Since I have admin priviledges, I don't know exactly what features you do and do not have, but I thought I would provide just a few hints on how to make a new diary and how to set your display prefs.

First of all, when trying to read the comments in a diary, I have found that if I set my prefs as follows, I don't always have to keep changing them.  (See the green underlined areas for my selections.  (If you choose "Always", those prefs stay the same for all comments etc.)

Second, on creating a diary.  If you don't have these buttons, then please forgive me.  When I tried to create my first diary, I couldn't figure out why I kept getting "Preview" and the button never changed to "Publish".  Then I scrolled down.  After you preview the diary, then you can scroll WAY WAY down, and in the middle there will be a "Publish" button.  Let me know if this is the case for you.  If it isn't, then the overall site settings are too strict and no one but admin can publish diaries.
