For The Love of All Things Holy: GOW2 Gets Played

READ OTHER GEARHEAD IMPRESSIONS INSIDE!!!

As many of you may or may not know, i got Gears of War 2 yesterday at my local 7 Eleven.

First and foremost, may all the thankfulness of the world go to David Ellis, who is a legend among men.

Now to the good stuff. I have to right this before heading off to the same old grind today, so i am going to list facts about Gears 2 (opinions?) based on my time with the game.

Less' do dis.

  • Graphics: Omg. There seems to be little additions to everything that make the game seriously shine. Especially with all the new variations in environments. The amount of blood is also crazy. Super colorful! And on top of it all, little touches like destructable environments add A LOT. Lots of new animations as well!
  • Gameplay: Playing the game for the first time, it felt Different. But after 5-10 minutes, it was unbelievable and i was in constant awe. This is one of the best feeling shooter games. Picking a dude up as a meat sheild is the most efficient tactic in the game so far.
  • Multiplayer: Have barely played any, BUT... Machete hosted a game that i joined, and i had no bullet lag at all. He is in New Jersey, I am in Washington.
  • Audio: MY FAVORITE ADDITION. Every gun holds so much more weight. The snob pistol sounds ridiculous EVERY SHOT. And you watch the bullet trail.

The cutscenes are amazing, the guns are SICK. Everything is balanced and solid. Matchmaking is like Halo's system, where you are all in a lobby before campaign, horde etc.

This is the best game i have ever played. Bar none.

There will be no going back to Gears of War 1. There would be no reason at all. This is everything that game represented and MORE.

Peace and Love!

Machete:
So far,I completely agree with zoso. If I were to describe the difference between gears 1 and 2 in one word, I would say that gears 2 is "tighter". Sliding into cover and swat turning are now much quicker and can be interrupted. Overall, the cover system is much more polished than in the original and I haven't had one of those frustrating gears 1 moments where you get stuck on cover.
As for the weapons, they all simply feel beefier. I think a huge factor in that feeling is the superb audio that really makes you feel like you're in the action with Delta squad. The biggest difference (other than the Hammerburst) is by far the shotty. I guess you could say that they "nerfed" it, but it feels MUCH better than in the original. It almost always takes 2-4 shots to down someone now, but despite its lack of power, it is much more consistent. It takes more bullets to kill someone, but the bullets that should hit do hit. And Kenai, the torque bow headshot is glorious (btw, you can line people up and get multiple headshots with 1 arrow).

BluePhaze: I got to play some this morning and have to say +100000 to everything Zoso said. Outside of that, a couple of items I noted:

Weapon Feel... The weapons feel a bit different at first, I realized that it is due to the fact that they aim much more smoothly. It through me off at first as I am used to the aim being just a bit more jerky. Once you are used to it, accuracy is crazy! It is very easy to hit the exposed bits of players in cover or through the little gaps in the environment.

This is also helped by the fact that the spread on the lancer and hammer burst are so much tighter than before! Between the tighter spread, and the tracer trails that the bullets leave behind, BLIND FIRE IS BACK as a valid tactic! You can be crazy accurate from blind fire especially with the lancer and hammer burst.

The Hammer Burst is amazing... not just in damage, but in the steadiness and now the extra level of zoom added to it. It is more powerful than the lancer on a per bullet basis and more accurate especially with the zoom. So long distance the hammer is my choice over the Lancer...

The SHOTGUN IS KING! The shotty is not what it always should have been, I have not had one moment of WTF with it so far. It is CONSISTENT! And very tight at close range, you can now better gauge your chances of hitting distant oponents with it much better due to the afore mentioned tracers.

Stopping Power... Stopping power is amazing, I decided to rush a group of Locust who were in cover, and just their blind fire slowed me to the point where I knew I would never make it to them. This will SO CHANGE THE GAME! I had to make sure I was using cover effectively and not count on the fact I could shake off a few shots. Because a few shots slows you enough to where you will take many more shots if you don't find cover quick!

Weapon Damage... It may just be me, but I swear you can take A LOT more damage/shots now from most weapons and keep goin. I think this had to be done to stop people from being juiced to a pulp whenever stopping power kicked in.

So be prepared, just hitting someone with a clip from the lancer may not be enough to take them down unless you are dead on center with it and have an active reload. But that could be just my impression based on playing against bots.

Bots... Bot AI is good, not perfect, but they will try to take the high ground and flank you as well, they also revive each other and provide cover for the flankers. Feels much more like a live match!

I will have more soon. I have finished the first chapter of campaign and played some bot matches on Day One so far.... more to come later....

TexasTrap: Just got my copy and this game kick more ass than chuck norris!  its so sweet.

Definitely need to get some more coop play in before I can make any judgments on the campaign (you game for a session later today zoso?).

    •  shotty (none / 0)

I don't think the nerf is on the Shotty as much as the fact that it takes many more shots to down someone with all weapons now. Lancer and Hammer do not down someone near as fast as in the last game. Not sure if they beefed up the life or toned down the damage but it is definitely a change. I think they had to though to avoid stopping power from being an instant killer.

  •  What about the story? (none / 0)

One of my biggest complaints with Gears 1 was that Cliff and company were throwing out comparisons to things like Band Of Brothers which had a great story, with great characters, but that realllllly wasn't the case. Did they manage to flesh it out? I think there's tons of potential for some good storytelling.

Apparently all the ways to do the glitches in Gears 1 also work for 2, but only a select few. Its not a big deal though. I guarantee you that wont happen during a normal match with Gearheads.

when Gearheads don't play like that?  As far as Epic patching bugs or glitches, you can count on it.  The game is hitting tomorrow, and we really need to cut them some slack.

MORE THAN ANYONE, I wanted to be able to play the game online when GearHeads aren't around.

Or heck, even go into matchmaking with GearHeads. Cutting Epic slack is fine, but at the same time simply ignoring HUGE glitches isn't helping anyone.

I'm not saying I didn't expect stuff like this, I'm just saying when it happen, "Fix it Epic!"

probably played the game online for about 8-10 hours and have not seen a single glitch. The matchmaking is 100% playable.

          •  How is anyone cutting slack? (none / 0)

There is no slack to cut.

And you tone sounded down on EPIC when you included "come on." As if in disbelief that such glitches would exist.

And what about a couple glitches prevents you from playing public matches? You do play Halo right? Tons of glitches still.

After spending time playing with people online that mostly illegally torrented the game on hacked xbox'x, i will say that nobody has been exploiting crazy invisibly glitches or anything.

BUT, one major issue does exist, you can barely stun a guy running with a chainsaw. But this i expect will be fixed via a patch soon.

This is not a glitch, but what do you think about the chainsaw?

              Seemed pretty Powerful last night?!

I shottied someone point blank.  .1 sec later, I was being chainsawed.

I chainsawed someone in the same way later in the match....

saying that the chainsaw is like that now, because now you arent in "god mode" anymore during executions, and you can get killed during them. So now the chainsaw is harder to defend against, but its easier to kill the chainsawer now.

is that you HAVE to play this game completely different than the first. You can't go running around with just your Shotgun out anymore or otherwise you won't even touch the enemy. And with the new changes with the saw it helps reduce the continuous close-quarter combat.

I've watched enough vids, and have heard/read enough impressions to know that it plays a lot different, which for me, is a positive thing. Honestly, I hate all the shotgun battles during matches, and shotty battles in general. I like to play rounds that are somewhat time-consuming. I really hate rounds that end in less than a minute.
