MP Questions For David (1Up)

Sun Oct 12, 2008 at 08:15:09 PM EST

In the Speak Now diary, David graciously offered to answer our questions about Gears of War 2 Multiplayer starting on Wednesday.  I figure, we could start posting questions now, and then we will have a head start on Wednesday.  Again, David won't be able to start answering questions until Wednesday, but there is no reason that we can't get our questions ready for him before that time.  David, thanks very much for this!

One other thing, I know that, I for one, am suffering from Anticipation-itis, and am getting pretty short-tempered and rant-y.  So, I would just like to offer a couple of suggestions to keep us all on task, and keep the atmosphere light and respectful:

1   Read the list and try not to repeat others' questions.
2   If someone has somehow missed the original mention, and you notice that there is a repeat question, please mention it respectfully with just the following phrase "Already asked.  Please see above."
3   If you have a different take on a question already provided, just reply to that original question.  (If someone makes a mistake and doesn't "reply" in the proper thread, please be forgiving of each other, we are all just getting used to the new format of Gearheadsofwar.com.)
4   Please, if someone posts what you think is a dumb question, propose a better question on the same topic - or just simply ignore it.  The best way to deal with foolish posts is to ignore them (at least until some day when administrators will either be able to delete them, or lock the threads.)

Cheers!  No spoilers in MP (except for the discussion of certain Locusts that might appear in the latter levels of Horde).  Discuss away.  Personally, I have been waiting for news on MP for months now.

  •  David, Epic has mentioned in numerous (none / 0)

interviews that there were some 400+ tweaks to the cover system.  Some of the most egregious problems in Gears 1 were:

    i) getting stuck on cover,
ii) sliding into cover when that wasn't one's intention,
iii) mantling cover twice (e.g., climbing over the cover and then doing it again and ending up in mid-air with your pants-down, so to speak.)

How does the movement/cover system feel?  Is there a noticeable difference?  Will we all be able to start moving around the map with the beauty and grace of Gacky and Zoso? ...You don't have to answer this last one.  ;)

  •  Have you played all the new MP maps? (none / 0)

For whatever maps you have played, what are their names?  We know about Avalanche and the "environmental hazard there.  How about other environmental hazards? Please tell us about them in as great detail as you have time for! :)

  •  Here's another one, Dave. (none / 0)

There is some confusion about the melee in Gears 2.  Is there a stun effect that follows the melee?  Or are we correct in believing that the melee will only cause damage, but no stun whatsoever?

Gears is MY Star Wars!!! Wooohhh!!!

  •  Could you tell us what the "Active Reload" (none / 0)

is for each weapon?  We are quite certain that the active reload for the Longshot, for example, is a quicker reload with no boost in power.

  •  If you plant your grenade in the wall........ (none / 0)

and then meet your virtual maker is your grenade still active?

  •  Randomness... (none / 0)

My thought is that in a perfect world, we would have a game that was 100% perfect.  No lag.  No host.  And most importantly consistancy in shooting.  I hate it when guys like Blankman stop playing after the "think" they're downed by boomshot or torque that sticks but doesn't blow them up.  It is the honorable thing, but it sucks to have to guess about stuff.

Or how one time it takes one shotty to blow a guy and then another time it takes 4 point blank shots.

I would just like to know!  Is it the game/lag or am I really just that shitty and missed the guy three times before I actually hit him with the fourth.  I hate wondering.  I could live with the results.  Does this make sense?

But this is not a perfect world and I guess we are probably going to have to brace ourselves for something that is likely to be between Gears 1 and "A Perfect World".

Either way, we will love it.  But I always wish for a perfect world.

David what are your thoughts from playing MP?  Did you feel like when you shot at something, they were downed or killed in the appropriate manner?

  •  David, (Not a question) (none / 0)

Feel free to take our questions and make a feature for 1Up, if you like.  I have a feeling there is going to be a lot of good questions, and it takes time to answer them, so why not get credit at your work for doing this.  In any case, whatever form it takes, thanks for the info in advance!

  •  My question (none / 0)

is pacing. With the introduction of stopping power does is sometimes lead to boring stalemates of 1v1 or 2v2, where people are just basically shooting the wall the other guy is behind, or are the maps built well enough so that theres enough flanking sections and such so that doesn't really become an issue.

Also, how often do shotty battles breakout and if they do, is the shotgun still as inconsistent as it was in Gears 1?

And finally, when chainsawing or in any kind of execution animation and you're killed is the other guy automatically dead? or is there a second of "grace" you could say, example the guy gets headshotted before he brings his foot down or punches the guy in the face.
