360 warranty extended to 3 years

Thu Jul 05, 2007 at 05:38:52 PM EST

In case you missed todays big news:

Microsoft announced today they are extending all Xbox 360 warranties to three years, a policy that not only applies to new consoles but retroactively, as well. If you've had to pay for Microsoft to repair the red ring issue in the past, they will pay you back. At 2:30 p.m. PST, Microsoft will hold a teleconference to announce this.

I think its a good move my MS but honestly the 33% or more failure rate is simply unacceptable. These guys should get their act together and fix the thing in the first place.

  •  Ha, you beat me to the punch... (none / 0)

I was just about to post on this topic and I have to say that I love it. I had one 360 fail on me and honestly, knowing that it can fail had been worrying me and made me play cautiously and cut down on long sessions that might heat it up. Now I don't care, if it fails, oh well, but I have a refurbished one that might have an extra heatsink in there so I'm keeping my fingers crossed, and I'll get a new one courtesy of MS if so.

They will extend the "extended warranties", like i bought the 2 year one from MSFT directly.  So does that mean i get 5 years?

Would be nice... since i'm on my 4th already.

  •  Great News (none / 0)

Listening to a new Major Nelson podcast right now with an interview with Peter Moore. Very good news. Very well handled (albeit late)

Sony would have denied this until the day they died...

  •  That is fantastic news. (none / 0)

My 360 is just turning 1 year-old this September, and I was expecting that it would probably crap out just in time for HL2 (TF2) and after playing through only half of H3.

Now, they need to follow that up by allowing the Marketplace content to be playable (without signing in) on different consoles.  I want my boys to be able to continue playing those XBLA games that I paid good money for, long after my original 360 kicks the bucket (without signing ME in).

  •  when was the 30% thing official (none / 0)

i mean, the only thing i read was like one EBgames manager in Australia said that they got 30% back. That does not mean the unit has a 30% failure rate what-so-ever.

    goodnews though!

    •  Microsoft has made no such admission (none / 0)

however, just judging from the number of people around here and on other forums who have had to replace their 360s, the percent is definitely over 10, and I wouldn't be surprised if it is more like 50%.  The only reason the numbers might not be that high, would be because the people who haven't had problems (or won't have problems) probably do not use their machine for more than one or two hours at a time.  The problem itself has been confirmed as being a heat issue.  I get the feeling that those who are going through multiple machines are very heavy users.  Conversely, the reason that I haven't had to replace mine yet, is because it usually never gets played for more than a couple of hours at a time.

      •  Funny (none / 0)

I've technically owned three of them and only had one have problems.  The first one I bought wound up freezing because of a bad disc error.

So, maybe that means 33 percent?  Heh.

I'm actually just hoping that I don't experience any issues with my Elite.

      •  well (none / 0)

i know many many diehards who still have a working launch console. My launch 360 was left on for weeks sometimes (no joke) and only broke recently because i basically raped it with gravity.

    •  33% is the unofficial word on the street (none / 0)

Its not official from MS, but these guys did some research and came up with the number (Thanks Pre).

    •  wouldn't be suprised (none / 0)

if it was higher then that M$ made a faulty console anybody could say from the loud noise which the wii or ps3 doesn't make, if you pick a wii or ps3 up off the ground u will not get a ring around the CD so there are still a lot of problems with it even if it doesn't have a 30% failure rate
  •  dfas (none / 0)

Well according to the last poll here the number of failed consoles was like 43%.

30% probably not, but I'm sure the actual number is alot higher than the 5% failure rate they're claiming it is.

  •  It's good that MS is addressing the issue (none / 0)

Instead of taking the stance of denial, they are standing behind their product.  This is a big confirmation that they are out to make sure that their customer base is satisfied.  Yeah, it sucks to replace & wait for another unit when one craps out, but they are covering this free of charge.  Good job, MS.
