Speak now, or forever hold your peace.

The game has gone Gold, the wedding rings have been exchanged, the bride kissed, and with the money down on our pre-orders, the marriage has been all but consummated, so to speak. However, in a recent interview with Cliff, it was explicitly stated that randomness will continue to live in the new code.

It's pretty simple, two guys engage in a duel after both of them enabling their chainsaws and whoever presses the B button the fastest in the 2 second time frame has the highest chance of winning.  There's still a little bit of randomness in there which is okay to have, when you look at poker or blackjack there's the random shuffling of the deck.

http://www.gametrailers.com/player/u...

I provided the above quote in a thread in a different diary and got no response, none at all, and that baffles me.  Every single night we play, I hear complaints about this didn't register, or that should have happened.  Furthermore, on several occasions, I have asked people to submit questions that would probe into this "X-Factor" that Cliff mentioned a long time ago.  Nobody asks those questions, and even people who aren't in the position to ask, tell me, it is fixed, and that my question is irrelevant: that Gears 1 was just broke and that all has been fixed for Gears 2.

Yet, when I read that skirmishes are going to be determined a little like the "shuffling" of a deck of cards, I assume that that means there will be a line of randomizing code in there.  From there, I draw the conclusion, that the player with the most skills or the fastest button mashing abilities isn't always going to win for Gears 2, the same as it is in Gears 1.  That, indeed, shenanigans are going to continue to exist.

Isn't that what the above quote means?  Am I reading too much into what is said there?  I mean, "shuffling of the deck"?  That sounds pretty frickin' random to me.  I am reminded of the Coin that Zoso mentioned we should have been given with Gears 1.  On one side Locusts, on the other, COG.  At the beginning of every match, we should just toss the coin to see who wins.  I thought it was an absolutely HILARIOUS idea and that maybe Epic should come out with a Commemorative Coin on the second year anniversary of Gears 1.

Hey, from the beginning, being decidedly not a AAA player, I have always been on the side benefiting from that line of code, so you won't hear BOO from me, but it doesn't bother any of you?  Because it sure seems like it does when we play!  There are very few Gearheads that don't whine and moan almost the whole evening about how THEY should have gotten the kill.  Why is it then, that this statement by Cliff, doesn't seem to bother any of you?

  •  My apologies for the naked html there (none / 0)

In the preview, it showed as operational, so I went and added it to all the poll options for easier reading.  Turns out, it doesn't work, and now it is even more difficult to read.  Looks like I found another bug.

    context slightly.

I think the "x-factor" is something that is more built around the fact that casual gamers have moments where they can kill pros. One of the key elements Cliff has promoted for a long time.

The problem with gears was the hit detection, net coding and the general lag online. These factors brought the "x-factor" in extreme.

The way Cliff talked it really didn't concern me because they have a core system in place (like reviving) and the game's other issues should be fixed. Which are the reason for 99% percent of the shenanigans we complain about. :)

I don't know why this hasn't gotten more responses suns LOL

"There is much about the code in Gears 1 that is broken, including network and weapons/projectile-detection coding. In addition to this, there is a line or two of code that randomizes things to throw lousy gamers a bone"

I have faith that GOW2 will not disappoint in terms of consistency online.

  •  well (none / 0)

that doesn't make me too upset that there will be randomness, sometimes that is okay to have something unexpected to happen, but hopefully it isn't a constant problem.

  •  LOL (none / 0)

Yep, you hear plenty of complaining about this during a match.

  •  when i heard him say that (none / 0)

i chuckled and then it left my thoughts

like you said suns it may be the x factor that benefits players like me the most.

i can live with the existing problems because they dont bother me, its just a game that i love and i dont take my ability to play it seriously but i respect that people do care about these anomalies and the direct impact it has on their play

it may be that everyone missed it, but now that you have shown the light im sure opinions will vary

i feel that the x factor has always existed in video games and is something that can never fully be negated nor should it

think of it as a way to level the playing field

i always felt the toad got shafted

  •  We should test at just how "random" it is (none / 0)

When someone has the opportunity have both players engage in a chainsaw duel but dont hit any buttons. That way we can see who wins, or have one person pres the button once, and if they lose or whatever, we can keep going up and up to see just how much variance there is.

  •  I think (none / 0)

if they fix the net coding and hit detection as they said they were going to the majority of the shenanigans will be gone.  I will still be keeping my fingers crossed just in case tho.

  •  The issues we all complain about frequently (none / 0)

MUST be fixed. There is no excuse. Sure, there are some issues with online gaming that just exist and that's acceptable. All games have a certain degree of this.

But the level of brokenness found in Gears 1 was unacceptable, and I trust, simply because of the insanity of how bad it is that they wouldn't release a sequel with similar issues!

  •  Thank you for replying. (none / 0)

If you haven't yet, please do, or at least vote.  (I think there is enough text in the poll options, to give help you pick the representative choice.)

In the meantime, let me jump in here and respond to some of your posts.

Zos, your answer pleases me because you seem to be of the opinion that the randomness that Cliff intentionally has placed in the game, is more rolling a 20 on a 20 sided die, than getting heads on a coin (1:20 as opposed to 1:2). I think that bodes well, actually for people with my kind of lag.  At least if I am benefiting from my lag, I certainly do it unknowingly.  ha ha ha

    DEGREES, yep.  LOL

Boxin, great idea.  I think Zos and rED ran a bunch of "tests" that informed us about the Torque Bow.  I can't remember the specifics, but I remember being impressed.

SweetTea, the fact is, that even with all the whining and complaining about Gears 1, we still feel that Gears is actually less "unacceptable" (more acceptable) than all the other games out there...or we wouldn't keep playing it.  At the very least, we are willing to overlook its flaws for the joy it gives us.  To that extent, maybe we are a crazy community, all of us masochistic!  LMAO

But, that does beg another question.  If Gears 2 is still full of shenanigans, would the people here still play it as much as we will have played the first game, or are people going to say, "No, I gave you your chance.  No more."?

I am raising my hand here to say that even if it is so broken that it requires "House rules", I will still be more interested in playing Gears 2 than any other game.  "More, more!  Harder!  Twist harder!"

    •  Great Thoughts! (none / 0)

You posed the questions " If Gears 2 is still full of shenanigans, would the people here still play it as much as we will have played the first game, or are people going to say, "No, I gave you your chance.  No more."?"

I think we are almost forced to support Gears 2 because of all of our pledged fanboyism. Sure we'll express our initial disappointment but I think most of us will do more defending than criticizing. I think that statement is proven when the following hypothetical situation is thrown out there- If Gears 2 has as bad, or worse in terms of connection issues online the usual Fragfest game would still be Gears 2. At least for a long while.

Now let me be clear and announce that I don't think Gears 2 will be anywhere near as bad as the original. I honestly think Epic knows the issues they needed to deal with and wouldn't release another Gears the same way. So, I think Gears 2 will  have very little resemblance in terms of those connection issues online to the original.

  •  I treat this comment from Cliff as... (none / 0)

a way to excuse some of the shenanigans that will ultimately exist despite the reworked netcode.  When your game doesn't have a peer-to-peer setup or dedicated servers, it's always going to be prone to latentcy.  Cliff is essentially "warning" us that there will be situations when people are going to consider throwing their controllers down in frustration and yell out an expletive or two.  Oh, but remember when Cliff said that there would be some randomness in Gears 2?  You remember, right?  This is supposed to be Epic's "don't hold us completely accountable" card.  To go out on a limb and declare that a game will be 100% perfect is irresponsible and you'll only be setting yourselves up for outcry from your consumers.

Let's not fool ourselves, many of us have stuck with Gears 1 being the broke-ass game that it is because we simply love its rich universe and gameplay.  Shenanigans will still exist.  There's no doubt about it.  Let's not let the flaws of the game ruin our experience, but rather our love for it to bring us the enjoyment. laughter, camaraderie, and good times.  It's always easier to be negative than positive.  This community has always prided itself on being quick to implement "House Rules" to mitigate bugs or unbalanced play.  Gears 2 will not be the "be all and end all" of games.  As far as I'm concerned, I'm sticking by Gears 2 even if it's only a 30% reduction in host advantage.  Gears is MY Star Wars!  Epic seems like they've truly worked hard at focusing on the MP experience.  I'm a Gears fanatic through and through.  As consumers, we should demand that the game functions as well as it can possibly be.  However, nothing created by mortal man is absolutely perfect.  Plain and simple.  That's why it's ultimately left to our community to come to terms with game issues and bring about a solution as a whole.

If it is how Zos described it as rolling a 20 on a 20-sided die, then that's more acceptable imo.  Is it a good excuse for losing a battle that you should have won?  We'll find out in 27 days.

Gears is MY Star Wars!!! Wooohhh!!!

I agree with your "Gears is MY Star Wars" sentiment. Although really, Star Wars is still my Star Wars...;)

My the idea remains that we all have a certain passion for this game. I'm less forgiving in terms of defending the issues Gears has online but play a game of Gears with me and you won't hear too much complaining. I've accepted it and while I may trash the game on the boards, I'll still play it on Live.

  •  Just got back from a wedding (none / 0)

Wife went back out to party with her sister (just got married) and brother.  We put kids to bed and first thing I check after that is the website.

Suns you are right in talking more about this.

My thought is that in a perfect world, we would have a game that was 100% perfect.  No lag.  No host.  And most importantly consistancy in shooting.  I hate it when guys like Blankman stop playing after the "think" they're downed by boomshot or torque that sticks but doesn't blow them up.  It is the honorable thing, but it sucks to have to guess about stuff.

Or how one time it takes one shotty to blow a guy and then another time it takes 4 point blank shots.

I would just like to know!  Is it the game/lag or am I really just that shitty and missed the guy three times before I actually hit him with the fourth.  I hate wondering.  I could live with the results.  Does this make sense?

But this is not a perfect world and I guess we are probably going to have to brace ourselves for something that is likely to be between Gears 1 and "A Perfect World".

Either way, we will love it.  But I always wish for a perfect world.

Okay, now I'm done with the posting stuff.  It is 1am and I am still wide awake.  See you guys in the room in a second!.... "-)

Also, don't be surprised if the sequel is plagued with problems. I've heard many GearHeads state, "That won't happen in Gears 2."

It will. I'm almost sure of it. Hopefully, Gears 2 will be just as good, if not better than its predecessor in every way. Only time will tell though.

I'll be able to talk about MP to my hearts content on Wednesday. So if you have any questions...
