Re-invigorated on Call of Duty 4

OK, so I'll admit it, once I finally got to Level 55 on COD4 I kind of lost a little luster for the game.  Don't get me wrong, it's still a ton of fun (especially because I have my settings set to Friends only on XBL and don't have to hear all the douchelords out there).  But the thing is that knowing that I'm not going to unlock anything else isn't that inspiring anymore.  And prestige isn't all that appealing either.  I'm going to go through it all again just so I can get a better medal?  Seriously?  I don't think so.

Really the only thing outside of the pure fun of the game (which is awesome regardless) keeping me going on it now is to get my kill/death ratio to a respectable place.  I've been working on it ever so slowly.  I've gone from a low of about .70 to now I'm all the way up to .84, which is an accomplishment when you consider how many kills and deaths I have in this game.  It's really hard to move the needle once you get so far in the hole.

So I've done the natural thing and moved some of my game time to my PS3 and Call of Duty 4 over there.  I've actually found it to be exciting again in the leveling up one more time, but I will say that the lag on PS3 that I've experienced is a LOT worse than 360.  Either that or most of the people using PS3s just have really poor connections.  I will say that my K/D ratio is already even over there, even going against guys who have much higher ranks, I've been holding my own.

But it's not just the leveling up.  I'm really excited for the new maps, especially after reading IGN's preview today and watching some of the videos of the maps.  One of my biggest complaints about COD4 is the MP maps.  There are just too many where one team has a distinct advantage over the other team.  Not to mention the aesthetics of the maps are all pretty similar.  Chinatown looks freaking awesome as does the Broadcast map.  Obviously these will be immediate purchases for me when they come out (hopefully in April).

By the way, I'm traveling tonight and won't be back until late Wednesday, so don't go all Tom Cruise on me and have Poland sliding in in his tighty whities singing along to Bob Seger, mmmm-kay?

I cannot

wait for China Town aka Carentan. I definitely agree that it loses some of its luster after getting to 55, but once you start using new weapons, it feels like a brand new game. Oh, and I can't make any promises about Poland... ;)

finally someone sees the side

I don't play COD4 on 360 [where most of my friends are], but on PS3 [a slight percent of where my friends are]; Same squat anyways.

I am at around the same level you are, 53.
I play with friends, cousins, and after playing it so long I realize that COD4 is like any other shooter. Sure, it got some upgrades and such but it justs a FPS all over again.

Sorry to come back to this, but GEARS OF WAR is a whole different game. Ill even add in Rainbow Six.
There's not much of them around so that's what makes them different.
[Oh yeah, they have to be good.. no Army of Two, that sucked]

So yeah, COD4 is boring to me now. It's collecting dust and my k/d ratio is 1.88
Win/Loss is 1.23

Streaks are 17, then 12.

Blah, gloat much

It

just seems the more I play this game the more fun I have.  The reason for me to do prestige is the fact that after going through the game once it kind of gets boring not unlocking anything else, it just makes the game fun to keep playing MP to level up again, I've actually started over again.  As for the lag on PS3 I don't get nearly as much lag as on the 360, must be our different locations.  The connection error hardly ever comes up.  The new maps are going to be awesome, I hope we get these in April as well.  Papi have a safe trip and we will keep Poland in a calm state to not be dancing around the living room in his tighty whities ;) LOL

A suggestion

Papi, delete your CoD4 save on your 360.  That resets everything, doesn't it - or is all that data stored on IW servers?  You will have to level up again, but you will get a fresh start at a decent K/D ratio.

I can't wait for the new maps, either.  TeamXbox has  5 HD downloadable videos. I recommend them.

I'm still having a lot of fun.

CoD 4 for me was not about unlocking the weapons.  Sure, I wanted better weapons & the higher rank.  However, the camaraderie of having my Gearhead buddies playing with me was and still is the best experience.  I can really care less if I'm getting my ass handed to me by my fellow Gearheads.  The sidebar chatter that we have, the laughs, the teamwork are what keeps me playing the MP games whether it's Gears, CoD 4, Condemned 2, etc.  "Good times with good people" has always been our unofficial motto.  I wholeheartedly believe that this is what sets our community apart from the "clans" out there.  It's kind of ironic that this past FFF, our opponents referred to our[GHoW] tag as a "clan."  We're just a dedicated community that likes to game together.  Plain & simple.  Take Suns for instance, he has the fastest connection out of all of us.  Yet, when he connects to us here in the states & Canada (didn't forget my Canuck brothers-hehe), his lag is utter crap.  Yet, he's the nicest guy that you'll ever meet.  3Suns games with us because of the good times & kinship that we've developed with many of us gaming together for over a year now.  Attitude like that is contagious & it's what keeps me coming back for more.

The new CoD 4 maps will inject more excitement back into the game, Papi.  That's a no-brainer.  Since Gears 2 isn't here yet, try Condemned 2 on for size.  I know the MP isn't what you should pick up this game for.  The single player alone is worth the full price of admission.  Consider the MP as an extra helping.  I know I've beaten Condemned 2 like a dead horse lately, but many of the Gearheads will vouch for the sheer fun of this title.  Heck, you can waste your money on Turning Point: Fall of Liberty, Tenchu Z, or Frontlines (just kidding, Poland); you won't regret it with Condemned 2.  It was pure terror when Machete came into that small room while we were scanning the head in the ice chest with one of us covering our back & we all died by his sledgehammer.  You can't simply put that experience & fun into words.  Gearheads fo life, yo!  Hahaha!

Breakin' Bs off!!! Wooohhh!!!

Good times and kinship!

That IS what it is all about!

And thanks for the kind words, Blank!  The sheer energy of your war cries, the life saving alerts, your thrill of victory and agony of defeat, turn XBL gaming into a LAN experience - for all of us! Thank you, Blankman!  It is for that, and getting owned by everyone, and hearing everyone's laughter, and their excitement about the latest games news, and the odd personal tidbit and words of encouragement, that I look forward all week to our gaming on the weekends.

And the new maps are going to be great.

war cries, my silence

because my kids will wake up, i play all games in virtual silence, it is the one quality of gaming(and a huge part of gaming) that i miss out on, i really dont communicate much because i have to whisper so no one would hear me anyway but i never get to experience the full sound of gears or cod4/ from what i hear through the headset must be nice to hear someone creep up on you from behind, turn around and knife them

I can't tell you how many times...

my wife has come into the living room & told me about how loud I am on our FFFs.  My little girl & her have a hard time falling asleep because I just too intense when I play.  I know what you mean, Degrees.  Have you tried the Turtle Beach X3 headset?  Poland has a Turtle Beach (not sure which model), & he swears by it.  http://www.turtlebeach.com/products/gaming-headphones.aspx?gclid=CP2YvZD-lpICFRYoawodtxMN_g

Yeah....

I have this one:

http://www.turtlebeach.com/products/efx3/home.aspx

It was $99, worth the price of the noise.  The only noise my wife complains about is me yelling in the mic.   But the mic, it works very well and picks up sound well, when i have to whisper when my wife sleeps.

Had a bad night tonight playing

How come the RPD (or whatever it is called) can have  a range to rival the snipers and is almost always an easy kill?

Played some 1v1 on sniper maps trying to have some fun with it, and kept getting pwned by other weapons long ranged when i had a sniper. Switched to an m16 and pwned, but the problem is, using a sniper should be easily better for long range instances

I haven't tried the other guns

very much, so I don't know how they hold up.  I do know that I get sniped by people with sniper class guns all the time, and that with my M16, I miss them all the time.  But, if the M16 seems like the best all-round gun, use it.

I am sure that since the accuracy and power of the hits of ALL the guns are based on numbers and mathematical calculations, there are specific and verifiable advantages and disadvantages to each gun.  I am not picking on you here, Zoso, but I have heard several people complain about that gun.  However, I am convinced that it isn't unbalanced among the weapons, because if it were, it would be the only weapon used, (like the pistol in H1).  It isn't.  In any game of 16 or 18 players, you will only find 2 or 3 per game that are sporting the M16.

I use the M16, because it does have some range, it doesn't have overwhelming kick-back (my aim is bad enough), and it is the gun I am most familiar with because of single player missions.

I think the problem is

that there is zero deviation from where you put your red dot/iron sights, to where the bullet goes.  IMO IW needs to make it vary a little where your bullets go because I have the same thing happen to me a lot when I snipe.  I've been killed numerous times across Bloc while I am sniping, by someone with an M4 Carbine, or a P90.

I hate the snipe now...

theres like a large circle around the crosshairs where you can kill someone in it, watch the killcam sometimes, its bull, if they can't get the cross hair on you it shouldnt kill you, unless of course the deviation rule you speak of is in effect and we just dont know about it.

I think that Killhouse has some potential.

It is close quarters like Shipment, but without the symmetry.  I think it could be a lot of fun for specific gametypes.  It may end up being yet another Raven Down, but maybe not.  Even if so, I will still enjoy it in small doses, at least.

As for the other maps, they sure look pretty and fun.

I have to say, the draw distance in CoD4 still blows me away.  I find myself marveling at the clarity with which I can see from one end of the map to the other.  The other day, from across the map, I saw someone in a ghillie suit shuffle into position.  It just amazed me.

A couple of years ago the textures in games were out of wack.  The closer you got to them, the blurrier they got.  Their clarity didn't change appropriately with the distance.  Now, it all changes as it should - or at least, there must be enough smoke and mirrors that I am fooled by it.  Anyway, it sure is pretty.  And the animations of those guys running around just kills me.  So realistic.  Cool that a game can still delight me even after I have played it for 3 24 hour days!

I wish

I could say that I got bored of COD4 but I just cant and wont.  Im on my 8th prestige now (2 of these were done while home visiting fam and not working for 12 days)  Ive completely changed all my classes around now and even the weapons I use.  I was a pure M16'r with stopping power and martrydom and well now I wouldn't even think of this set up.  My 2 fave guns are now the MP5/P90 silenced with stopping power and extreme conditioning makes for great flanking.  By the time they realize that those shots that they're getting hit from is behind them they're all hittin X to get rid of the Kill Cam that shows how badly they were flanked.  Now with the addition of new maps I know that Ill be logging even more hours.  I just wish I could put the game down and start playing a few other games that I have be ignoring! DAMN YOU IW!

Prestige increases the overall appreciation COD4

The medals are the smallest part of the prestige system.  There are a million ways to get to 55.  If you use the same weapon and play the same game type the same way, it can get boring quick.

I'm the kind of person that likes to hang back with an ACOG M14, put on the UAV jammer and use claymores to cover my six.  Leveling up to a new medal, you have to throw that kit out the window and adapt to a different set of tactics.

The challenges also reset.  In one round of prestige, you probably only hit 1/3 of the challenges.  By going through more than once, you see a lot of cool aspects of the game that you might overlook the first time.

I'm on Medal 6 now.  It's the Saudi Liberation of Kuwait medal.  The one that looks like a golden bee hive.  Anyway, my thing this time around is silenced MP5 with suppressor and extreme conditioning for fast and loose CQB.  I also use a G3 with suppressor for the bigger maps.  Did I mention hardcore.  Oh yes! Hardcore!

Great posts, carr and Scotty!

Thanks for sharing the info/experiences.  See, that is the thing, the AAA games these days are really deep and have the potential to entertain us for many months, if other new games don't come out.
