Me and My ADD

Wed May 07, 2008 at 06:50:57 PM EST

So I don't really have ADD.  It's more just the kind of thing that everyone seems to have that has grown up in the MTV generation.

Why am I writing about this? Simple.  I haven't been able to get into GTA IV just yet.  Before you go grabbing the pitchforks and the torches and get ready to show up at my front door to tar and feather me, I'll just say that I'm not qualified to say much about GTA IV simply because I've probably only played about six percent or so of the game.  I haven't even got to a point where I have a firearm yet.  Life has just been really busy lately and combine that with the fact that my daughter was sick Monday and Tuesday, it's meant really very little time where I could play GTA.

But my initial impressions of the game has so far been, "What's the big deal, it's another GTA?"  Like I said, you have to take what I say with a grain of salt so far just because I'm not very far into the game, but they've basically taken the concept of all the GTA's of the past and refined them, given them a nicer polish and put them on the new platforms.

Don't get me wrong, I've loved GTA games in the past but I've never finished one.  Part of my issue with the games of the past has always been control and I don't find that much has changed in GTA IV, at least in terms of control over the main character and the vehicles.  I wound up talking with Zoso about this over AIM and his reply to me was, "Just wait until you get like five hours in.  It really gets great."

That's all well and good, but I have a wife and a daughter and a full-time job.  I need my games to grab me by the balls immediately and not let go.  People can continue to criticize Gears of War for the lacking story, but that was a game that seized you by the gonads and didn't let go.  Call of Duty 4 was the same way.  I don't know whether it's because I have ADD or whatnot, but I have little patience for games these days that don't immediately give you some action.  The story could get remarkable down the road, but I'm just not the kind of gamer who loves to "put the time in."  I remember Shane Bettenhausen once saying about Zelda: Twilight Princess that the game got awesome after the first couple of dungeons.  I just don't have the time to wait for games to get awesome.  Design a freaking game that grabs me from the beginning.  I mean, you don't typically say, "Hell if you sit through the first crappy hour and a half of this movie, the last hour is just amazing!"

Like I said, take my criticism of GTA with a grain of salt.  I haven't played multi-player yet and I've barely scratched the surface of the single-player.  But I don't see why people are dropping such remarkable scores on it yet.

By the way, I know a lot of you guys like Yahtzee. Check out his blast back at some of the Nintendo fanboys out there.  It's a thing of pure beauty.

  •  I love it when games grab me by the balls! (none / 0)

As for my impressions so far, I simply haven't completed enough of the single player to qualify to say anything about it, except that GTA is seriously a role playing game. I find I am worried about whether I changed clothes (do I stink?), or keeping my commitments to that deadbeat cousin, etc. etc. I am not saying that is a bad thing, just more role playing than I thought. Like you, papi, I simply cannot put in the hours.

I was all hot and bothered about this game for a couple of reasons:

    1. the city being inspired by New York - I've never been to New York, but the thought that I can "learn" a little about it through a game is very cool. I think R* fulfilled on this promise. It is amazing.
    2. the technology, specifically NaturalMotion. I am actually a little disappointed so far because everything I have seen could have been done by pre-set animations. However, I think the more I see of the game, the more the beauty of procedural animation will become evident (not always seeing the same animation over and over again). Still, controlling Niko seems a little sluggish and unresponsive. I think they need to turn up the speed of NaturalMotion, if you know what I mean.
    3. The driving. The more I drive, the more I like it. Also, the more familiar I become with the streets and the neighborhood, the more I enjoy being in it.
    4. The phone. I like it and I like the music and radio and commercials. For me, that is far more important than pretty pictures. I have been bitching about pretty over innovation for a long time. It would be grossly hypocritical of me to complain now that it is not as pretty as it might be for the sake of content. One complaint about the phone, why do I use it to change the stations (do I?) when I am in the car, yet, I cannot use it to listen to music when I am walking. That analogy seems broken. (I will have to confirm that I am using the phone to change the music station - if that is the case, they screwed that up).

From the beginning, I never really thought I would be playing the SP, so I am not disappointed. Even the multiplayer was a big question for me. What I bought this game for, was to be able to drive around Liberty City and listen to tunes and maybe have a friend ride shotgun. Basically a chat room, with things to do. I am not disappointed, though in the end, I may spend more time chatting in the Gears Valley of Death, than in Liberty City.

You know, there is one multiplayer mode that I wish they would add: Follow the Leader.

It would have one guy start as the leader and the others have to follow him. No set course. Whoever is able to pass him becomes the new leader. The clock keeps track of who is in the lead, and for how long. At the end of the set time, the person with the longest time as leader wins. Very simple and just a variation of Oddball, but I think it would be a blast, and it would allow for people to see the big wipeouts. As it is, we often miss the good stuff because it happens out of sight.

Anyway, great diary, papi.  I think tyrus would agree wholeheartedly with you.  Almost word for word what he has been saying.

    Gears is my porn.

    •  Excellent comment, Suns (none / 0)

I'm not going to start hating on a game when I've barely scratched the surface, but there's a reason I never finished any of the other GTAs.  They aren't designed for excellent controls and as I proved with Mass Effect, if the controls on things stink, I'm just not going to deal with it.  I don't care how freaking fantastic a story is.
  •  If you want some ADD, (none / 0)

come to my Algebra 1 class...

Anyways, this essentially is just another GTA, but the only thing they kept the same is the fact that you can cause massive amounts of crime. The gameplay is practically completely different, the Physics and Animations are Top Notch, and the Script Writing (as I've said before) is some of the Best I've heard in a Game. The humor and the fun this game can amount too is just phenomenal.

    •  See this is where my problems (none / 0)

arise because so far it's essentially just another GTA.  I can't comment on the shooting or the story because I haven't gotten that far yet.

But I think it's unfair for people to essentially say that Halo 3 was basically "another Halo" without making a similar comment about the new GTA.

Don't get me wrong, the size and scope of this city is a technical achievement within itself and I believe that's a good part of the reason the game is scoring so high, but the criticism that people have said about Halo 3, they probably should also use with GTA IV.

  •  Overall Donations for the site just went down 80% (none / 0)

I sit somewhere between you papi in the "It's really really good, but what's the big deal" and the rest of the site ready to buy GTA 4 swim-wear.

    ;)

I've played the game close to 23 hours and I really love it. However I share some criticisms that you have Tyler.

    Here are some of mine:

-Controls. It takes several hours to get use to the driving controls, and I'm STILL trying to get the normal user controls and 'taking cover' controls down. Quite frankly I think the controls suck. (Again I'm 23 hours in so there's no more room to get use to it)

-Strip Clubs and Prostitutes. Really? Do we really need this in our games. They don't play any major role in the game and do wonders for those wanting to criticize gaming. As Jeff Greene said on the 1UP Show these are pointless features in GTA4. IMO it is stupid to put them in.

-Then there are about a thousands nuances...
-Walking out of a building and it looking like its night, then suddenly the lighting corrects itself and it's day.
-Flying past a cop smashing every car other than him and him just sitting there. (As well as accidentally barely touching him and having him freak)
-Friendly AI. On a particular mission I'm running from dozens of cop cars and my AI buddies aren't even shooting out of the window even though I'm getting pummeled. WTF?

So there are some of my complaints about the game. However as I said I've played almost 23 hours so I'm not saying it's bad...just flawed.

    Positives:

+Dialogue:  Niko is hilarious as is his interactions with other characters.
+Integration: From awesome Radio to cool internet features this game criss crosses features in truly awesome ways.
+Physics. Crashing through the city and police chases are freakin' epic.
+Size. Just walking around the city is both fun and funny making you feel like you are actually in "Liberty City".

So there's my 2 cents...The game is amazing and epic but because of that, the flaws shine like diamonds. Once more I've played almost a day's worth so I love the game, but that doesn't mean I'm going to let it's flaws pass.

    •  Are you really (none / 0)

that far in the game? I thought you only played a little bit so far... Anyway, wait until you get a gun papi. There is one major cut scene towards the beginning of the game that really grabs your sack and makes you call Niko a badass. He is hands down my favorite video game character of all time now.
Also SweetTea, you have to take the flaws with a grain of salt. The game is not going to be perfect due simply to its sheer size. You really have to look at this game in the ways that it pushes the boundaries of gaming. I have never felt this much emotion in a game. When I make certain choices in story mode, I really do feel bad. Before passing judgment, I really think you guys should wait until you've gotten at least a third of the way through the campaign. I guarantee you that your perspective will change.
      •  I'm really not sure how far I am exactly.... (none / 0)

It says 36% game progress but I'm not sure if that is the story or just everything in general. That said I'm really far in the story and you are definitely right.
The story in this game really grabs you and I'm hoping papi will be pulled into that despite the crappy controls.

        And like I said...23 hours doesn't lie ;)

        •  As for taknig the flaws with a grain of salt (none / 0)

because of the sheer size of the game I have a slightly different view of it...I'd rather they take out an island and fix the controls, AI, etc then go for the hugeness. Just my opinion though
          •  That (none / 0)

is definitely understandable. I guess there comes a point where you have to decide quantity vs. quality. I think they found a pretty good mix, but I agree that the friendly AI could be a little better (then again, what friendly AI couldn't be better?).
        •  Wow, (none / 0)

I must have played ALOT then because I'm further than you :). I did play 12 hours straight last Tuesday... Also, what controls are crappy to you specifically? I have had a few problems, but nothing too bad.
          •  Just walking around....Character controls. (none / 0)

Trying to take cover and getting thrown somewhere you don't want to go, trying to climb something and having to repetedly push the button over and over, trying to walk around in general just feels distant....

Also the animation: Walking up to a door to see if you can go through it and having Niko just run into the door, Also-
Niko walking to the door of a car even though your getting shot at...I mean come on! I want Niko to recognize I'm in danger run and slide over the freakin' hood!

I actually think the controls in Assassins Creed were better....

  •  I can see where you're coming from. (none / 0)

Honestly, the controls (especially in close quarters) aren't the best.  However, I think the new shooting system works incredibly well once you get used to it.  It's not perfect though, I still occasionally get stuck on cover (in close quarters).

The game doesn't start off thrillingly, you're right.  It tries to introduce you to all of the mechanics slowly, and I think it holds your hand a little too much at the beginning.  It does build up immensely into the most engrossing video game storyline I have experienced so far.

  •  I agree with Papi (none / 0)

I don't think I'll ever spend the time to really get into it.  When I play, it is at night (after kids in bed).  So I decide...  Play a MP game with Gearheads and other friends (Gears, GTA MP, Halo) or play SP.

    So, I play MP.

Maybe when I'm on vacation or something..

Plus... I don't like the controls.

  •  Hey Papi (none / 0)

Sorry to hear your daughter is sick.

I'm in your boat.  It's tough with a family, work, other activities and when you break from the game you start to lose a bit of interest.  But some are right once you get into about 3 to 4 hrs into the game it does get better.  Just you need the time.  I stay up from 11pm ET. to 4am ET to play but then i crash at the end of the week and i know it's not healthy.....

Hopefully you will get into it.

My best wishes for your daughter's health.

  •  Though a learning curve really exists (none / 0)

After you get past it, the game is one of the best experiences ever. Seriously.

The controls are also some of the best in gaming for driving, and shooting gets better and better.

    GTA4 is GREAT!

And i would actually say that the fun factor is exponential. I mean, every 2-3 hours of campaign the amount of fun is multiplied.

having the same complaint with a different game, I think it was Zelda: Twilight Princess?
  •  I (none / 0)

actually do have ADD and absolutely love this game.  The story is one of the best in a video game hands down.  I played very little of the other GTA games but do feel the controls are much better than in the past GTA games.  I'm about 26 hrs in and just play when I have some time in the evenings, I haven't played it in a couple of days now because of being busy and all.  Just the amount of things you can do in the game is also amazing, the different characters you interact with.  Papi hopefully you can stick with it because you'll miss out on one hell of a story otherwise, it does just keep getting better and better as you go.  It is about a 30 some hour game and I'm loving every minute of it so far.
  •  THANK YOU! (none / 0)

Someone else who agrees. People hail this game like it's the second coming of Christ.

    False messiah people! :p

  •  Hey Blez (none / 0)

That's not true, you are a gamer who will "put in tht time." Come on, you actually finished Assassin's Creed.
  •  Dissing on the game's controls is madness (none / 0)

you are all just a bunch of noobs. lol.

Everytime i play the game, there is an EPIC experience that i haven't had before. Only got to play a little last night... but here is what happened.

    1. Bought a nice suit and stole a luxury car to take my gf out on a date.

    2. Got there, she didn't like the "new" me.

She treats me differently now... :(

The thing is, it honestly pissed me off. I mean, Nico worked hard for her to have a good time, and she didn't like it at all!

I'll ramble about it on teh podcast.
