Medal of Honor: Airborne

Wow.  I just played the demo, and I was blown away.  First off, the graphics are stunning.  Not much else to say about that.  Second, the whole Airborne element adds soooo much to the game, I couldn't believe it.  The demo makes you take out 3 AA guns, and you choose in which order.  The playing field is relatively large, and it makes for a fairly non-linear experience.  Because you're parachuting in, you choose where to land.  Green smoke is where your teammates are going to land, as it marks a safe LZ.  Touch down there, and you've got teammates and time on your side.

But of course, you're not going to just take the most obvious route.  If you so desire, you can land right next to one of the AA guns.  You'll be in a hot spot, and you'll probably die (the game is pretty tough even at normal), but the option is there if you want to go balls-to-the-wall.  And then there's the sniper route.  You can choose to land on an otherwise inaccessible rooftop to pick off the enemies below.  Basically, you can choose where to go based on your style of play, which is also helped by your ability to choose your loadout before the mission.  In the demo, the options are fairly limited (the choice 1 primary gun in a selection of 3 and 1 secondary in a selection of 3 with a Colt .45 as your sidearm), but it gets the job done.

Then there's the arcadey elements.  While at times you feel really absorbed and into the war (the guns feel, sound, and look phenomenal), there are elements in the game that make it fresh and fun.  You can upgrade your weapons by getting enough kills with each one.  Kill enough enemies with your Thompson, it doesn't kick like a mule any more.  Kill enough with your M1 Garand, you're that much more accurate with it.  I haven't played another MoH game, so these could be something they put in every time, but I know that in this game they were pretty cool and fun.

The feel of the game is awesome.  The controls are different from most other games, and they definitely take some time to get used to, but in the end, they work.  Also, the lean ability is used in this game better than any other game I've played that allows you to lean.  It feels great.

So those are my impressions of the Medal of Honor: Airborne demo.  I know lots of you guys are sick of WWII shooters, but I personally can not get enough.  I say there are too few (I think the only WWII shooter I've actually played is CoD2 and 3, so that may be why I'm not sick of them yet).  I highly recommend that you download the demo.  Great graphics, fresh gameplay (even if it is WWII), and a realistic yet fun feel make this a pretty solid demo.  The full game comes out September 4th, and I know there's lots of shit going on around that time (Stranglehold and soon to be that record-breaking game), but I might have to try and make room for MoH:A.  Give it a try.

  •  I agree with the... (none / 0)

leaning feature is really cool, but other than that, it doesn't really appeal to me. I'm not saying its a bad game, but it doesn't shout BUY ME, with all the great stuff coming out. My wallet is already bleeding enough.
    •  Yea (none / 0)

I figure that'll be most people's reactions.  I highly doubt that this game will sell well, although I think it's a great game.  But yea, like you said, lots of other stuff coming, so it'll be hard to fit this one in.

      •  yea I can tell its a good game.. (none / 0)

unlike space giraffe, which is a flippin joke, you can tell there was some effort put into this, and it feels pretty solid, but it lacks something for me, I don't know what it is, but its lacking something that'll really grab and hold my attention. Ok you've got the parachute. But once you land, its just a solid WWII shooter, see what I'm getting at?
  •  good graphics (none / 0)

not a buy for me though
  •  i thought the game SUCKED (none / 0)

on PC. Though the graphics were nice. AA was pretty low though until i manually added it through my GPU control panel.

The gameplay was WEAK though (for PC at least). I literately had times where i was aimed directly at a guy and fired with no response of the enemy. The start anywhere thing is pretty sweet i guess.

I will check out the 360 version

have to check out the demo. Thanks for the writeup.
  •  yea its fun (none / 0)

but not a buy for me.  Definately a rental though.  I saw a vid of the online a while back for this game and it looked pretty sweet.  One team parachutes in and the other is on the ground.  Looked like it would be fun.

    Im "Geared Up" are you?

  •  Played the Demo and (none / 0)

shut it off after about 2 minutes. I played the Wii version and it was more fun than the 360 version. One reason I don't like it is because I have a personal hate for Medal of Honor, and it just doesn't really appeal to me now.

  •  I liked it! (none / 0)

It's a demo fellas and not a finished product, so somethings will be refined before release.  The one feature I really enjoyed was the use of cover and aiming.  It felt right, using the left trigger to aim and then to also lean out behind cover to take shots.  It was much better than the constant straffing in and out of cover.  It felt good to duck behind something and then with your left trigger to lean out and take a shot.  That is a good touch.

On the blah side, let's face it, WWII has been done too much and there isn't a lot more you can do with the weapons.  Right now there are so many good games on the horizon, I might not run out to get this one immediately.  Maybe I'll rent it to see how it plays and what is included on the multiplayer side.  It would be good to co-op with more than a couple friends and drop in as a platoon.

Ready to finish all the Fights!
