Getting Back to da Basics (FFF)

Sat Apr 26, 2008 at 04:51:05 AM EST

I can't tell you guys how much fun we had in JohnE's room during this week's FFF.  We took a vote & the majority decided to stick with the default setup.  There weren't power weapons every five feet anymore.  Boomshot rockets, sniper shots, and torque arrows were no longer criss-crossing each other throughout the maps.  Instead, the stop and pop gameplay was evident throughout the night.  Battles for the power weapons required solid teamwork in order to be victorious.  The battles were going back and forth with the attitudes in check.  It was definitely positive for the majority of our FFF with tons of laughter, stories, and heckling.  The room was ecstatic about how great it was that the battles essentially boiled down to face-to-face confrontations instead of resorting to specialty weapons.

I had several roadie run shottie kills which caused Machete to eventually start handing me my ass.  Unfortunately, Degrees was the primary victim of my shotgun.  Sorry bro, but that's how we "Bring da heat!"(according to the rallying cry of BAB). ;)  We all made a concentrated effort to keep the torque bow out of Machete's hands on every map that had that weapon, but he still had his share of bow kills regardless of what we did.  Machete started playing the theme music to "The Benny Hill Show" and I made the suggestion that it would be the perfect intro song for the "I Claim Shenanigans" podcast. Every time that Machete's team would win, he cued up that song. Hilarious! We were rolling with stories of our childhood because that music and show took us back to when we were kids. Really Doe was ridiculous and bulletproof as usual.  There was one game on Fuel Depot that Really Doe had 368 points (14 kills, 6 downs) & he was playing off-host.  Unfreaking believable.  3Suns handed all four of us our asses on one particular game in Canals.  I started calling out for him to end on a high note and call it a night.  LOL  As far as I'm concerned, Suns should make the shottie his primary weapon because his skill with it grows exponentially every week.  He was breaking bitches off!  LOL  Razor Hanzo joined us for the entire FFF and was forbidden by JohnE from grabbing anything that went boom.  I'll let you guys imagine why.  LOL  There was one game on Process when JohnE downed Really Doe and Razor was hopping over to curbstomp him.  I called it out to everyone that was spectating, "Watch Razor f*ck this up."  Sure enough, Doe started to rise & headshot Razor on the way up.  After that, he blasted JohnE in half and the room burst out in raucous laughter.  Razor was having a lot of success at what my Lan-crew calls "The Ricky." We had this one guy in our group that was completely heinous. All he did was aim with the shottie and if you were killed by him, it was excruciatingly painful. We guessed that if you're constantly aiming your shottie, you're bound to get a few kills. Razor had a lot of success throughout the night with "The Ricky" until he came up against Really Doe. ;) On one game on Bullet Marsh, JohnE got a no scope headshot on Suns & when we headed back to the lobby; JohnE claimed that it was luck.  As the map cycled, Suns mumbled out nonchalantly, "I wish I were that lucky."  The entire room burst out with laughter again.  Man, THIS is what FFFs are made of!  Getting back to our roots and taking a break from COD 4 & Halo 3 is definitely refreshing.  I guess that Gears may just have to be moved back to the backburner once again since GTA 4 is releasing in time for next week's FFF.  Yeah, shenanigans still exist, but when you're with good people; you make the most of your time.  BigScott and Robbins were part of the room during the early hours of FFF & broke off to either call it a night or join up in Papi's room.  Obijuan, Kenai, and Zoso joined up later on during the night after Papi's room shut down.  Obi was grenade tagging more than usual & Kenai got some ridiculous double downs with the Boomshot.  Zos got in at the very tail end of the night & dished out some pain before we signed off.  Absolutely everyone agreed that the default weapon set-up was the way to go in our future FFFs with friendly-fire on & 10 seconds down.  At one time, there were three Gearhead rooms going.  How did it go in Papi's room because we had an absolute blast in JohnE's!

  •  First! ha ha What a blast! (none / 0)

The most memorable moment for me was in Garden, when Kenai went for the sole Boom and the remaining seven of us went toe-to-toe at the bottom of the steps - their side against ours (I kid you not, it was like something out of an old western, or 60's musical).  Funny thing is that somehow, even with friendly fire on, and shooting directly into the crowd, Kenai missed with the Boom - not a single kill!  :D  He made up for it though by carrying our team through the Escalation match with at least 12 kills, while the rest of us were under 5 - I think I had 2...if I was lucky. ;).  Really Doe did something similar but with an even greater spread at the beginning of the night, and if I am not mistaken, it was also on Escalation.  14+ kills!

ObiJuan had his "Sunscreen" on, as I coined it, and all twice times that I managed to kill him (or so it felt), there was great rejoicing: beers were poured, and women placed on our laps!

However, I was the "Anti-Doe" - as I knighted myself proudly. I think there was one time that Really saw me coming and I could swear, he ran the other direction.  ha ha ha  That isn't to say that he didn't still hand me my ass 5 times out of 6 - but he did so, knowing full well that he was playing Russian Roulette with 5:1 odds of survival.  Hmm...come to think of it, that time he appeared to run away, Kenai was probably standing tall behind me tapping the Boom and gesturing where Really should go, where he could go...if you know what I mean.  <3 Really!  You were absolutely awesome all night!

Machete...ah Machete!  Knowing that he is on the other team, and that there is a torque bow sitting unguarded on the map, strikes sheer terror into my heart. I did my best, at the cost of unity and comradery to my team, to keep him from getting it. I think I managed to slow him down a little (much like ants on the sidewalk might distract a 2-year-old), but we still lost miserably on Mausoleum.

There were friendly fire kills galore, and the most amazing shifts in momentum throughout the evening.  It is incredible, how much the map and teammates affect individual performance.  Zoso was definitely my charm, for with his entrance to our room, my kills doubled and more - I almost broke 5 in one match I think.  ;)  ha ha ha

Shenanigans and good people, that is what FFF are all about!  Thanks everyone!

    •  Great night! (none / 0)

I'll post other thoughts further down.

      But...

Garden.  I didn't miss with the boom.  You were just all already down. :-)  Thats why my boom didn't kill anyone.  Proceeded to shotgun someone, then finished off the other two with curb stomps.  LOL

Escallation.  Great way to end the night.  one round got two together with grenades.  And since this never happens (me leading a match) I remember 14 kills!  :-)   The last round, I don't know how Blank didn't kill me with the shotty.  But, I guess it was my match.  Sheninigans!

  •  We had a blast as well (none / 0)

I used my normal weapon swaps but I also added in a bunch of maps that I'd removed from the rotation just to mix things up.

You know the funny thing about the weapon swaps is that I had my best games on maps where the weapon swap didn't affect anything.  Like Subway where I seemed to destroy the other team.  One particular moment was popping out of a corner and sawing Robbins when he didn't expect it, taking the boom he'd picked up and destroying the last guy.  Not sure I remember who it was.

But without a doubt my favorite moment of the night was watching Kenai cross the tracks on Tyro Station, and then timing it perfectly so I met him when he was trying to climb up to avoid the train.  I used my shottie on him, backed him up and next thing I know the oncoming train took him out.  I basically forced him into the train.  I was practicing developing my skills with the torque bow and had five kills on Tyro Station with it.  I'm trying to make my skills better before Gears 2 comes out.

I also had two unfortunate team kills.  One was on Fuel Depot when Grymm was charging Robbins.  I tried to arc the boom over robbins to him the oncoming grymm, but instead it clipped robbins in the head and blew him to bits.  I apologize profusely for my stupidity in not arcing it higher.  And I also blew Grymm up as both he and ChrisB were trying to kill Kenai on Mausoleum.  All three were by the torque and I sent the boom into the fray hoping to blow up all three FTW.  Instead it just blew Grymm into little bitty pieces.  Damn!

Zoso had a ridiculous headshot through some smoke that was just ungodly and Robbins took my head off when I was in the middle of a roll...again.  I don't know how he even thinks to aim so low.

I actually asked my bro about the weapon swaps  and he said to me that he thinks weapon swapping is perfectly fine because Epic made the ability to do it for a reason.

I had a ton of fun, but I do think some of the guys were getting frustrated with Gears and the shenanigans it hath wrought so I'll be glad to get to GTA IV MP next week.  I just hope the lag and shenanigans don't exist.  I know a few folks told me the lag in JohnE's room was bad.

    •  You know (none / 0)

the other thing, and I was thinking about this, is that the weapon swaps I usually do only affect three maps, Gridlock, Fuel Depot and Mansion.  The rest are not affected.  That's only 3 maps out of many.

Tyro Station, Old Bones, Canals, War Machine, Garden, Bullet Marsh, Mausoleum, Subway, Clocktower are all the same (I don't have Escalation, Raven Down or Rooftops in the rotation).  And I think that the weapon swaps actually improve those three maps because it makes it so not everyone immediately goes for the sniper on Gridlock, Fuel Depot has a ton of cover and flank opportunities that the boom can be taken out and Mansion is pretty lame without it.

I relented on friendly fire even though I don't really like it on at all.  Are you guys going to make me relent on this too for three maps?

      •  I (none / 0)

really think the weapon swaps you do are really good.. It makes the game different and like you said on Gridlock everyone isn't just trying to get the sniper.  As with mansion, having the hammerburst swapped is a great idea.  With all the shenanigans of the boom anyway it's not so bad having booms buzzing by your head.  Some of those last night were going right through people, that's why on Gridlock I just stood there and let you take me out because it hit me head on.  It was a awesome night as usual, we never did get a full room, I sent out a ton of invites with no responses :(  Blankman sounds like you guys had a blast as well, I never did get in with you or Suns last night.  As for GTA4 I have to do some trading in order to be able to get it, but I must get this game !!
        •  Thanks for the invites, Chris (none / 0)

and thanks to everyone else as well.  I was trying to keep tabs on the rooms, hoping that every room was at least even, if not full.  At one point, I jumped into Kenai's room, but that made it 3 on 2 was was far worse than the lonely 2 on 2, so I jumped back out.  After that, I just stayed put.

Thanks again for the invites, everyone!

    •  It wasn't the lag that was bad... (none / 0)

Rather the host advantage was there in spades.  JohnE resorted to using the Boltok on several maps where he was able to get a few headshots with it.  Everyone hates the host Lancer/shottie, but there's really no way around it because that aspect is broken.

I don't think that we're forcing any host to relent on weapon swapping, Papi.  What we were noticing last night was that the really good maps like Fuel Depot, Gridlock, and Mansion didn't have a ton of power weapons (when we went with the default set-up) which makes them essentially quick kill games.  It was just great fun to have face-to-face battles & even tighter teamwork in order to get those weapons.

      I'm a Gears Fluffer!!! Wooohhh!!!

Dont feel sorry about the boom on Fuel Depot, papi! If anything, I was happy you did that because it gave me quite a laugh :P If that would've been a sniper shot, my head would've been sniped clean off! lol

  •  what a blast (none / 0)

blank had my number last nite, suns and i would trade off killing each other as well
the momentum shifts were incredible, the teams we evenly matched throughout
swaps or not it really doesnt bother me
although i do agree default does make for more shottie to shottie , the kills were for the most part evenly dispersed on both teams, with some exceptions like doe going off on depot
all in all the level of excitement was very strong

    grade for the evening//   a+

  •  An EPIC night!! (none / 0)

Since we'll be playing GTA4 for the next few FFF, It was a Great night for GEARS!

At one point we had 3 full rooms!  Well, at least 6 in each.

My room earlier was Tyrus (very cool guy) who I've never played with before.  Hope he keeps coming.
Major Dan was back in the mix with a friend (konzo or something) playing split screen.  Windowlicker, Grymm and Zoso.  It took a little while to shift guys around to have nonlopsided matches, but once we did, the competition was awesome!

Later, played with Papi.  Loved it!  Just trying not to get my head popped by Abe and Robbins!  Not an easy task.

Then later, JohnE's room.  Usually, I'm tired by then (2am), but there was so much energy in that room that I could still "Bring the Pain", that is when I'm not getting my head popped off by Really Doe or Torque bowed by JohnE or for that matter, Run over by Blankman.

As in the words of our resident Sage (ESuns)  "Good Times"!!

    See yall soon,

    Kenai signing out!

  •  I definitely (none / 0)

had some of the most and least fun in gears last night. Due to JohnE hosting, Blank essentially had host advantage and I literally counted about 20 rounds in a row without him using a SINGLE piece of cover. I literally broke a controller out of frustration (and I have never gotten THAT pissed) of my bullets going straight through him and having him roadie run shotty me.
Other than those few rounds in a row of absolutely no strategy ;) it was probably my favorite FFF in months. My torque was working for a few maps pretty well (especially bullet marsh) and having Blank in the room pretty much guarantees a good time. Really Doe was doing phenomenal and had 15 kills on Mansion.
I do agree with Blank about the weapon swaps though. It really seems to make everyone try to survive with just their spawn guns, and have to risk their ass to get a boom. I really don't think a boom should just be handed to a team from the get go with no confrontation, and I feel that the maps were balance to have Hammerburts (which is actually a very good gun) where they should be. The only gun that should really be swapped IMO is the hammer of dawn for boom. The gun is just beyond broken to me and it makes alot of sense having a boom where it is on most maps.
  •  I have to say (none / 0)

I go for default setups and a lot of people here like the weapon swaps like the hammerburst for torque or whatever but it has been a while since a lot of us have played with default so it is definitely a nice changeup. A lot of people always switch out the hammerburst too but after using it multiple people(myself include)say the hammerburst is stronger than the lancer.

get a chance to play with the late night crew and thats my bad.  I layed down with the lady for a bit as she went to bed, low and behold I passed right the fuck out.  I was really looking forward to some late night/early morning gaming with you guys but I did get my 3 matches in.  It was fun watching Zos' girl run around with the chainsaw and listening to Zos on his mic saying "B, B, hit the red button!"
