Anyone excited about Huxley?

Sun Jun 22, 2008 at 09:26:06 PM EST

I know there's been a diary somewhere about the upcoming MMO game from Korean publisher, WebZen (formerly publisher of the Real Time World's "APB").  They've been working on Huxley for quite some time now since the 360 was launched.  There's currently a beta test for the PC-version which will eventually show up on the 360 if everything goes as planned.  However, MS' abysmal track record for MMO projects leave much to be desired.  The amount of classes, clans, & weapons look remarkable.  Since it's built on Epic's Unreal 3 engine, this game is already looking gorgeous.  They've even hired Kevin Riepl (the composer for Gears 1 & 2 and UT3) to compose the music.  Anyways, there's a new game trailer of CGI in Korean.  Check it out.

  •  Wow, it really, REALLY looks good (none / 0)

It is cool that even though this game seems to have been in development hell, it is coming along nicely.  If I recall correctly, it didn't look like this type of game in the early videos - the models are similar but I think the environment and the "monsters" either weren't revealed earlier, or have completely changed in appearance.  Regardless, looks great, and I love me some UT3 engine graphics!

Hey, about that language, funky stuff.  It seems to me like it is a mix of Japanese and Korean(?) because I can understand some of it, and all the English-origin words are spoken with a Japanese accent. At the beginning:

"cheku pointo touchaku"  -> We have arrived at the checkpoint.  (and then I cannot understand what he says, and I don't even recognize the syllables, though it does sound Korean.)  Hmm...  Interesting.

    Looks awesome!

  •  It's stunning (none / 0)

how it looks just like Gears of War; yet also Korean.

After having watched the trailer, I'm also rather stumped by a personal query (perhaps 3Suns would be so kind as to fill me in on whether its perhaps a difference in frame of reference, or are people with Asian mindsets entirely uninterested in symbological intimidation?)

For example, the First Reconnaissance Battalion (USMC) has a cliche (yet completely badass) insignia: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a4/1st_Recon_Bn_Color.jpg

Marcus Fenix bears the skull/cog logo on his chest, and almost everything meant to intimidate has a gun, a skull, or some inference of destruction in it.
However, I can't recall any Asian symbolism that vaguely intimidated me (for example, the insignia on the armor of one of the characters in the Huxley trailer sported what appeared to me to be a stylized monkey's head)?

Is this a simple case of me having a different frame of reference regarding whats "scary", or are Koreans, Chinese and Japanese simply uninterested in trying to scare me with a skull and crossbones?

    •  Simplicity & humility are as part of... (none / 0)

the Asian cultures as apple pie is to America.  How Asians symbolize pride differs from Western ideologies.  Take for instance the Japanese rising sun during WWII that adorned their flag & the five golden stars on a completely red background on China's.  Representing imagery of skulls and/or other menacing representations are considered bad omens in these superstitious cultures.  I remember when my mother would scold me for speaking of our our nightmares first thing in the morning.

  •  It looks all right (none / 0)

But these are all cinematics.  I need to see actual game play before I get excited.

Plus I'm starting to realize that there are very few non-North American designed games that I've been able to get into.
