RANT - Matchmaking

Tue Nov 11, 2008 at 06:18:19 PM EST

WTF Happened with the matchmaking in Gears 2.

I love the game, the campaigns great and online has been pretty good if you manage to get into a game but honestly, how did they f*** up the match making so that it takes 10 minutes to find a match. Seriously was there no testing done?

OMG This needs to be fixed because its f***ing terrible. End of rant.

  •  I seem to recall Halo (none / 0)

taking forever the first week too. Wait a few days.

There's just some wierd chemical reaction that goes on between the cat food, beer, and glue that makes you feel really sick!

    •  Halo took a couple extra minutes the first few (none / 0)

games while it figured out your settings, but not to this length.

    •  true that (none / 0)

Last time i tried to Play Halo online i had the same problem, and i have had NO problems with Matchmaking.

My advice: Make sure you NAT is open, it says in the menu that if your NAT is moderate or strict, you will have to wait longer to find games.

Halo 3 actually prompted mY NAT to close lol. Don't know why.

      •  the problem is (none / 0)

that netgear fucking sucks. I have dedicated so many hours to trying to open my nat on my wireless setup with absolutely no success. Halo took me 10 minutes to find a game, gears takes me 20. I also could not even host in the first gears.

I think the perfect solution would be to have the parties of gears 2, but the match hosting system of gears1; I loved that! When playing ranked, I was always able to join a match that filled up quickly, I dont ever remember waiting anywhere close to the time that I haved waited for gears 2. I almost always just end up playing private horde. Also, why can't you play public xbox live with a guest!? Is microsoft that cheap that they want households with multiple people and only one xbox to own to accounts.

but i think Microsoft is where the fingers should be pointed at.

          •  Point the finger and you have 4 pointing back... (none / 0)

Nah anyway... I have no issues with matchmaking. What would Microsoft have to do with the matchmaking system that epic wrote for their game?

Public is ranked... you need a gold account for ranked. Being cheap would be charging you what it actually costs to host all the content and bandwidth etc... that is used to run live instead of a small amount like $45 a year. Also signing someone up for a free silver account gets you one month of gold subscription. How hard is that?

Not to be a dick, but some of us work at these places... and I get tired of hearing it when there are no facts involved...

            •  When did i ever complain about the price of live (none / 0)

              or gold accounts?

That being said, you are saying microsoft has no part in the matchmaking system for GEARS? They are the publisher and have dudes working on the game right? And doesn't microsoft have a standard system? True Skill?

And the issues were with live's problems with NAT.

bringing guests on live for public matches?

I see your point there, but how much does all gold users times 50 add up too?

I mean, obviously XBL offers much more, but i was able to play on PSN for free without lag with LOTS of people in resistance (a game that sucks). Is Sony really taking it in the pants THAT much?

                •  Yeah they are... (none / 0)

Their profits are down by 90% this year... The only thing making them money is people buying PS3 as bluray players and that is starting to trail off now that sony has decent blu ray players out there that are cheaper than the PS3.

              •  Publish means we put it out to the stores. (none / 0)

Publish is not develope. The match making times are not live related, and the NAT is router dependant. Live doesn't change your NAT, it simply works optimaly when NAT is open. That is a function of your router.

                •  EPIC has said that Microsoft (none / 0)

and them are looking into the slow matchmaking times. Why would microsoft need to help if its their only job to publish?

We have great testers and people who know the live system inside and out, any time a company has issues that affect live gameplay we are going to help out...

I am not on the xbox or live side of the house but this is just very common throughout the company, when hardware makers have issues we help them to find issues as well even though they wrote their own drivers.

  •  getting better (none / 0)

Matches for me have been getting much better lately. But then again, I play Horde, Public Elimination or Public Wingman and they seem to fill pretty quick.

But I have found that when it gets stuck in the looking for partners loop, the first time it restarts, cancel and then start matchmaking again and it seems to pick people up much faster the second time.

  •  Also... (none / 0)

Matchmaking in gears 1 took much longer since you had to wait for a room to fill up. The only option you had to make it quicker was picking a match that already had 6 or more people in it. So honestly Gears 2 is quicker for me than gears 1 ever was.

    •  I dont know if I would call what Gears 1 had (none / 0)

matchmaking. At first Gears 2 matchmaking was kind of slow but it has gotten a lot better. A few of us played forever last night and got into games fairly quickly. I think we had like a 20 match win streak as well.

  •  I've been too scared to try it. (none / 0)

But I'm hopeful it won't be too bad...Halo 3 has only taken 3 mins tops to find a game. Crossing fingers for Gears 2!

  •  slow to connect (none / 0)

I have a pretty good connection and usually have no issues connecting with other games but I have had to wait to connect with #2. I wait the longest when I am by myself and my wait time decreases with each additional person in my party. My Nat is open.

Noobpancake- I played with a guest Thursday night till my friend remembered his password for Live. You have to sign the guest in like with Gears1. Don't remember what screen it was that I signed the guest in from cause it was late and I was a little faded.

  •  . (none / 0)

I haven't had a problem with match making yet but let me tell you, if you end up playing by yourself it sucks.

There is no party up option so after every game your kicked back in to your own lobby, and forced to search for four teamates again.

Not to mention if someone quits out, your screwed as there is no joining a game in progress, also there is no quit button? Like that's really going to stop people from quitting.

But I'll go back to my beastly chainsaw and smoke grenade combo, now.

  •  I was playing (none / 0)

with Boxin's bro and a few of their friends and we had no trouble whatsoever. As well as me runnin' trains on these noobs. 17-4 in my last match, 12-1 in the first... Man I was ripping it up. And after tonight, I will gladly say this; Gears2 is the best game ever conceived by man.

I got a torque bow headshot on Really Doe earlier. While he was rolling.  I thought it was going to get him in the feet, when all of a sudden, his head popped off.

    I can now die happy.

  •  Well heres my two cents (none / 0)

I absolutely loved the campaign and horde.  both super fun to play co-op

That being said i absolutely hate the regular online matches

I hate how long it takes
I hate how laggy some games are
I hate how I always have to play gametypes I dont enjoy
I hate how i have yet to play even half the levels due to voting
I hate how unstoppable the chainsaw is
I hate how no one uses the shotgun anymore
I hate how powerful the mortar is
I hate how i get the dirty disc error regularly
I hate how 5 on 4 games happen regularly
I hate how sometimes my gun dissapears and i have unlimited bullets that do no damage

Dont get me wrong.  I love this game. I am still constantly playing this game.  I just wish they kept the good from the old game and fixed only the problems.

    •  Oh almost forgot (none / 0)

I very much love my new gold lancer :)

      •  well (none / 0)

When the host wasn't involved shotgun battles could be pretty epic and super fun.  You couldn't walk from 20 feet away with your saw revving and score a kill. You could find a level you liked in a gametype you liked.

I am only talking about public matchmaking.

Private is more fun because it is with people you know and you can choose what you like.  And if you dislike a certain feature you could talk about not using it,  Unfortunately i dont know enough people to play private at all times

        •  That's what Gearheads is for (none / 0)

There are playlists to choose from during matchmaking. I really don't see how you can't find a gametype you like to play. The map thing I will agree with you on because sometimes you have to play the same map over and over if someone on your team doesn't vote. With the chainsaw thing, I'm sorry but if you can't stop a guy from 20 feet away coming at you with a saw revved then you need to check your aim.

I dont like guardian in the least and it gets picked all the time

I was obviously overstating the distance.  But no matter how good you are if you come around a corner to a guy revving and you have shotgun you are done for 75% of the time.  Check out the epic forums, i'm not the only one

            •  If you came around a corner in gears 1 (none / 0)

and a guy had a saw revved you were done for. I had over 3000 chainsaws in Gears 1 so I know this for a fact. I've seen the forums, most of the guys on there just bitch about how the shotgun isn't the same anymore. Just because they don't know how to adapt to something. They try and use it like they did in Gears 1 from 30 feet away. It's a shotgun. It's made for close range.

              •  I am talking short range (none / 0)

In gears 2 a person revving their chainsaw is not stunned by being shot with a shotgun and a lot of time it takes several shots to kill with the shotty.

In gears 1 if a guy came at me i had that split second to get a shot off and stun the sawer.

                •  You have to hit them multiple times (none / 0)

One shot doesn't stun people anymore. There are two really simple solutions to stopping someone with a chainsaw. 1: Roll backwards and shotgun them or turn and run. Or my preferred method 2: Don't run around with your shotgun out like a dumbass and keep your lancer out until you get into close combat. You can either lance a person with their saw out which stuns them fairly quickly, or if all else fails you can end up in a duel. There is a reason that you start with your lancer in your hand first. Because it is your primary weapon. People didn't understand that about Gears 1 and most still don't understand it about Gears 2. Gears 2 is the being played the way Epic wanted Gears 1 to be played. With the lancer. Using the shotgun as a last resort.

                  •  Well (none / 0)

I have been in many situations where i have had the lancer out and hit every shot on a target and it didn't stop them from chain sawing.  I have also done the opposite where i have walked at a target  with my saw and been lancered not stopped and still gotten the saw in.  In my opinion it is flawed.  You are entitled to your opinion Jambi but feel free to keep your rude comments to yourself.

    •  Oh and the only thing I agree on (none / 0)

is the thing about your gun disappearing. That bugs me but will probably be fixed.

      you hate EVERYTHING LOL :)

  •  i wish (none / 0)

they kept gears 1's online matchmaking system (the way you can just join any match with however many people in it) but kept that party system so you could play with your friends on ranked. I often jus end up playing horde which i have completed twice =[. However, i like the way there isn't host advantage anymore =].

I am also finding it difficult to adjust to that dam lancer as i am too used to pulling out the shottie at the start of the round and blowing people to bits (fun times).

ps: chainsaw's are so annoying lol

  •  honestly... (none / 0)

I havent had one instance where it took me more than MAYBE 2-3 minutes to find a match. I have no problem(s) with the lobby/party system and the matchmaking in general.
