OK, I'm not one who typically loves Yahtzee's reviews on the Escapist.com. I think the reviews are usually extremely gimmicky and I've gotten pretty tired of them. Especially how everyone thinks that this is some sort of genius whereas he basically talks really fast and often states the obvious.

But I've got to say that this particular review resonated with me. I recently got a chance to try SSBB and I just didn't get all the love for the game. It was random and hard to even tell what the hell was going on. There was just a ton of crap on the screen at the same time and Yahtzee definitely nailed the fact that the action backs off the screen too much. I was baffled as to why this game was getting such ridiculously high scores and the only thing I could figure was that the people loved it for nostalgia sake. They love it because they have the ability to be pretty much any Nintendo character they dreamed of fighting against others. And even the epic battle that fanboys always dreamed about between Mario and Sonic.

I'm not coming down on the game, I just don't get it. I played it and it seemed like something that would be a really temporary thrill. Am I and Yahtzee way off base here?

    but i only play SSBB with my friends so it really never gets boring to me.
    Idk about rock band i just couldnt get into it and neither could my friends. We prefer guitar hero.

I loved Smash Bro's in the past (none / 0)

as well as Small Arms (yeaa!!!)
So when I eventually get a Wii this will be a buy for me I think. Most of the Wii game's I'll get I'll be looking to play for an hour at a time (at the most) anyway...
So we'll see! I do know this game is a huge hit here at college...

  that as well until I starting playing it alot. In small bursts, it is an incredible game, but playing for a long time will really make the game feel stale.

    you button mash you actually wont win. as long as you know how to use your shield, button mashers are not a threat.

I really never got it. I had the original and had fun for a while. I hate the Wii controls also even if you use the controller sideways with out the nunchuk. Not my bag of tea but I know many love it. I guess its a good game to get people playing video games.

      But seriously, the game is tons of fun, unless you play with a dickhead friend who uses Lather, Rinse, Repeat combo all the time (Yes, I'm looking at you, Pikachu).

the game can only be handled in limited amounts and with friends. My friend beat the entire single player and dominates us, just like in the review. This game feels like SSBM but with more characters. A good game but I wouldn't call it a sequel

Hey, papi, I got this one for my boys (none / 0)

about a month before it was even released here. They did enjoy it very much and would still be playing it if it weren't for Halo 3 and now Mario Kart Wii. I myself can hardly be in the same room, except that I love to hear them laughing and yelling.
I think that Yahtzee is mistaken in his button mashing theory and is more correct when he mentioned those that get really good, but then can't find a fun match because no one else is as good. With the exception of maybe a little character unbalance (Pikachu seems to get criticized alot), this is a game where, had Yahtzee gone online to try it he would have discovered almost immediately, you CAN get good and it isn't just all about button mashing. That became EXTREMELY clear when my boys repeatedly got their butts handed to them by, what we with great laughter assumed was a 30 year-old, single Otaku (Japanese shy-boy geek).

love this game. I think it's great solo, but incredible with friends (though I've played solo for no more than half an hour). Button mashers will NOT win, ever. There is no doubt about it. At a glance, it is difficult to understand the "complexity" of Brawl, but once you get to playing it (or any of the SSB games for that matter), it is evident that there is much more than meets the eye gameplay-wise. This game most definitely deserves stellar reviews.

I'm feeling California and looking Minnesota.

Running off the fumes of its predecessor... (none / 0)

Like the Halo, Ghost Recon, and Splinter Cell series.
There's a point where series go stale. That's hwne it's time to hang it up or do something entirely different.
Look at the CoD series. Look at TF2. Something different.
I understand the need to not alienate the fans, but you have to do some new things.
Always a fine line.

  lots of new ideas. Finishing moves, first in series to have online, custom maps, and the way characters like Sonic and Solid Snake play.
  The jump from Melee to Brawl is actually a lot bigger than people are giving it credit for (have you guys played the older ones AND this one?).
  And at that, who says fan service is bad? I would be pissed if they tried something really new and failed.
