Xbox Live Server Platform

Hey everyone some interesting news about possible user mods making their way to the 360 I stumbled upon today.

Courtesy of http://www.xbox360fanboy.com:

"Update: 1UP incorrectly states that XLSP stands for Xbox Live Silver Platform. DXL540 informs us that it is in fact Xbox Live Server Platform, which makes a bit more sense. Furthermore, DXL540 sends us an SEC filing from Activision detailing what's possible with XLSP."

Also, here's the SEC filing
http://www.secinfo.com/d11MXs.u1EK7.t.htm
that was mentioned above. I only read the first paragraph of it. It's heavy on the legal jargon but it's very specific and I like that.

Either way, very exciting news I think.

What do you guys think?

P.S. By user mods I mean user made maps and gametypes and such. As well as possibly alternate levels and scenarios with scripts and such, and enhanced or alternate MP.

i was on the fence. I have done some modding in the past on PC, and would LOVE to being able to share that with 360 users. But from its current state, Microsoft does not embrace it enough by making their system very closed. They are essentially saying "I guess you can do this" instead of saying "we want to see this". Though the outcome may seem the same to some, it is not. Microsoft is notorious for offering systems to devs that don't hold much weight. (their standard ranking system flaws are what got GEARS a lot of negative feedback a while ago).

Microsoft could be doing SO much with XNA (like you mentioned in another post). They promote it, but when it comes to backing the community, it crumbles. I think by not being very open minded to the idea of modded content on 360, they are contradicting their purpose of XNA to extend knowledge of making content and the amount produced. Especially considering we pay for XBL. This SHOULDN'T be an issue. The same with dedicated servers.

So in the end, i think Microsoft promotes the idea, but doesn't back it.

capable of, I would like to see them use that architecture for serving up the games, even more than providing user-created mods.

All that is gold does not glitter.
