The Meatshield: Feature or Exploit

Sat Aug 30, 2008 at 03:39:22 PM EST

I am going to try to make this short but good.  We all saw the "Sinkhole" walk-through and heard Cliff point out that when all the enemies are dead, the meatshield that one might be carrying gets dropped automatically.  Cliff said that it was because otherwise, people would just keep walking around with one [for safety one assumes].  I think that speaks VOLUMES about the value of the meatshield.

In MP, that won't happen of course.  You will get to keep your meatshield until it or you are destroyed.  So, I started thinking, when faced with a downed enemy, what is to stop everyone from ALWAYS choosing shield instead of execution?  Seriously, is it possible that 2 weeks after the game is released Epic is going to have to work on a Title Update because every one is running around with meatshields and pistols?  Is it going to be the grenade-tag exploit of Gears 2? Or am I just being paranoid?

  •  There also is (none / 0)

a slight chance that there will be a glitch where the meat shield doesn't explode or the player will be able to roadie run with the shield. If so, then players might even be able to do the crabwalk glitch with the shield. The meatshield definitely needs to be ironed out before release
  •  I think that (none / 0)

the people who will play the game the way it's meant to be played, and don't stick to one specific feature will use the meatshield effectively and strategically. However, there most certainly will be the people who do nothing but down someone and then walk around with that meatshield until someone eventually takes it out. I for one, will definitely only use it as an effective strategy. Especially when its a whole team against me.

will it be like grenade-tagging, where even though we don't want to use it except as a strategic/taunting type action, everyone else (in the XBL wilderness) is using it so exclusively that we are forced to create house rules?  Or, like Infinity Ward still needing to create "Collars" for CoD4, Epic would need to create "Hot Potato" (anyone who holds a meatshield for more than 10 seconds gets "burned") for GoW2.

  •  I'm more worried (none / 0)

about remote grenades than the meatshield. I just imagine kiddies chillin in corners the whole match with nade traps set up

maybe there's a counter attack to a meat shield wielder. For one, what happens when the Shield holder is hit by a smoke? He'll probably drop the body, or you can aim for spots the shield isn't protecting. Like his face, or legs.

Also maybe a Grenade or Torque to blow up the corpse. Or you could simply retreat to gain distance  since the shield holder moves so slow, then you could then either find an explosive weapon, or just shoot at the corpse until he drops it. I for one am probably only going to use the Meat Shield if i'm the last guy alive, or if I have a couple guys on me.

    •  About gibbing the meatshield... (none / 0)

Cliff has confirmed that if you're carrying a meatshield, and its hit by a boomshot, it will gib, but you live. So I'm guessing any explosive will destroy the meatshield, like a Torque, or nade. I have a feeling that the 2 rockets being shot 1 after another with an AR'd Boomshot will be VERY useful in situations that involve a meatshield.
  •  Well I can think of a situation where I wouldn't (none / 0)

want a meatshield, it would be when Im in possession of a power weapon snipe/torque/mulcher etc, and I can do more damage than with a pistol. Or if Im in a hurry to get to a certain point on the map in an annex type gametype.
  •  i dont think this will (none / 0)

be the case.  If you think about it, while you have the meat shield you are very slow and vulnerable and someone could easyily come behind you and take you out.  If you play the game smart this wont be a problem.

    Im "Geared Up" are you?

  •  I'm skeptical of everything just because (none / 0)

of the Net coding. I know it's all being re-written but experience speaks louder than hype! ;)

I'm SO excited about stuff like the meat shield and hope it will all flow nicely.

  •  During the very first weeks of Gears 2's... (none / 0)

release, players will probably be flocking to the meatshield option in droves.  However, tactics will evolve.  There will be times when it's advatageous to grab the meatshield up and times where it's too risky.  Remember, just because you have a meatshield in your hands does not equate to 100% cover.  You can still be headshotted with the Longshot or Torquebow.  Also, coupled with the slower maneuverability of your character and the pistol as your weapon when you have the meatshield tactic deployed, many will probably use this tactic less and less when all of those Gearhead sharpshooters are lurking around the map.  It will be awesome to put so many choices in the MP gameplay.  You really can choose the pacing of how you want to play your game.
