that it has become synonomous with super soldier, tough guy, saviour of the world.

    It's almost like samurai v. knight. So much Japanese culture has been saturated into American society that we've begun to beleive in the samurai as a defender of the weak, damsel rescuing machine that we forget that they where a group of feudal lords keeping Asian society in the medeival period until the 1880s, while knights are barbaric mercenarys without particular skill or honor.
    Neither popular conception is true, and it's not true to beleive that the Spartans were heroic warriors attempting to save the world. Nor, were they barbarians staining the penninsula of Greece, savages with nothing but a soldier state.

    So, I suppose my tag shows my fanboy status of star wars, and also my desire to be a mediator (an. . .arbiter, if you will [haha]) of society, unbound by conventional wisdom.

    Also, Spartan 501 was taken.

  •  Simple really..... (none / 0)

    I did rock climbing without any gear for a few years, hence the term Freeclimb. I just replaced the ee's for 33's because of the whole use of the term "l33t"....from that we get Fr33climb. Simple.

    I was trying to come up with names for a while but I never could get one that I created, so I made mine RoBBins0096 because Robbins is my last name. Simple and to the point :)

      MDK!!! Frick, man, that game was BAD ASS! I remembered it shipped w/ the original iMacs, and then they made that sequel on DreamCast.

      Frick, man, MDK was one of the most creative games I'd seen in that time. Damn, so that's where you get your name? I never even thought of that. That's freaking awesome.

  •  Have you seen the movie? (none / 0)

    Blankman was a hilarious movie starring Damon Wayans & David Alan Grier.  It came out back in the hey day of In Living Color.  I cracked up at Wayans' character & hence; I chose the name since it was kind of unique.

  •  Fergy33WF... (none / 0)

    My gamertag has been makin me mad for the past couple months because everyone enjoys singing that stupid "fergie" song EVERY time I join a lobby...lol

    Well, the truth is I really can't stand "fergie" *notice the 'ie' part is not the same as 'y', big difference there. Not even kidding. Of course we  share Ferguson as a last name and thats where we get the nickname. (think her's has an extra 's')...lol

    Fergy=Nickname
    33=basketball and baseball #
    WF=West Fargo - my high school/city

    And thats my story! haha... I've thought hard about switching gamertags, but well, as far as I'm concerned Fergy33WF always = me!

  •  ESuns (none / 0)

    Well, I have 3 sons, and aside from meeting and winning my beautiful wife, it is the accomplishment, could it be called that, that I am most proud of.  I added a little sci fi flavor to it by changing the "o" to "u" and calling myself 3Suns.

    However, on XBL, we are not allowed to start GT with a numeral.  Since "Three Suns" just didn't cut it for me, I decided to go reverse l33t and use a letter instead - ESuns.  I am quite pleased with it and I really like it when people actually call me 3Suns as opposed to ESuns online.  Happens every once and a while.

  •  Mad Bungee (none / 0)

    is the nick of a very calm and cool killer from the anime Gungrave. It matches to my personality (not the killer!!) so I picked it. When I choose a name I want it to tell a little story and matching to myself. And honestly: doesn't it sound very cool? ;))

  •  Awesome topic (none / 0)

    I've really enjoyed reading everyone's story here, great idea Papi.

    As for myself, it's relatively simple: just a creative twist on Airborne Ranger. My dad was in the 101st Airborne in Vietnam, and while he kinda despises the Army after his experiences, he still has many fond memories and some pride of being in the Airborne. I'm a sci/fi fan, so I just put a futuristic twist on it by renaming it Starborne. For the past few years, I've been writing a novel-length sci/fi story that revolves around a Starborne Ranger, and I kinda just fell in love with the term.

    Gearheads was the first site I joined under this name. Previously, back in my Halo fandom days, I always went as Omniscient or Omni. And that was simply because I liked the word. :)

  •  Master Pre (none / 0)

    It's carry over from a High School nickname.  Master P was pretty big during my sophomore and junior years of Highschool, so my friends and I came up with our gangsta names.  Mine just happened to be Master P combined with a portion of my last name leading to Master Pre.

    The irony is that I was just a small town kid from South Dakota, so I'm hardly a "gansta"!  I suppose I'm actually more of a "wanksta"! hahah

    The original meaning of my name really isn't there anymore, I can barely stand Master P anymore, but the name just stuck and will continue to stick!

  •  Joeyscorpse (none / 0)

    I am allways asked why Joeyscorpse? First of all Im a huge fan of  Death Metal and zombie movies, When I started playing UT I made a guy for my son named Psycorpse and while I was Tattooing I was called calico Joe, Fryer Joe and then Joey due to the fact all the babes wanted to use my wifes pet name for me. So needing a Gamertag I choose Joeyscorpse I am Joey -I am a scorpio (scorpse) And just like the zombie flicks my undead corpse (me) is playing the game. (lol) Trust Me I have thought about a change but well see.
    And I post here as Captain Crunch cause when I was working for the big 3 - Some girls talked about diver down and my fuzzy multi-colored beard and captain munch slowly turned into captain crunch. I was not aware that gears crunch was on the train in the last level.
  •  Good question (none / 0)

    I know I haven't played with you guys yet, just hasn't worked out, but one night I will.

    As for Major Dan, it is simple, my first name is Dan and I am a Major in the AF.  It also comes a bit from Lt. Dan from Forest Gump and Major Tom from the David Bowe song.  Also, I had a hard time making Major so it meant a lot as it had just happened when I signed up for XBL.  So looking back maybe it isn't so simple.

    Thanks.

    to see how some of you guys got your 'tags.

    Mine is easy. I have an odd (but not creepy) fascination with the Grim Reaper. Everywhere he is there's mass chaos and destruction, and plus he has a cool name. The way I thought of spelling it 'Grymm Reepur' though is a pretty funny story. I was playing FN3 when I was using an old tag and I created a fighter. I made him as a power-house and I was thinking of a name I could give him. After awhile I thought of Grim Reaper since, but I wanted to make it original, alas Grymm Reepur. As for the 999, just a random number that seemed to fit.

  •  well, mines nothing special... (none / 0)

    I used to be a fan of Saturday morning cartoons, and I saw this one little leprechaun try to fight bugs bunny for his gold back (or something like that, there was a leprechaun ok?) and he tried to box him to get it back.

    I thought it was hilarious, and I came to the conclusion that it was quite an original name.

    Besides, can you really refuse the amazing synergy, that could rip apart the fabric of the universe, that evolves from Boxin and Leprechaun stuck together? I don't think so.

    its really not that cool, sorry guys.

  •  Rivithed (none / 0)

    My tag comes from the term used for club kids that are into industrial/ebm music: Rivit Head (there are different spellings of it). I spent many nights in that scene and love that kind of music. Gears of War is definitely the ideal kinda game for a Rivit Head. I wish I could change my tag to "Gearhead"!

  •  HHR ROGUE 7 (none / 0)

    This evolved from ROGUEWARRIOR7.  When I first started LANing with H1 I picked ROGUEWARIOR (max #of letters hence the missing R) after Richard Marcinko (an ex-Navy Seal who led the Red Cell division of Navy Seals responsible for a lot of counter cold war bs in the 70's and 80's) who wrote a book called Rogue Warrior.  So that stuck until XBL when I could finally fit ROGUEWARRIOR in.  Of course someone had already taken that so I added my favorite number; 7.  The HHR part of my name stands for my Halo 2 clan; HeadHunt3rs Reloaded.  Anyway, I took the clan "brand" and lopped off the warrior and kept the 7.

      I think it was like 8th grade...long time ago.  And we had a coach from Denmark or something.  So he couldn't really pronouce my first name Marcus very well.  It sounded alot like Maca.  I have no fucking idea where the face part came from my buds just started adding it.  I never see it anywhere so that's good.  Plus "maca" is actually a plant from mexico used for sexual drive or some shit.  Yeah had to distance myself from that.

    One of the best posts yet Papi.  I think now is a good time for you to bring out this because many of us are starting to get to know each other.   As for me, I am a 36 year old Polish father of three.  However, I don't feel old.  Kenai 91 comes from the summer of 1991 (just turned 21).  Spent the summer in Alaska with two college buddies working in the Salmon factory in the Kenia peninsula.  Spent the rest of the summer traveling and having some of the best times ever.  After college, named my black lab - Kenai.   I always heard it pronounced (Keen eye), but Ken eye works too.  Tried to get the gamer tag to be just Kenai, but believe or not, someone else already had it.  You gotta love how big XBL has gotten.
