Mark Rein Responds to GOW2 Issues

Wed Dec 03, 2008 at 12:57:28 AM EST

Guys,

Just relax folks. We are going to make improvements to the multiple aspects of the multiplayer portion of the game over time. I'm confident that many of the things that concern you will be addressed. There is no point us getting down in the weeds with complex explanations (that are over my head anyway) because often it is a series of minor things that fix major issues you might be having. Regardless of what specific development techniques we use there are likely some bugs that have to be squashed as well to make those techniques work the way you expect. Just chill folks, we're on the job!

This was in reply to the crazy mofo's raising hell over at the official forums.

Thanks, Zos.  Yeah, Epic needed to at least address the people. ...or they could expect pitchforks and torches outside their doors late at night.  LOL.

It is unfortunate that they couldn't give a hardcore Gears community (like us) the opportunity to play a beta.  (at the very least, I suspect it would have added another 6 months to the development cycle).  However, it didn't require 5 million gamers playing 24/7 for 3 weeks to discover these bugs.  We knew about many gameplay issues, exploits, and bugs within the first hour or two of MP play.

Anyway, there is tons of fun to be had even in its current state, and the update will be out before we know it. And collectively, that is probably much sooner than if they had given us a beta.

    This is good news!

most MP betas are more focused on PR and hype than actually addressing bugs.

    But I totally agree, Suns.

  •  It's very chaotic over on those boards. (none / 0)

It's a shame that it's filled with so much negativity. :(  I'm glad that someone higher up in the food chain has finally put out a statement informing everyone that they will be fine tuning issues.  It's also disheartening to hear that Halo 3 has just reclaimed the XBL most played game for this last week only three short weeks since Gears 2's launch.  Although this is probably due in large part to the lengthy wait for MP Public games before the latest patch was released last Wednesday, I wouldn't be surprised that Gears 2 will assume the top position once again.  There are so many cheaters that use exploits and glitches that many have probably set the game aside until issues are resolved.  Sheesh.

have been really disappointed with the online portion of Gears 2. Its riddled with cheaters and lag. Almost every ranked game I have played at least 1 person has been doing some sort of game altering glitch. And the worst part is if everyone is doing it, you cant leave the match. Maybe I'm just unlucky and have been playing with these scum bags by chance, but Epic does need to address these things.

I'm a pretty normal guy. I do one weird thing. I like to go in woman's room for number 2.

  •  GearHeads or bust! (none / 0)

It's a sad step to take, but when a company lets you down, you gotta turn to a community you can trust...in this case, the BA group we call "GearHeads"! Epic provided the game, we provide the online social and fair functionality!

    I love you guys

  •  I don't see how this many issues can slip through (none / 0)

Sure it's a complex game, but this is unacceptable. Testing should have caught some of this garbage.

I shouldn't have to play private matches with a small group of people just to have fun in a game.

    •  without a beta (none / 0)

it is hard to test because the amount of testers on a team compared to millions of online gamers... big difference. On top of that, the more people that play online, the more glitches and things must happen.

    •  Why don't (none / 0)

you get a team together and make a game? This shit's gonna happen with any game. Stop busting their balls, just deal with it and stop whining your asses off. If you hate it so much, only play it with Gearheads and Bots.

      •  actually (none / 0)

theres some out of map glitches that should have been caught in WaW, but like Gears is obviously not a perfect game.

        •  That's true, (none / 0)

In the beta there was a glitch to get under one of the maps, and in the full game there is another map called downfall that people get under.  That's the only major glitch I've noticed in WaW.  They even fixed the modded controller issue by detecting when the guns fire too fast, and then limiting the fire rate for the rest of the match after it has been set off.

      •  I never said I could make a better game, (none / 0)

but I'm not being paid to do so.  This shit doesn't happen with "any game".  I have never had this kind of trouble connecting to games. I haven't really been on xbox a lot in the past couple days so maybe that's resolved by now.

Like I've said, Gearheads aren't always online, and bot a.i. just doesn't stand up to playing against a real person.

        •  I know lol (none / 0)

          the AI doesnt miss hahah

        •  I'm not saying a "better" game. (none / 0)

If you woulda read what I said, it was referring to having glitches in games. I wasn't talking about the Connection issues either. Again, if you would've seen what was in your post and then read mine you would've seen I was talking about bugs / glitches in the game. Make sure you read a post and fully understand it, otherwise a heated discussion may occur.

  •  I expected more (none / 0)

What can I say? I expected the game to play like a champ out the gate, with smooth connections, no glitches, and an overall bulletproof MP experience. Our expectations were very high and that's a good thing.

I've experienced the range of problems discussed here and on the forums from a virtually unplayable horrible-lag game to a smooth connection. The first is so annoying that I played Halo 3 the rest of the night just to cool off. But god, when everything runs fine in Gears 2 it's completely amazing.

I played a match with 7 friends in a party system last night and it was so fun!! And funny! Because everyone is on the same chat channel you can hear your enemies nervous shrieks as you hunt them down. And you can hear them shout out "Oh shit, he's got the mortar, get the fuck outta here!". The party system chat channel is definitely something we all should try.
