Media Monday: PS3 Edition

Mon Mar 31, 2008 at 07:41:43 PM EST

Well, that's not really accurate.  I'm not really going to talk about specific media on PS3.  I'm more going to talk about the pure dickheadness of some of the PS3 owners out there.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying all PS3 owners are dickheads, otherwise, I'd be calling myself a dickhead, but I've just noticed a bunch of really shitty online behavior from PS3 owners lately.  In particular with respect to Call of Duty 4.  Check out this thread from fourzerotwo's blog.  Read some of the comments from the PS3 owners in the comment section.

This isn't the first place I've seen it either.  Check out this blog post over at Stephen Totilo's multiplayer blog.  For some reason, you just see a  lot of angry PS3 fans there. They immediately start accusing Totilo of being in MS's pocket and whatnot.

So it got me to wondering why this is the case? I have a theory and call me crazy, if you'd like.  But here it is. PlayStation fans are pretty infatuated with their console.  Probably more so than Xbox fans just simply because the PlayStation brand has a much longer legacy than Xbox and Microsoft.  They've had a lot of great times with their PS consoles over the years.  It's kind of like being in a long-term relationship which you've shared a lot of really exciting times with.  At the same time, your friends are all single and jealous of your relationship.  Then, out of nowhere, all your friends get hot girlfriends and are having a better time than you are.

See for a long time, PlayStation fans ruled the universe.  They were essentially the Yankees of video gaming, taking over from Nintendo.  They had years of being the dominant force in video gaming.  And then came the PS3 and all the issues surrounding it, the biggest one being that there were no games for it when it launched whereas at least the 360 had Call of Duty 2.  And much like Yankee fans, they don't really know how to lose gracefully. Not that they're losing, mind you, but the PlayStation brand has been under attack from all kinds of different angles.  For a while, all they heard was how great their system was and how it sold so well and ruled all.  Now you've got viral videos claiming that you killed your brand.  You've also got the best gaming magazine on the planet splattering the PS3 with tomatoes for their cover.  So you go from largely universal love to being attacked on a regular basis.  No wonder they're pretty sensitive.

Maybe I'm wrong and misreading things, but it seems like there is an ANGRY group of PS3 fanboys out there.  My theory may or may not be right, but I actually like my PS3 a whole lot more since MLB 08:  The Show was released.  It's certainly getting a lot more time from me.  Will the anger go away as we get further into the year and the PS3 gets a few more games actually worth playing?   I guess we shall see.

This is prevalent in this world.

Living in Michigan.  I get it from U of M football fans.  Most never even attended the school.

Maybe thats why I chose Michigan State a long time ago.  Had the choice of schools, but the people that  were going to State from my high school were "down to earth people".

Maybe that is why I am playing Xbox today.

Happy that I get to play.  Having fun, with a "lesser" console.

    Good stuff Papi

  •  Don't misunderstand... (none / 0)

I'm not condoning their reactions, but imagine if PS3 users were getting new content (Map packs, patches) consistently earlier than 360 users. I'd imagine that the reaction from Xbox owners would be very similar.
    •  I guess that could explain (none / 0)

the fourtwozero comments which are way over the line, but what about the totilo ones?  I know there are Xbox fans who can be just as bad, but I run into this all over the net with PS3 fans.  Stop fighting the fight and play some games.

also guess that they don't know that the 360 owners of COD4 are still experiencing the same problems as most of them mention.  Respawning looking up, on top of nades, right in a fire fight, all the connection errors, and not to forget getting all your friends in the same game the first time you try.  End rant :)  Maybe this will get fixed one of these days.  Papi have you tried Dark Sector yet??  I just finished, and I am in love with that game LOL ;)
  •  Actually, (none / 0)

from what I've seen at work, alot of PS3 owners are complete dickheads. They refuse to believe the advie I give them (yes those fucking cables will fit in your system!!!) and are alot of the time (remember, this is what I've seen) they are blind fanboys. I had a guy bash Halo once and say how much better CoD was and then say that is why the PS3 is better. When I told him that CoD was also on 360, he wouldn't believe me. I had to literally walk him over and show him the case of it in the 360 section :P. Oh well, alot of 360 owners are dickheads too so I don't know where I'm going with this...
  •  That is a hilarious analogy (none / 0)

papi.  (I am not saying that it is wrong, just very funny.)  N'Gai has some thematically related thoughts on all of that.  http://blog.newsweek.com/blogs/levelup/archive/2008/03/20/the-accidental-exclusive-or-why-is-ps3-sti ll-an-afterthought-among-devs.aspx

That there are such PS3 fans out there does not surprise me.  The only reason you don't find the same for MS's 360 is because:

    1. there is a general dislike for Microsoft for several reasons: a) they have been very clear in their intentions on monopolizing the computer OS and software industry, and have arguably succeeded in doing so, b) in general, but with some exceptions, their software has been awful (the "Blue Screen of Death" is a phrase well-known that is to software what the RRoD is to hardware).  Conversely, Sony, while expensive, has been a brand that you could buy and know that it would work out of the box and last as long as you wanted to use it.  Ultimately, with MS's lack of quality control in both software and hardware, you could call them the anti-Sony.* Many people, myself included, own the 360 in spite of the fact that Microsoft is the producer.

    2. the RRoD fiasco deserves its own category.  It has humbled any wannabe fanbois into submission, and is a source of huge frustration, embarrassment, inconvenience, and expense.

*Sony is quickly losing ground in the software quality advantage department as some of the third party games that can be played on both systems are "buggier" on the PS3. (Also, like Nintendo and Microsoft, they too, want to rule the world - they are just less effective at it than Microsoft).

PS3 is better than xbox or xbox better than PS3. Seriously i'mm gonna find the OP rip his head and shit down his throat.

Both consoles have advantages and disadvantages(spelling WGAF). The ONLY reason i have a 360 is that the games out and coming out get me going. Like ME, H3, COD4, DMC4, THuman, F2, NG2.
If there where more games that got me going on PS3 then i would have brought that.

Fanboys think there console is better and they dont take no for an answer. They are turning into the JThompson of gameing. Seriously no wounder the press and the goverment doesn't take gamers seriously.
