Update on the New Gearheads of War

I've been extremely busy over the past little while but I've made time to look into the upgrading of Gearheads of War.  It looks like we're going to be able to at least make some of the functionality changes sooner rather than later.

Here are some of the things I plan on adding:

  • Recommended diaries:  This will simply require you guys to vote on a good diary so it appears above the other diaries.  I'm hoping this encourages really thoughtful, detailed diaries.

  •  Auto-refreshing comments:  This will make it so that if you're on a page that new comments will appear on their own without you having to do anything.  These types of comments work really well, but they usually kill a blog's page views which could hurt advertising in turn.  But I'm willing to do it to try and improve the experience for the Gearheads.

  •  I'm also hoping to add something else to the sidebar that will allow for much easier ability to post YouTube and GameVideos-type of embedded videos.

Finally, and here's the big thing, I'm going to pay a designer to rework the look/feel of Gearheads.  It will still have the same functionality and a few new ones but it will have a whole new look.

I'm going to need to start collecting the donations that people promised starting next week as I'm aiming to have the new look up by the end of May.  I'm hoping people can send paypal payments because that will probably be the easiest way to pay the designer.

Thanks in advance to all the Gearheads.  I hope you'll like the upgrades.

This sounds great. I can't promise anything but I'll take a second look at my budget.

If you want a good designer...

I can give  you contact information for my buddies over at Newspail. My buddy, Gary Williams, runs that community site (nothing more than forums at the moment). But Gary and another pal of mine formed a company, Logic Bomb Media, that does web design and all sorts of odds and ends. They're very down to earth and would give ya good numbers and/or advice.

Check out their site:

Those of you who followed Halo and

read Bungie's updates from years back, may remember Frankie mentioning a fellow named Dolbex who taped a timer to his controller so that he would know when the weapons respawned.

Gary Williams, aka dolbex, co-founder of LogicBombMedia (also creator of NewsPail, which is undergoing a major reworking) has incredible web kung fu.  Art design, databases, varieties of flash, you name it - really attractive and elegant stuff.

I never mentioned LBM before because I know that papi has people all lined up (I think it is the same people who created the current Gearheads site that we use in addition to his professional work as well - right?).

Anyway, yes, if anyone is looking to have a site designed, do check out LogicBombMedia.  Their home site is one of the most creative sites out there, and is just a sample of what they can do.

Here is a link to a write-up over at HBO about one of his LANbex parties.

BTW, as you can probably gather, especially from the LANbex article, he is an incredibly nice guy.

D'oh, that one Bungie Weekly Update

gives mention of dolbex, but isn't the one in which Frankie talks about his hardcore skillz. ;)  Anyway, the world is a small place filled with great people.  That is the conclusion of the matter.
