AO games?

Mon Aug 06, 2007 at 03:53:30 PM EST

I have been thinking about AO rated games (Adult Only) lately and wanted to ask the Gearheads about it.

  1. Would you buy an AO rated game?

  2. Having just found out lately, at least to me it was news, that neither the 360 or PS3 can play AO games, should they?  I assume the Wii doesn't play AO games, should it?

  3. Where would you expect to buy AO games?  Store, on-line or both?

I see a world with AO games but for some reason the industry has decided they shouldn't be allowed.  Now I am no prude, but I do see the need to keep adult games squarely in adult hands and not in kids.  For instance Grand Theft Auto with the Hot Coffee Mod could have been sold as a AO game and the one with out Hot Coffee could have been sold as the M rated version.  What would be wrong with that scenerio?

Gears of War is another example, the gore in it really makes a difference for gameplay, but add a little sex, some more language and could an AO version been created?  I would have bought it rated AO or M.  As it stands I play with the gore off to appease my wife because she thinks it is too much for my 11 year old.

As a whole though, I wouldn't mind a game that had sexual content in it as long as it made sense and was fun to play with, so to speak.  I see walking into a Gamestop and heading back to the AO section of the store, walking through some beads, or swinging doors and looking over the AO games.

This brings me to the point of the 360 not playing AO games, I guess MS can lock them out from playing, which kind of saddens mes :-(.  I know there aren't any real AO games out, but I had always hoped there might be someday.  Same goes for the PS3.  And honestly there are some games that are rated M that should probably be AO any way.

Am I totally off base here, or do I make some sense?  As I get older I wouldn't mind playing some more mature themed games, if some one could actually make a fun one.

Thanks.

Dan

Touching subject for the mainstream. Good thing this site isnt in the mainstream. But as far as would I, yes I would. As far as should they be on major consoles, yes they should. And as for where to buy them, online would be the obvious outlet.

I hate to make yet another comparison to the movie industry but it fits. Should we not let R-Rated, NC-17 or X-Rated movies to be sold in stores because they may fall into the wrong hands? Censorship is a line that the ESRB and other regulatory groups refuse to leave alone. Making games is an art, just as movies are and should be treated as such.

I better stop now before I get myself upset. It just pisses me off that the game industry is subject to far more scrutiny than many other industries. The freedom of expression is being violated more and more and it makes me sick.

Regulations can be put in place to keep these games out of the hands of children and parents can step up and be more responsible. End of story.

  •  why would you want (none / 0)

more SEX in gears? Maybe I don't think the COGS bonded THAT much. ;)

The only AO game i would buy would be one that didn't have creepy sexual content. If a game was AO, but got great reviews, i could see myself buying it.

i am not a big fan of animated sex

You could make an argument that the gore in Gears may push it into the AO category alone.  But lets say Marcus gets a love interest, Anna SP?, and the course of the game played out with a bedroom scene, much as many action moves have done. Buts Gears isn't my main drive here.

Manhunt 2 comes to mind also, why shouldn't there be an outlet to purchase that and play it?  As it stands now, you can't even play it, if it sells as an AO game.

    Thumb,

I agree if they pass any laws that restrict video games, I think they should make it across all medium especially books.  I have read books that I wouldn't want my 11 year old to read, books should have a rating system, such as movies and games and be sold to the approriate age groups.  But this thread is for games so I will stop now.

  •  To be honest (none / 0)

I didnt read the bottom part of the post until just now and I am slightly disturbed.

I still hold to my viewpoint on censorship, but the need for an entire sub-genre of AO games is pushing the issue a bit far. I can do without sex in video games. If you want porn watch jenna or nikki tyler. But as far as its place in games that will just fuel the fire for the critics and regulators that are already scrutinizing our industry.

    •  It is not a sub genre. (none / 0)

the rating is all ready there.  It is just not getting used.  Manhunt 2 is a prime example here is a game rated AO, presumebly because of the violence and gore.  So why not be able to play that?

I don't want sex games, but there could legitemately be a place for sex in games.

where you are coming from. I only labeled it as a sub-genre because it is not accepted by the mainstream audience. But, with the exception of Manhunt 2, you will not see any AO games widely marketed. Hence the reason I used the "sub-genre" labeling. But like I said, I understand what you are saying and I agree with almost all of it.

  •  As long (none / 0)

as they come out in 08 or 09, I'm fine with it. I'm not 18 yet :). Also, if the game gets an AO for sex, then it will probably be a shitty game to be honest. However, if it is for violence, I could see myself playing it, as long as it got good reviews and looked like a quality game.

  •  Personally (none / 0)

I wouldn't buy anything like that- I've chosen to live a certain life, and if a game had explicit porn of some sort I would stay away from it.

I choose not to get into that kind of stuff and never want to.

Personally I just think it would be sick and pointless to play a game with that stuff in it...There are so many better things to play for

  •  gta sa was the only game that i bought (none / 0)

    that had the ao rating

i never messed with hot coffee though.  didnt know how and didnt have a reason to find out.  it seemed stupid.
