The Best Games of the Now Generation
By papi blez

I'm wondering if you had to pick a top five games for this current generation of consoles, what would it be?  That means the 360, PS3 and Wii.  I imagine mine are going to be very different from most folks.

But my top five games for this generation thus far have been:

  1.  Gears of War:  Really, did anyone doubt this?  I've played it more than any other game online, maybe ever.  I've probably played through the campaign five times or so and pretty much every Friday night has been dedicated to Gears outside of a few months dedicated almost exclusively to number two on my list.

  2.  Call of Duty 4:  I still love this game.  I haven't played it much recently just because I have so many other games to play and we're playing Gears for FFF, but Modern Warfare is a blast even with some of the issues like not being able to get into games as a group, spawn camping and overall camping in general.  This instantly became the second-most played game on my list in terms of multiplayer.  Not only that, but the campaign was also just top notch with sections that were just pure fun.

  3.  NHL 08:  NHL 07 took NHL hockey to the next level and NHL 08 refined the experience.  I'm a huge hockey fan, so this game hits me as a lot more relevant than many of you, but if you like hockey in the least, you owe it to yourself to pick this one up.  I did have a major issue with it in that the difficulty was ridiculous.  Anything above the pro level is like you're a pee wee team taking on the 1980's Edmonton Oilers.  But overall, the game was brilliant.

  4.  Assassin's Creed:  I'm one of the few, apparently, that thought that this game was pure genius.  Everything from the storytelling to Altair's controls were just awesome.  For me, so much of gaming is all about being bad ass and Altair is a bad ass to the nth degree.  Yes, it was repetitive at times, but so is Halo.  If the gameplay is fun, then who cares?

  5.  Wii Sports:  Yes, I recently got a Wii.  And the only game I play on it is Wii Sports because it's really, really fun.  And it is really the tentpole that shows off what the Wii is capable of, more than any other game out there.  You're literally swinging a tennis racket, rolling a bowling ball or swinging a baseball bat.  It's not true to simulation of these sports (no double plays in baseball, fielders jump 10 feet in the air to catch some balls).  Plus it's a blast to play with my daughter.

If I expanded the list out to top 10, the list would include Uncharted, Call of Duty 2, Halo 3, BioShock and Viva Pinata. That's my personal list.  What's yours?

Display:

Hmmmmm...

  1. Gears of War
  2. Call of Duty 4
  3. Dead Rising
  4. Crackdown
  5. Orange Box

You reminded me how much I love Wii sports, though, now I really want to play some Wii tennis, haha.

Meh...

I can play Crackdown for way longer than I can play GTA.  Climbing up the agency tower, or the building where the final boss is in Shai Gen, in my SUV never gets old.  Going into oppo traffic with the fully upgraded semi is also non-stop fun.

I'm feeling California and looking Minnesota.

In other news, I JUST BEAT BLACKENED ON DRUMS!!!  Man, that pumps me up, I just did the biggest fist-pump in the world, it put Tiger Woods and Rafael Nadal to shame.  Alright, I need to calm my heart-rate, haha.

Great list! My list of the

"Best games of now" (In no particular order) would have to include:

Bioshock: For one who completes this game, there is no rival single player experience available on the 360.  Story, depth, catchy gameplay and awesome twists makes this one of the best entertainment experiences I've had.

Gears of War:  A solid (yet light) single player with an unbelievably fun multiplayer experience.  I've played this game more than any other by far.

Halo 3:  Now, if I had a group of people to play it with, this may be my top choice.  A game with more solid features than any console game out there with the repetitively fun gameplay to match.  A game that allows you to redesign your favorite maps to your liking,  record your favorite moments of both single and multiplayer, take pictures then upload them online and still give you that "YES! 50-49!!!" feeling deserves a top spot among the best games available.

Grand Theft Auto 4: While ultimately I feel GTA 4 was about 4 fries short of the greatest happy meal ever, I cannot deny the awesome moments that can be found in GTA 4.  Playing Free Roam with your friends can rival any multiplayer experience out there and the single player is long enough to keep you satisfied for hours on end.  A truly 'great' game.

Portal: Portal takes the Orange Box over the edge. Creative, fun and hilarious gameplay design puts Portal among some of the great games available this generation.

I completely agree with your list

Bioshock: was a slice of gaming heaven I loved every second of it.

Gears of War: thats a no brainer.

Halo 3: Theres no competition when it comes to a fleshed out multiplayer system. This is the game that all others should look to in terms of online functionality (Although the core gameplay isnt my thing I give props to just the sheer number of options there are)

Portal: Was just plain genius.

And i think i would switch out grand theft auto 4 with Call of Duty 4. GTA has never really been my thing.

and i gotta say

that COD4 had an amazing single player experience. Having the main AMERICAN character die was in my eyes as a non American resident of the earth, was extremely shocking to show something like that in a video game. I thought it was extremely well done, and truly shows the horror of war and that America and its soldiers aren't as invincible as they are made out to be. (From a non American perspective)

Great thoughts man

Ya those two are switchable IMO. I think it's funny that just weeks ago many were claiming GTA as one of the greatest games of all time and raving on and on about how awesome it is. (I'm talking on the boards~We've reamed reviewers enough ;) Now, almost no one has it as one of their top 5 games of this generation.

I

didn't really enjoy it, I mean I already traded it off and didn't even finish it.  I was never into the other GTA games either.  Not my cup of tea I guess :(  I did like the story in it, that was enjoyable to me.

My favorites in no particular order

Gears of War- of course, this ones a given. I really don't even have to go into details, you know this game is, of course, like the best game EVAR. The sequel might make me have a panic attack since it seems so much greater.

BIOSHOCK- just like SweetTea said, this is probably one of, if not, the greatest games I have ever played. This game literally has no flaws. Well maybe a few, but not many. The art design, the STORYLINE(zOmg. sorry, I just go crazy for a good story), the graphics, the controls (suprisingly a good category for this game),etc. If you haven't played this game (who hasn't?) and don't mind a few frights, this game is DEFINITELY for you. No doubt.

Halo 2- now, hear me out. Most of you say that Halo 2's story was attrocious and that the game in general was a letdown. but, this was the game that actually introduced me to online gaming. The multiplayer was AMAZING (at least, at the time). And I didn't even have the annoying little kid factor into play yet because sadly, I was a wee lad too (like 11 years old, I know, I know). To me, the campaign was great. Alot creepier than its predessor(sp?). If it wasn't for this game, I probably wouldn't have Live. Let alone a 360.

Halo 3- I enjoyed it just as much as Halo 2. The thing that puts it on my list is Forge and Theater. Two of the most useful things for making videos like machinimas and stuff.

and thats about it, there are a bunch more games that were amazing, but they wern't the GREATEST (these include: MGS4, Call of Duty 4, Assassin's Creed, Phoenix Wright series, and much more)

Mine

  1. GTA IV - Single player was truly epic, I loved the story (even though most missions did get a little repetitive)

  2. Rock Band - Easily one of the best games out right now. I never realized how fun it actually is to sing haha.

  3. Assassin's Creed - A game about something that happened in history? That's my kind of game.

  4. Call of Duty 4 - Awesome single player and alright MP

  5. Bioshock - One of, if not, the best single player I have probably ever played.

Playoffs?!? You talking about... playoffs?!

My list is:

  1. Gears of war
  2. Call of Duty 4 (that one came out of nowhere for me)
  3. Bioshock
  4. Wii Sports
  5. Mario Galaxy

papi, you got a Wii and never mentioned it until now?  You must get Mario Galaxy and play through it with you daughter.  She will love it, and she can fully participate by collecting stars.  By the way, now can you understand my bewilderment at Nintendo NOT publishing Wii Sports 2 and 3 and 4!  It is just crazy.  Also, what do you think of the Miis?  I LOVE 'em.  The whole fam and a bunch of friends are in there.  Some of them such good likenesses, they crack us up every time we see them.  I think MS's avatards are gonna be a TON of fun.  (MS is even catering to the Furries.)

I got Super Mario Galaxy

And my daughter likes to watch it, but it's a little complicated for her.  She LOVES Wii Sports.  She loves watching it and seeing herself on there.  Yes, we created a Maya Wii almost immediately.

Yes, but did you create a papi, and Mommie

Mii too?  Have to get the whole family in!

OK, that is great. Just wanted to be sure you got Mario Galaxy.  It really is the Disneyland of gaming, imo.

Hey, I can't speak for the others here, but I am sure they feel the same.  We really miss you around here. To find out that you have been playing Wii Sports and own a Wii way after the fact, just shows how long it has been since you have been able to kick the tires around here regularly.  Take care of work and fam first, and then at your convenience, tell us more about your journey in the Wii land.  ;)
