New Maps Thursday!

Tue May 01, 2007 at 10:31:41 AM EST

EDITOR'S NOTE: Looks like we're in store for a new and interesting FFF with four new maps to play on. I talked to my bro about this yesterday and he really digs the new maps. I'm stoked about getting them and more stoked about playing them with you. This will re-invigorate Gears for a while. Wow, new maps AND playing on my Elite during FFF. Couldn't get any better than that. - papi blez

Just heard that four new gears maps are being released this Thursday at 4am est.  They will run 800 MS points, and will be free to download in four months, on September 3rd.

The "Hidden Fronts" map pack is made up of Subway, Bullet Marsh, Garden, and Process.

"Bullet Marsh: In this Kryll-infested swamp, an old generator still powers the area lights. A few stray bullets could easily knock out the generator, leaving combatants to fend for themselves against the Kryll.

Garden: This overgrown and crumbling conservatory still has a working fertilization and pesticide system. This system can pose a serious hazard to anyone who ventures into the greenhouse without first venting the air.

Process: Teams must fight for control of this subterranean Imulsion processing plant, still active despite the cessation of the Pendulum wars.

Subway: Timgad's Central Subway station used to serve as a central hub for commuters. Now the tunnels are crawling with Locust."

What does everyone think?  Is that a little steep for four new maps, or are you going to wait until September to get them for free?

Woot!  Actually, from what I've heard about your FFF playing, this may be the only time that I get to beat you at anything, MDK.

Speaking of FFF, thanks for attempting to get me involved last Friday, papi blez.  I was at a friend's casa playing Halo 2 and drinking copious amounts of rum, and could not join.

I promise that I will be joining you guys one Friday in the next month!

  •  Yeah (none / 0)

I don't see the big deal with the maps being $10.  I'll never have qualms about paying money for anything Gears-related just because I know I'll use it a lot.  My only hope is that there isn't a Raven Down-type map on this one.  You know, the map is so small that it turns into a no cover shotty fest every time.
    •  Points Points Points Points (none / 0)

Ugggh!  So, in the grand scheme of things, can you figure out how the points are shared between the game developer (EPIC) and the bank (M$).  Is the transaction going to the game developer to further support good games, or is it a ploy by M$ to wring more profit out of thin air.  As I recall, it was EPIC (in various public publications) that said they were prepared to give the download content out in support of their game, but it is M$ that continues to push micro transactions.  Once the game is out M$ add no more value to the Gears experience, nor do they incur additional costs.  Its magic money for them.

I think that as consumers we should be a little more vigilant and not let M$ roll us into a mode of accepting micro transaction after micro transaction.  It has already become a game where 100 points does not equal $1.  Pretty soon, we could expect to see microsoft points increase in actual monetary expense or downloads increase in point values.  Where or when does it roll in our favor (the consumer) and we begin to experience a decrease in costs per transaction for the consumers?  Especially, if the number of consumers increase with each new console bought.  If that is the case, then I think that consumers need to become more vocal in our unacceptance in micro charges.

There is a little thing that is said by Morgan Webb on G4TV, "If games become a venue for advertising then we (consumers) should get our games at a lower cost or free."  Now, I'm paraphrasing it a bit, but with this in mind, I would rather see downloadable content on the xboxlive marketplace be a sponsored asset rather than another spoonful of M$ micro transactions. Sponsorship can be in the form of inserts in games, tournaments, contests, and something we havent' seen yet.

I'm just a little worn out by micro transactions.  I bought the console, I buy the peripherals, I purchase the gold access, I buy the games, and now I just want to enjoy the games.  The encouragement of game developers to add content is not to make a better profit margin on add-ons, it should really be considered as enticement to new gamers to buy the game.  I think that if you read back into some of what EPIC was preaching earlier, they would agree.

M$ has an opportunity to burn-out its base with micro-transactions, cause if Sony gets a stock of games, gets people online for free, and we all get to see game developers give free content cause Sony isnt pushing the milk money jug, then you may hear a whole new hue and haw from the masses of 360 owners.  Heck, some of you should be a bit miffed about purchasing another upgraded console from the original.  If you aren't yet, then maybe you will when the Elite gets another upgrade 4 to 6 months from now.

I just think M$ is pushing the envelope of consumer satisfaction.

      •  you make some (none / 0)

good points and I would love for them to be free. But were would MS make any of their money. They lose money on each one of their consoles being sold.Plus as a consumer you can regulate what you buy. To be honest this is going to be my first time buying a micro transaction so really MS hasnt stole too much of my money. I do not think your being forced into buying them. I can buy them now for 10 dollars or I can wait for four months and get them for free. And Sony is free because I do not think the support is their like it is for the 360.If it was I am sure that Sony would be charging you for them.
      •  Don't think for a second that Sony (none / 0)

isn't going to be charging people up the ying yang for content.  Just because they make their online service free don't think that means they aren't going to look for every opportunity to get money out of their consumers.  They need some way to make sure that the service remains free and that means making money somewhere.
  •  I'm getting them first thing.... (none / 0)

I'm on for playing these in FFF.  I will get them right away.

One question do we want to just cycle these 4 maps for the first FFF that we have?  Seems short but maybe add one or two others?  Thoughts?

Other nice point is that this will give some of us (me) a better advantage as some of you will not be a familiar with the maps.... ha ha... look out for the chainsaw!

the same FFF but with only the 4 new maps unless there is enough of us that will not have the maps (I will have the maps) that we require a room with only the old maps, but since were all gearheads im assuming that everyone will have them.

Tyler put up a new poll to see who is buying the maps.

  •  By the way (none / 0)

I always think of this stuff in terms of movie ticket prices.  Sure a game might be $60, but if it's a quality game you get endless hours of entertainment out of it.  A movie is what, two hours and you usually have to pay close to $10 for it.  If we're talking value for the dollar, gaming is head and shoulders above other forms of entertainment.

Even TV kind of sucks this year...24 has been a disappointment, Lost is going in circles again.  The shows I look most forward to these days are 30 Rock (all due respect to The Office, it's the funniest show on TV hands down), House (although it's starting to get repetitive) and Heroes (the best hour on television right now).

    •  Me, too. (movie ticket prices) (none / 0)

I would have loved it if they were free, but these are not community generated maps like they have for computer games.  Epic made these maps.  Best of all, if 800 points doesn't fit your budget, you can get them for free in 4 months.  I think that is a brilliant marketing strategy.  You know, knowing that M$ and Epic are willing to give them away, makes paying for them painless.  The irony.

All that is gold does not glitter.

how can you dis Jack Bauer like. I just cant believe that you 24 has been a dissappointment. Well you know what you have been a dissappointment to me because you havent been able to play the xSilentStrykex Wait until friday night and send him a request to play and i shall have my revenge for you dissing the ultimate Jack bauer. And you had a request for us to send you messages and i did and you never sent me one back. that is really disappointing to me papi. (Just Joking Man)

Seriously though i cant wait to play FFF, and i will get on as soon as i can, and hopefully you can get on earlier because 4 am is just to late (or is it to early) for me.

  •  Probably true... (none / 0)

I'm strongly tempted to not purchase these maps as a protest against MS not releasing it for free (as I was led to believe that Epic wanted to).

Realistically, Gears is a game that I enjoy the hell out of, and $10 isn't going to kill me.  I'm kind of afraid that is exactly the mentality that MS is counting on.  People will be annoyed, but not enough to not purchase the maps, plus they are making them free in four months.

I love follow-up support by developers, but I'm hoping for generousity and greed to be balanced going forward.  And hell, it's not like I didn't already get 2 extra maps for free.

  •  Wow (none / 0)

these maps seem to somehow look even more graphically impressive than the old ones. I am REALLY looking forward to someone getting eaten by the kryll when I turn off the generater. I wonder what the icon will be for that... Also, it seems like EPIC is trying to make their new maps more unique from each other. They are starting to add alot of personality and individuality to the maps. For FFF, I would definitely want to keep the cycle under 8 maps. Maybe these 4, Canals, and another one?
  •  Looks awesome (none / 0)

i will definitely buy the new maps first thing
  •  yeaaaaaa! (none / 0)

I love cool news like this coming suddenly! Just another normal week and then BAM! New maps. I'm lovin it...

    I mean...I guess I'll be buyin the maps...haha

  •  I'm not saying it should be free (none / 0)

Just that 800 points for 4 maps is a bit too much.
  •  Not bad. (none / 0)

800 points = £6.80 for me so i WILL buy them and I WILL be on FFF. I have not played Gears online in a while so it will be brill to get back into it.

    Brumak porn... love it!

  •  I think that the map cycle for FFF (none / 0)

should be the new 4, canals, and either gridlock or fuel depot.

I have no problem spending $10 on 4 new maps, MS could get away with charging a lot more for these, and i know that I will get plenty of playing time out of them.

  •  God damn it...... (none / 0)

I was just about to pick up FF 12 again... If it wasn't for the fact that gears and ff12 they have opposite horizontal camera controls I would have finished it long ago. Has anyone got around to slapping cliffy in the face for me? I'd say slap Yasumi Matsuno but I'm afraid he'd have another nervous break down and just stop making games.
  •  papi... (none / 0)

you say you dont want a raven down map, look at garden.  it looks to me like there is four sides and it looks small...raven down all the way.  but anyway yeah that maps look cool.  i dont care about paying points either.  ill play the maps for a while until the halo 3 beta at least so i know im getting what i pay for.

I've been thinking about how cool it would be to have effects like the Kryll ever since Fuel Depot.
I would see all the Kryll flying around and be like "dude that would be so awesome to be able to shoot out thet lights in certain places and I guess now we'll have that.
I'm really excited about the maps it will be fun to have new places to play.
Now if I just had some MS points!

I'm not buying those maps, I'm the kind of person that will only get expansion for games if they are free. I know they gotta pay the bills somehow. but I already gave them 60 bucks, Jesus they sold over 3 million copies and they wanna charge us $10 for 4 maps? GET REAL (although I do know epic wanted them free, microsoft just blows)
