Friday Night FragFest: August 31, 2007

Thu Aug 30, 2007 at 02:12:54 PM EST

Yes, tomorrow is the last day in August which means that we will officially be in the month when Halo 3 is released.  I can barely contain myself waiting for it.

The sad thing is that I have this great game (BioShock)sitting in my disc tray right now and I can't seem to find time to play because work has been crazy lately.  I'm going to have to officially take a few vacation days when Halo is released or something.

Any way, thanks to those of you who offered to help get me into the COD4 beta.  I actually received my invite last night and downloaded it.  I'm not sure how much I'm going to be able to play and I'll probably get pwned by all you vets who've been playing a ton, but I do look forward to playing it a bit.  While you have a second, be sure to check out SweetTea's excellent COD4 impressions.  Great work, Sweet.

As for FFF, I'll be hosting a room at 8:30 as usual.  I'm looking for an East Coast volunteer.  Maybe you, GearsChrisB, as long as you're back to 100 percent healthy (and I hope you are by now!).  Sign up for FFF below.

Maybe we'll start out with Gears and do a little COD4 beta later?  It's up to you guys.  I bend to the will of the community.

Also, this is a big weekend for my wife.  mami blez is running her first half marathon on Monday and I'm damn proud of her.  She's been training very hard over these last few months, so do me a favor and wish her luck!  I would've joined but I've had two knee surgeries on my left knee and running isn't really something I do anymore (I do the low impact machines at the gym like the elliptical).  Not to get all sappy on your asses, but this January my wife and I will have been married 10 years and I couldn't have asked for a better partner or friend.  The Gearheads are rooting for you, mami blez!

  •  Oh I meant to ask (none / 0)

Can we get a private room together in COD4?  Where it's nothing but Gearheads?

Can we get a group of eight Gearheads together and go and do some matchmaking against other teams?

    •  Good luck mami blez! (none / 0)

I will definitely be at FFF, and I really think we should try and do as much CoD4 as we possibly can. As of now, we can have a room of 6 gearheads go and do matchmaking together, but I don't think we can have a full blown gearheads only room. Maybe if we have two rooms search at the same time we may get lucky? I honestly have to say that I think CoD4 trumps gears multiplayer in the sense of consistency and knowing whether you should have gotten the kill or died, but in overall goodness, I'd say they're about even :).
  •  I guess I can be Host, if need it (none / 0)

I'm on central time, and can be on from 10 to midnight hosting, just give me a few pointers in how to set up the matches.

    Never hosted before

Sorry, blankman I only have a digital watch!!!!!

  •  Host (none / 0)

I can host the East coast room, and yes Papi I am feeling better, not 100% but I'm good enough to play, still taking these big ass horse pills (antibiotic)  I think it would be great to play some COD4 beta, if it works that is.  Good luck to your wife I'm sure she will do great :)  And congrats on the 10 years that's great to hear, September 5th (wed.) is my 9 year anniversary.  And I'm probably gonna suck really bad at Gears, haven't play since before BioShock came out, playing that and COD4 beta lately.
  •  Wow, (none / 0)

half a marathon? Laul, I could barely jog 10 laps around my school gym; Good for her, she has my blessings. And for your 10 year Anniversary, good for you! My sister just got Married not even 24 hours ago to a long time friend and just being at a wedding can change your life - and with a baby on the way in about 8 months, it's going together splendidly! Grats on everything papi.

In regards to the FFF, I'll try and get be on, most likely I will, but I might just be too tired to do anything. With Tech at 6:00 in the morning, all the Marriage stuff, driving back and forth from Quaker State (that was for you Machete =P) all the way down to North Carolina (8 hour drive), all along with having to find time to spend with my Dad can all weigh you down at 15. But enough about me; I'll be a little rusty with with Gears trying to loot the Dead corpses and mash X to revive after I'm dead. I'm all for CoD4 afterwards, hopefully I can connect to the Host ;).

  •  Gooooooooooo (none / 0)

    Mami Blez!!!!

My dad has run 2 marathons now and never lets me forget it ;) You will do excellent, it is all in your mind.

As for tomorrow night I may or may not be able to be on...I'll definitely hop on for a few matches at least but I have ROTC Sat morning :(

Anyway, COD Beta would be awesome with all the GearHeads as long as it's working (which is getting rare). Either way I'll be there when I can!

    •  I won't be able to play past (none / 0)

1030 east coast, cross country in the morning. Cross country is long distance compared to track but not when you are looking at a half marathon. Although I did do a quarter marathon I guess you could say at practice yesterday.
  •  I'll be there (none / 0)

for the FFF. And we need to get as much CoD4 in as we can, like Machete said. It's incredibly addictive.
  •  I'm in. (none / 0)

Good luck, mami blez!  We're all proud of you.  You should have her wear a Gearheads t-shirt, papi!  That would be awesome!

Gears is MY Star Wars!!! Wooohhh!!!

    mami blez!

Here are just three pieces of advice from someone who has never even entertained thoughts of running for more than two miles:

    1.  Sprint for the first 400 meters and establish your lead early.

    2.  Drink at least 2 bottles of juice every time they are offered (who knows when the next time will be that you to drink for free?).

    3.  If you see the President, whip out your chocolate gun, and sprint over to give it to him.

    (just kidding)  ;)

Have fun and remember when you are running you only need to do it once, and then for the rest of your life you will have bragging rights.  On the other hand, if you find you are really enjoying it, you can make it an annual event.

    Cheers!

    •  believe me... (none / 0)

...I'm largely doing this for the bragging rights. I don't plan to make it a regular thang. :-)
      •  A good thing (none / 0)

is to try and run the whole time, no matter what pace! Also, try and eat complex carbohydrates the night before the race, something like pasta and bread. That way you'll have energy for a long time and not just burn up the simple carbs fast. Eat a healthy breakfast and try to get some potassium in you to help prevent cramps. Running FTW!
    •  When (none / 0)

I read the first piece of advice, my jaw dropped and I thought you were serious. haha

But no really, just set a good, strong pace, and you'll be fine. Good Luck though!

  •  I'm in... (none / 0)

I'm in probably late for east coast time, sorry GearsChrisB, sooner or later we need to jump on a match and take some people out with our saws.

I can be your east coast hosting backup the 21st of September as 2 kids are in college now and the 3rd is in school.  So i will be able to hog the tv.

I'm up for some COD4, only played a bit last night but would like to rank up.

Always up for Gears.  I stayed up to 4am playing Bioshock, is it me or the longer you play the game the harder the enemies seem to get and adapt?

Papi -- did you try the NHL 08 demo yet that is out????  I didn't see much difference from last year maybe a bit better shot control.

neighbor's dad always does the Iron Man competition, and he's qualified to go to Hawaii for the past 10 years or so.  His training is all year and nuts, though.  I haven't run one marathon, but I have a few friends that run an annual triathalon and they say it's pretty fun if not exhausting.  I respect marathon runners a great deal, so good luck, just finishing a marathon is something to be proud of.

I'm feeling California and looking Minnesota.

Dang, I decided to lay down and take a nap before I hosted and just work up.  I apologize for missing out on the FFF.  Guess I'm still not feeling too well.
