Oh my god.

The movie is done by the guy who did "300", his movies are art in motion.

Big thanks to Mielke's blog on 1up where he posted the link.

Also, go and tell Greg Ford what you thought of the 3 press conferences over at his blog.

  •  Very amped about this movie! (none / 0)

The graphic novels were awesome!!!  I've been a fan of Alan Moore for a long, long time.  Also, Zack Snyder's the director!  What a win-win combination!

but 300 was a crappy movie.

I love Watchmen and Alan Moore, but I would have infinitely preferred Robert Rodriguez, or, really, anybody else to be the helmsman for this film.

you like Planet Terror?  Just curious because I think that's the only R. Rodriguez film I've seen.

And I saw a preview for Watchmen tonight, and it was a pretty damn cool preview, I must admit.

      •  I agree with you (none / 0)

that it was great at retelling the Frank Miller comic book, but the plot was nonexistent, and (in my opinion) the entire film was carried by Gerard Butler's chest.

Now, that is not inherently a bad thing (see Angelina Jolie's Tomb Raider series for a chest that can carry a film), but combined with  the cheesy dialogue, poor acting, the fact that blood never hit the ground (it just sprayed into the air and disappeared), it combined to make a film that was, I concede, awesome in the theatre, but as soon as I stepped out of the building I was struck by just how little there was between men getting speared.

To summarize, there isn't anything wrong with a few hours of Michael Bay esque explosions/gore/other "special" effects, but as a movie or cinematic experience, I felt I deserved a bit more for my nickel.

        •  I think the way the blood acted was (none / 0)

more of an artistic choice, and made it to look more like a comic book. But I'd have to say 300 was an incredible cinematic experience.
        •  the thing about story (none / 0)

and plot is that the source material was a graphic novel. Really only so much you can do with the 300 story. At least all the spartans weren't naked like in Frank Miller's original! lol.

I didn't go into 300 expecting a plot with much depth because honestly that would be untrue to the source material. 300 was a movie that i think the majority of the was on art/style. The movie looks STUNNING in HD.

thought it was cheesy dialogue?  I'm usually a really harsh critic on dialogue, but I thought the narration in 300 was done excellently.  Maybe some of Butler's lines weren't great, but it was the narration that shone, I thought.

Regarding story, while it was indeed true to the comic book, I felt that the comic was as much an art gallery as it was a story; a comic can be flipped back and forth to see continuity in story; thus the depth and background illustration can be that much deeper (as in The Watchmen).
However, in a film you're being dragged along at 24-32 frames a second (which can be a strong artistic element, but necessitates less background elements).

Source material plays an important role in film; Transformers, was, pound for pound, a poor movie.
But when considering that the source material was a series of plastic toys and what amounted to 30 minute toy commercials, I think they did a good job making a story.
However, 300, simply by nature of it having happened 2500 years ago means that the only story to be made out of it is 300 muscular men killing people.
Again, that doesn't make it any less cinematic, but it does make it a poor film.

For example, despite the fact that "Dirty Harry" consists mostly of stares and intimidation, I still find myself asking whether he/I had fired six shots, or only five. I also find myself telling myself that a man has got to know his limitations, along with the indisputable fact that you can go ahead and make my day.
However, I would be incredibly surprised if on 4th of July 2010 I find myself shouting "This is a SPARKLER!".
