Passive vs. Active Entertainment

My brother took a lot of crap recently for making a comment about Metal Gear Solid 4 being passive entertainment.  I think a lot of people misunderstood what my brother was trying to say when he said that passive entertainment was on its way out.

Now I don't want to speak for him, but to me what he was getting at was the fact that even the most passive forms of entertainment like television and movies where you sit back and just let the story unfold in front of you are becoming more interactive.  The shows that are the most popular are the ones in which you have some kind of interactive component to them.  For example, American Idol and Dancing with the Stars are shows in which America has a direct say in who stays and who goes.  It's not just about sitting back and watching.  Lost is a remarkable phenomenon because people gather online and discuss the theories about what is really happening on the show.  Even watching sports isn't a passive experience anymore as people are gathering in communities like my day job SB Nation's family of blogs to discuss their favorite team's fortunes while they're playing.

So I think Cliff was making a reference to how Web 2.0 and all the other things happening with media now.  The interactivity of Facebook, MySpace.  It's all about our own little corner of interactivity with friends, family and even meeting new people.  XBox Live is another example of this.  Friends Lists.  Home.  XMB's to see what the other people in your life are doing.

In other words, it's not often about sitting back and turning one of the most interactive medias (video games) into a passive one by making you sit and watch cut scene after cut scene.  Like I said, I'm not speaking for his intentions, but that's what I read into what he was getting at.  That MGS4 was more of a step back towards passive media when most other games are moving towards being much more active, incorporating even quick-time events during what have been passive cut scenes in the past.

I definitely think media has moved more towards interactive rather than the passive.  Blogs, social media sites, even TV shows have moved more towards making everything much more interactive.  Gears is very much all about you being very active in the world and if you aren't, your AI teammates aren't going to get things done.

I love the hell out of MGS4

and i am entertained by its EPIC 45 minute cutscenes after one another.

But... the way story was told in Bioshock was MUCH more enthrilling and entertaining.

Same with Gears of War minus the slow walking during radio talk.

MGS4 is almost like an extremely interactive movie torward the end of it (Peter Jackson's Halo Project?!?!)

Great thoughts!

What started as Web 2.0 has turned into culture 2.0

Lost really has become a phenomenon.  On top of discussing the show with countless friends, my family has watched almost 3 full seasons in less than a month.  That's over 50- 40 minute episodes.

That's a family that use to get together for dinner, church, the occasional family trip and that's about it.  Now almost every night we watch 2 episodes of Lost and eat 4 plus bags of popcorn.

As this applies to video games, something like Bioshock or Half Life screws cut scenes and gives you a full first person experience found no where else.  A game like Gears gives you a cinematic combination of being active and passively watching cool cut scenes.  All of this works wonders in engaging people.

That said, I'm not so sure sitting back and watching a movie that doubles as an interactive game wouldn't work.  What if for a chunk of the Lost episode you are the characters?  You have one of those "WTF is about to happen!?!?" moments and then the controller is placed in your hands.  Even 4 people's hands.

Apply that to your favorite movie and imagine the possibilities.

If this was done well I guarantee my entire family would play and I'd be out a 360.

I played the hell out of MGS4

and I have to agree with your brother. It just seemed like it had too many cut scenes and not enough game play. You sat there and watched a cut scene for 20-40 minutes and every once in a while you would have to hit x or L1 to do something but that wasn't very interactive at all. It just seemed like they threw that in there so that you wouldn't get bored with the cut scenes. You would play for 15 minutes and then go into a cut scene. The cut scenes are what makes that game so long. Not the game play.

2k+ chainsaw kills. cant wait for gears 2. Terminator walking since 2007.

I

actually like both types of game play.  The games with the cut scenes are awesome and the ones without are enjoyable as well.  I loved the fast game play of Gears and I enjoyed the cut scenes in MGS4, they never were boring to me.  Zoso I agree about the slow walking during the radio talk in Gears, I actually hope Gears 2 isn't like that, I like to just roll around and be able to move during scenes like that :)

Great post, papi!

First of all, I love it that Cliff speaks his mind a bit about other games.  When describing why he made certain choices in the creation of Gears he often referenced Halo.  I think that demonstrates a certain amount of confidence and passion in his own product.

A whole bunch of things.  As regards the Web 2.0, and the human participation through blogs, podcasts, interactive sites, and even YouTube (because people have to put stuff up, for others to watch), this shift is irreversible and PROFOUND.  It has changed the face of this coming American election.

Anyway, I know that you are not saying that passive entertainment will disappear, but I think there will always be a huge market for passive entertainment, and whoever is the first to properly marry movies and games, they will have a HUGE hit on their hands.  I don't know if it will be Peter Jackson, but someone, someday, will do it, and it may well be more widely accepted than video games themselves.

A lot of the time, even though there are hours left in the evening, I am simply too mentally exhausted to game - I only want to watch a movie.

Agreed

A little off topic here... Aren't not all, but some of the pictures that are displayed in all the posts and diaries violating copyright infringement? I have not seen one with the source or giving credit to a particular site...I'm not an expert on it but I just was reading a little about it at work and the question came to mind

The picture itself IS the source.

If anyone wants to know where it is from, just click!
