Worst Online Experience Ever

Mon Sep 03, 2007 at 06:43:19 PM EST

Call of Duty 4 has provided me with the worst online experience I could have ever imagined.  Who in the fuck set this beta up?  They must be the absolute dumbest people on the planet.  I know some of it has to do with people getting it illegally, but would they not think that would happen?  It's a really obvious way around it, how could they not have prepared for that?  I started my beta up today at 11:30 in the morning.  I was fed up at 5:30.  In that SIX HOUR PERIOD, I played FIVE GAMES.  I don't remember what the time limit is on games, but it can't be more than 20 minutes (though they lasted usually about 10 minutes).  I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say that they all took 20 minutes to complete.  In SIX HOURS, I should be able to play 18 games, not 5.  I'll say the time between games takes a litte time off, so maybe around 15.  BUT NOT 5.  I would sit in lobbies for 30 minutes just to have 2 or 3 people join and then leave.  I tried joining games of people on my friend's list and recent player's list, but it worked only twice for people on my friend's list (Texas and Captain), and twice for people on my recent player's list.  I got the message "This server is full" or "The host is not responding" at least 50 times, and that's not an exaggeration.  I think  based on the fact that this was the worst experience I've ever had on Live or on the internet, I'm probably not going to buy Call of Duty 4.  If they put me through that much fucking waiting and waiting and waiting, they don't deserve my money (I know my $60 means nothing to them, but still).  Is it running buttery smooth for other people?  From lots of other people I came across it sounds like it's shitty for them, too.

  •  Yep I totally hear ya man (none / 0)

One minute I'll be in a match with friends and the next I'll be at the main menu shouting and crying extensively. Then, when I finally get into a match someone spawns behind me and kills me instantly every time.

In terms of ease of getting into matches- D
In terms of playing with friends-D
    Fun Meter: B

Fun meter after all the crap you have to go through just to play a game: C

Remember this IS a Beta and a lot of this will be fixed, so don't give up hope yet!

    •  i would have to agree with you sweet (none / 0)

i havent played the beta but i remeber in the halo3 beta it took me for ever to get into games my first day playing and then after that it was fine.  i would still buy the game if i was you
      •  Trust me (none / 0)

This is INFINITELY more frustrating than the Halo 3 beta.

That's a cool thing you did there, Sweet, those grades.  For me, it's

        Ease getting into matches: D-
        Playing with Friends: D-
Fun Meter of game itself: A-
Fun meter after all the fucking bullshit you have to go through just to play a game: D+

I know it's just a beta, but I hate that excuse.  If you're going to release a beta, at least make it so it works for Christ's sake.  I guess for some it does (carr's case is how it should be for everybody), but for too many it is terrible.

  •  Its called a Beta for a reason (none / 0)

I have never been a part of a beta that didn't have these kind of problems.

Most betas are like this. And considering they had LOTS more people on not only nationwide, but worldwide (which they didn't anticipate) you cannot blame them.

If anyone remembers, i couldn't play the Halo 3 beta with nearly half my friends list and games lagged out, put my on the other team and booted my constantly.

BETAS are BETAS. Read the disclaimer Infinite ward sent out to everyone. This is SUPPOSED TO BE HAPPENING so they can solve the issues by final product. Remember how laggy COD2 was when it launched? They patched it, but learned their lesson.

    •  So (none / 0)

really we're not supposed to be having fun, but actually be doing work for them?  The Halo 3 beta was enjoyable, even though I really don't like Halo that much, and it was a beta all the same.  You could set up rooms with just your friends, it did not take an unbearable amount of time to find games, etc.  IW can't fall back on "We didn't expect as many people to get in due to a glitch."  A beta should not be done this poorly.  IW fucked up big time.

And in regards to CoD2, they shouldn't have had to patch it, it should have been good from the get-go.  It wasn't a minor issue, either, it was just like the CoD4 beta, barely playable.  I love their games but IW needs to get their shit together and take some notes from other developers on how to correctly release an online game.  The fact that they can use patches after a game comes out shouldn't make them think they can just release their games unfinished.  The COD4 beta is extremely frustrating, but CoD2's shitty online release was inexcusable.  I can only hope they don't do the same with CoD4's release, but with IW's history, who knows.  Hopefully they do actually learn something from this beta and fix it all up before November.

  •  Infinite Ward should have made it a private beta (none / 0)

I hear people with similar complaints online a bunch. As a PC gamer, i am like, "well yeah". Its kinda of an obvious thing that a beta is supposed to have issues (especially in terms of connectivity online).

  •  I completely understand the whole Beta thing (none / 0)

which is why I said not to give up hope yet. However, the developer needs to understand that if you put a product out there that has a huge lacking problem, consumers won't just forget it. (Even if they should)
At the same time right now I am at somewhere around 10 minutes waiting for a match and counting...

With the Halo 3 Beta the longest I waited was 5 minutes and on top of that, at least I could load up one playlist with JUST my friends and screw around if I wanted to without any problems.

I know they'll fix the problems, they just have a long way to go

  •  I don't want to read (none / 0)

the "oh, this is a Beta" speech (not just you Zoso) because I remember when I first got into the Beta there were no problems AT ALL. And then when all this illegal activity started going on I can't play at all. I'm basically done, or have been because I can't even play the damned thing. And I'll be honest, I'm having more fun playing Two Worlds than this.

    •  well what is happening to you because of the (none / 0)

added number of online users is exactly what exposes its nature as beta. I can guarentee you as more waves of people started coming on, they were going to have similar problems. But it would have been more gradual and not extreme (like they planned). The issue would have happened either way, and you know they are solving it now.

  •  Apparantely if there are more than 100 people (none / 0)

    playing at a time COD 4 doesn't work :/

    Who knew?

  •  But seriously, as zoso said (none / 0)

this IS normal...the reason this Beta seems worse than the Halo beta is because Bungie was definitely prepared for it. They had obviously polished their online system and were farther along in this regard than Infinity Ward is. That doesn't mean the final product will suck, just that is does right now.

Eat an Apple before it's ready and you'll get the same taste

  •  i (none / 0)

can never play the beta again for now downloading settings keeps coming up.  Keft for about 2 hours forgot to turn it off and i still see downloading settings, and i always get randomly booted it is so annoying
  •  well (none / 0)

also, if you have a closed NAT, thats a huge problem, i have a router, with i plug my modem into, and my 360 into my router, and for some reason i get closed NAT when i test my connection, my router is netgear, and having a closed NAT, really makes a diffrence, you cant join most games, you have bad connections with other people, and you cant do a lot of things people with open NATS can do, so i just plus my XBOX 360 cable directly into my modem, and well when i have my 360 connected into my router, i had to wait literraly 30 minutes to join a match, and i thought it was IW's very bad service, and so i just connected my 360 directly into my modem, hope that helps, if this is not your problem, sorry

  •  hhhmmm (none / 0)

moderate setting can still be a problem, still less chance of joining a match with somebody who has an open NAT

  •  I think (none / 0)

they have actually begun banning people from the beta! I don't know if it's true or not, but rEDChief sent me a message asking whether I had been banned yet or if anyone I knew had yet, so I imagine he heard that people were beginning to get banned... Heads up Boxin, I'm sure they are discriminating against non-U.S.ers!
  •  False alarm! (none / 0)

Apparently, rEDChief was just curious if I had been banned for my good deeds ;).
