Gears of War 2 GamePlay/FFF Recap's

Sat May 10, 2008 at 11:51:58 AM EST

It was anything but quiet last night at our weekly Friday Night Fragfest as the Gears 2 footage stole the show.  GTA4? No. Perhaps some Halo 3 No way. And don't even mention COD4...the GearHeads were all about Gears of War last night and our playtime showed it.  We had some great matches throughout the night although I can't honestly remember much of what happened as I am still processing how awesome the Gears 2 gameplay was.

There were some minor things that I didn't love about the gameplay video (Chainsaw dueling looks like cheap button mashing and the animation didn't look very good at all)but both of those could be fixed with actual play time and the further development of the game.

But seriously in the scheme of all the awesome things in the video I can't complain at all.  Locusts shields, snapping thier necks, new Chainsaw annimation, battles that aren't the size of a McDonalds playplace...

If Gears 2 lives up to that video I'm seriously wondering how GTA 4 could come close to topping it for Game of the Year.

But what did you think?

  •  Some thoughts (none / 0)

So, I already mentioned this to Zoso last night, but I just want to share one point about the footage we saw yesterday.  That is, the entire show was on rails, and that realization blew my mind.  See, I cannot imagine any other situation (game) where showing something as fundamentally basic as the rail shooter mechanic, albeit incredibly souped up and with platformer elements, would garner anything other than, "Didn't we finish with that sometime before Doom, or Castle Wolfenstein?"  And you know what, that would be right.  What we saw is basically the essense of Galaga, or name your favorite 70's-80's arcade game here, translated into 21st century gaming.  It is reach-over-and-grab-your-nut-sack, I'm-gonna-squeeze-as-hard-as-I-can-and-I-won't-ley-go-until-you-give-me-all-the-quarters-in-your-poc ket gaming.  Of course, it isn't limited to that, but that is one of the prominent qualities of the video (and of the original game).

The campaign for Gears is by most standards short, but from the very first scene, it is play-to-the-end, and with incredible replayability.  So far, it would appear that what I loved about Gears 1 is fully intact in Gears 2, but now the weapons are more powerful and with more features, there are new maneuvers, it is prettier, smoother, at least a factor of 10 bigger, and denser in scale, and it is even more cinematic than the first game.  Really, in my personal history of entertainment enjoyment, it looks to be as big an event as Aliens was. Gears 1 was Alien, Gears 2 is Aliens.

I am runnin' naked to that glistening surf, and I can't see a boat, let alone a tanker run aground, anywhere in sight.

By the way, Zos, Boxin, and Grymm, all brought their "I'm hyped" game last night.  I was host, and I almost never got a second shot at takin' them out, and when I did, I still got beat.  I just love it when these guys decide that they are going to turn it on.  Oh my, watch out!

  •  Pumped up & button mashing... (none / 0)

The guys in my room were all talking about the mashing of the B-button for the chainsaw dueling and it's pretty much what it has to be.  Using another scheme such as random combos that flash on the screen would just take away from the intensity & focus of the action.  Since it's rumored that other players can interrupt the dueling of two players, it makes that button-mashing mechanic fit even more.

I wish that Papi hadn't signed off last night because I'm sure everyone would have wanted to get his take on the gameplay reveal.  GTA 4 didn't even stand a chance for our FFF-game last night.  Not a chance at all.  In fact, I suggested that we bounce on over to GTA 4 because we could use it as a 16-player lobby to talk about the Gears 2 gameplay.  However, I was shot down because some of the guys stated that the enthusiasm from everyone would have been made it too difficult to talk in an orderly fashion.  Regardless, all of us couldn't wait to talk it over with our fellow Gearheads.

Hypnos (Joeycorpse) put it best when he stated that it was great to be talking about a game with so many fanboys in the room because there's barely anything negative that was said.  Hahaha.

    •  I stayed on until (none / 0)

a little after 10 and when no invites were forthcoming, I decided to fire up my PS3.  I played the Haze demo and Warhawk for the first time.  Warhawk was actually pretty damn fun.  They have dedicated servers and you can choose to go into the newbie server and play against folks as green as you.  The animations are kind of lame and the Warhawks aren't that easy to get kills with (I used the rocket launcher almost exclusively and went on a rampage with it).  But I actually really enjoyed it and think I'm going to play some more.

You guys all caught me off guard by being on Gears last night.  I immediately fired up GTA assuming that was what Machete was sending me an invite to play and by the time I realized it wasn't, the room was full.  I really can't stand the limit on the number of people in a game.  We almost always seem to have too many for one room and too few for two rooms.

As for what I think of the Gears 2 footage, I'll share that soon enough ;-)

      •  Yeah, papi, I was driving around in (none / 0)

Liberty City with my nephew, and then by the time I set up a Gears room, you were gone.  Missed opportunity.  Too bad. :(

  •  The footage (none / 0)

blew away my expecations. I would agree with you Sweets on the chainsaw duel kind of cheap but will probably give us all some good laughs in a multiplayer match. I think it's shaping up to be a amazing experience. The executions are crazy!! I can't wait to snap a locust neck. I hope the game is longer and delivers on the story.
  •  Dude!!! HE SNAPPED HIS EFFIN' NECK!!!!! (none / 0)

I CAN NOT believe what I watched last night. The 50+mins of waiting for the video to load was well worth it once I finally got to see that damned Locust fall to the ground with a broken Neck. And as I was saying last night, the Mashing would be sooooo much more intense than getting Downed right in front of an enemy that went down along with you - and that gets pretty freaking intense in itself! But, while you're mashing the B button, just to have you're finger slip off the controller while you're frantically moving you hand up and down and in turn losing the battle. Ahhhh, I can see it now. CAN... NOT... WAIT!!!!

I've been wanting to share this video with you guys for sooooo long. Now I have to wait until I get to share some MP goodies with you all. grrrrrr :)
  •  As I said above, (none / 0)

this footage REALLY impressed me....It blew my expectations out of the water.

I told papi I'm glad Gears 2 is coming out because that's the one thing everyone agree on =)

  •  well (none / 0)

"Chainsaw dueling looks like cheap button mashing and the animation didn't look very good at all"

Chainsaw dueling should ONLY be button mashing imo. I seriously LOVE when two people are down and they fight to hit a quicker to get up... thats the best.

And what was wrong with the animation? lol

    •  As I think Tyler will say (none / 0)

the Animation looked really early and well...I won't steal his thunder =)

As for the button mashing, I just think it would be cool to actually fight each other some how.

After you are engaged you push X to swing the chainsaw to the left, B to Swing Right, Y to bring it down like a hammer and A to swing it up. The opponent then counters accordingly quickly getting a "Y!" or "B!" prompt....to defend and counter.

Just an idea. 3Suns and others had a similar idea I think last night where you press a sequence that you could memorize

Why always pick out the things you disagree with in my posts? =P

      •  Yeah (none / 0)

we all have to remember it is a early build, but still looks better than most games out right now, which is ridiculous :)  Good write up Sweety :)
      •  The chainsaw (none / 0)

animation just didn't feel...the same. The one thing that I noticed was that Marcus wasn't "wrapped up" when chainsawing the locust. In gears 1 everything kind of stops and zooms in real close to the chainsaw, in this video it seemed like he could still have moved and what not...and it didn't look AS good as I think it will... It is only their first video and it is only my opinion...

I really liked the nail gun but I am worried about how it will work in multiplayer...it seemed pretty powerful. Also, in multiplayer will players be able to pick up downed enemies? and will those enemies have any chance of getting out of the stranglehold? Just my thoughts...

        •  the "nail gun" (none / 0)

is actually the retooled hammerburst, so it might actually be a decent alternative to the Lancer.
          •  naw (none / 0)

            the pistol thingy.......
            •  Compared (none / 0)

to the Boltok, it is pretty even from the looks of it. Plus, you only get four bursts to a clip.
              •  yea (none / 0)

but with 6 bullets per burst, thats 24 bullets. Thats a lot better than the Boltok, which isnt that great to begin with..
                •  Are you kidding me? (none / 0)

You can down someone SOOO easily with the Boltok.

I still dont think its good. If you can get headshots with it, thats fine, but other than that stick to the shotty.
                    •  I don't think you really (none / 0)

understood what I said - even with it's six-round limit, you can still easily down someone charging you. I wouldn't call that a weapon that's not 'good.'

                      •  No, I understood you (none / 0)

I just didnt really word my sentence right. The only reasons I think the Boltok should be used are when you're either: A.) out of ammo in every gun you have, so you're limited to pistols, and/or B.) If you can get headshots with it since its 2 shots and they're decapitated. I dont think a pistol should be used just to down someone, and since you cant get a headshot with the Gorgon Burst pistol, I guess the six-round burst would sort of even it out. I still prefer the COG pistol (forgot the name) over the Boltok since it's quicker.
                        •  Isn't (none / 0)

it called the Snub pistol, I could be wrong..
                        •  I wasn't saying (none / 0)

that a Pistol should be used to down someone, I was just saying that since it can do that as a Pistol that it's an efficient weapon.

If Epic does decide to bring over the human/Locust shield option over to multiplayer, a lot of people are going to get some serious pistol action going!  If they do bring over the shield option, I wonder if the hostage taker can get chainsawed from the back while holding the hostage?  I hope that they can.  Damn, November is going to be excruciating.  However, there's going to be more info from now until then.  More gameplay vids, screenshots, & written info.  Damn, I feel like one of Pavlov's dogs salivating every time Gears 2 is mentioned.

of the night (Saturday night for you guys) just put me over the top.  I had SO MUCH FUN!  And that is the way it is every time I play that frickin' game.  I cannot believe it.  I am just going nuts over this thing.

I sincerely hope they put out a Gears 2 Special Edition 3f_ckin'60, because I want one.  We need at least 2 more of those piece-'o-shit consoles in our house, and I would love for one of them to be shiny black like the GTA4 Edition, with a big red bloody cog skull on the side.

The time has come.  I have found my ONE game.  Seriously, even Gears 1 is giving me so much fun, I don't need another, but Gears 2 !?!  I feel like my body is going to start floating up and whirling around the room like in Logan's Run.  Someone grab my feet and hold me down before I fly up too high and I pop like a balloon!

PST, co-op campaign with Sweety, & some more multiplayer on Sunday).  A bit obsessive, huh?  LOL  I can't wait for the barrage of new info that will be coming out until the game releases!  EGM's next issue is supposed to feature Gears 2.  I'm a firm supporter of print media.  Hey, you gotta have some bathroom reading material! ;)  Damn, I envy Papi & Dave for their insider info about the game.  It's times like these that you wish you were "the fly on the wall."  Wooohhh!!!

each burst looks like it does only a little more damage than a boltok bullet (keep in mind he is definitely playing on casual). So in the end, it seems pretty balanced.
    •  I (none / 0)

totally agree with what was said above :)  Coming from one of the Chainsaw maniacs I think it will be awesome.  What was wrong with  the animation??  seriously?
      •  Honestly (none / 0)

My major issue with is was that the saw looking like it was a butcher's knife cutting through soft butter.  What I loved about the original saw animation was that it looked like the guy was having a hard time pushing the saw through the meat, cartilage and bones.  This looked more like using a ninja blade.
        •  I (none / 0)

don't feel this will be the FINAL animation that makes it into the game that ships, still looks freaking sweet :)
        •  well the problem (none / 0)

is that in GOW right now, the chainsaw barely even hits them lol. Its floats above shooting blood. In this footage, the blade cuts through the flesh! And i honestly prefer the way it looks now, though i think it will change to more like the original by launch. As gearschris said, this is early build.

          •  I am with Zoso on the saw (none / 0)

Gentlemen, this isn't Teak wood we are cutting through here - this is biological flesh.  If you want to carry the chainsaw analogy at all, it HAS to be fast and without resistance, especially when he comes down from the exposed neck area.  I was tremendously pleased with the head and left shoulder just sliding off the body like that.  Absolutely the way it has to be done.

As for the single button mashing, I am warming up to the idea.  I have thought about it a lot (since I thought about the right stick idea) and there is no doubt that if people actually do the mashing (do some people not participate in the revive mash-off?) mashing B will be more blood-pressure-raising intense than doing some sort of combinations of right-joystick movements.  The intensity will be there if people will not just give up, and sometimes you have to choose the most fun/intense over best analogy/realism.  That is what I credit Cliffy and his team for in my post above.  They REALLY have good decision making.

        •  I agree with the button-mashing... (none / 0)

being simplistic and straightforward because it has to maintain the focus on action.  The ease of the slicing through the body (animation) is very minor imo.

  •  In-depth Analysis of Gears 2 Gameplay (none / 0)

Bear with my geekiness because I wrote this up when the wife was asleep.  Hahaha.

*Trees are run through & splintered in real-time.
*Nemacyst mortars actually spread their tentacles & dive bomb toward vehicles (takes out the King Raven & Derrick).
*Sidearms are now shown on COG thighs instead of magically appearing (Gorgon Burst pistol on Marcus' high).  Gorgon Burst Pistol has six-five round burst shots in each clip.
*Flocking tech of Unreal Engine 3.5 is shown, but the reticule doesn't turn red which might indicate that the multitude of enemies are window dressing.  Also, several Boomers are interspersed among Drones.
*The Lancer has a longer barrel that extends a bit farther than the chainsaw attachment, blue targeting cross-hair on the iron sights, new muzzle flashes, and firing sound effects.  Also, new active-reload HUD display animation were seen for the Lancer and Hammerburst
*Retooled Hammerburst sounds beefier and has the ability for semi-automatic.  It now has a barrel extension.
*No weapon melees were shown except for the chainsawing.
*When using the left trigger aim feature, the perspective is tighter than in Gears 1.  Peripheral vision is now decreased much more than originally.
*Locust were boarding the Derricks by use of grappling hooks.
*New COG tank vehicle is seen shooting a Brumak in the face.
*Option to use a downed enemy as a shield is available by hitting the A-button. Ability to break the neck of the shield victim was shown.  The X-button was used for curbstomping & reviving your teammates.  No curbstomp button tool tip was shown.
*COG "redshirts" have a minor redesigned helmet & to have a beefier build.
*Chainsaw kills (flipping of the Lancer) seemed much faster than the regular animation in Gears 2.  Perhaps the speed of the kill allows the player or enemy to react faster.  Formerly, the attacker was "immune" to attacks during the chainsaw animation.  Possible reason why this is now sped up.  B-button mashing tool tip was displayed.
Chainsaw dueling was interrupted by Marcus as the Locust was dueling with a COG "redshirt" (Dom was seen fighting next to the "redshirt").
*No weapon pickups or drops were shown when the enemies were killed.
*More vibrant colors are evident throughout the gameplay reveal.

was just thinking of something.  When Marcus shoots the Locust down and goes over to pick him up you can see that the A button comes up to pick him up to use as a shield, what about the curb stomp??
