Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying all PS3 owners are dickheads, otherwise, I'd be calling myself a dickhead, but I've just noticed a bunch of really shitty online behavior from PS3 owners lately. In particular with respect to Call of Duty 4. Check out this thread from fourzerotwo's blog. Read some of the comments from the PS3 owners in the comment section.
This isn't the first place I've seen it either. Check out this blog post over at Stephen Totilo's multiplayer blog. For some reason, you just see a lot of angry PS3 fans there. They immediately start accusing Totilo of being in MS's pocket and whatnot.
So it got me to wondering why this is the case? I have a theory and call me crazy, if you'd like. But here it is. PlayStation fans are pretty infatuated with their console. Probably more so than Xbox fans just simply because the PlayStation brand has a much longer legacy than Xbox and Microsoft. They've had a lot of great times with their PS consoles over the years. It's kind of like being in a long-term relationship which you've shared a lot of really exciting times with. At the same time, your friends are all single and jealous of your relationship. Then, out of nowhere, all your friends get hot girlfriends and are having a better time than you are.
See for a long time, PlayStation fans ruled the universe. They were essentially the Yankees of video gaming, taking over from Nintendo. They had years of being the dominant force in video gaming. And then came the PS3 and all the issues surrounding it, the biggest one being that there were no games for it when it launched whereas at least the 360 had Call of Duty 2. And much like Yankee fans, they don't really know how to lose gracefully. Not that they're losing, mind you, but the PlayStation brand has been under attack from all kinds of different angles. For a while, all they heard was how great their system was and how it sold so well and ruled all. Now you've got viral videos claiming that you killed your brand. You've also got the best gaming magazine on the planet splattering the PS3 with tomatoes for their cover. So you go from largely universal love to being attacked on a regular basis. No wonder they're pretty sensitive.
Maybe I'm wrong and misreading things, but it seems like there is an ANGRY group of PS3 fanboys out there. My theory may or may not be right, but I actually like my PS3 a whole lot more since MLB 08: The Show was released. It's certainly getting a lot more time from me. Will the anger go away as we get further into the year and the PS3 gets a few more games actually worth playing? I guess we shall see.
