Will Gears 2 MP be ruined by "The Experience"?

Wed Sep 24, 2008 at 03:30:33 PM EST

A few days ago while playing Gears with Blank, Suns, and Rage... we started talking about how bad Xbox Live has been lately due to them probably working out some kinks for the "new" Xbox Experience.. or whatever they're calling it. We all were saying that if XBL is this bad now, with people constantly dropping from games at random times, how bad will it be in November when Gears 2 releases, and the update is released? We arent sure when the update is coming, but there is a very good hint, pretty much revealing that it IS coming in November. Check it out...

How bad do you guys think XBL will be for us when the update arrives? Will it be almost unplayable? Or will we be able to tolerate it...

but I think that XBL will basically be pooched for at least 2 months upon the release of "Experience".  So, if that just happens to be around the time that Gears of War 2 is released, then count on NOT being able to play GoW2 with your friends (without getting unexpectedly booted, or games quitting half way through, or not being able to hook up in the lobby etc. etc.) for AT LEAST 2 months.

There is nothing in Microsoft's history of software creation and support that provides any evidence whatsoever to the contrary.  Yet, I could provide you with last year's example, when the Dashboard update was a fraction what it is going to be this time and with no new content offered (i.e., Netflix) as immediate evidence that Live will be a mess.

Live will be "broken" for at least 2 months.

    I hope I am wrong.

will have to set up a room with 9 BOTS and then just turn on our computers, connect via skype, and laugh and chat as we individually take on the other "team".

You know, I don't really think it will be that bad, but it is gonna be NOT good.

This is software for crying out loud, and you don't know what bugs you are going to have until it is tested under full strain.  Even if the company developing it had a great record, which they decidedly do not, it would be a stretch to expect the update to work without patches.  It is gonna be a disaster.

don't know how you can be so sure that everything is going to blow up. I didn't when halo 3 came out. M$$ knows that if they screw the pooch to bad it will cost them

not GoW2 that will mess up live, it will be the fall update.
        •  Nate, it actually did fall apart when Halo 3 (none / 0)

came out, but they managed to get the service running smoothly within a few days or so (if I recall correctly).  However, when the fall update came out, as Machete mentioned, sometime around the release of CoD4, the system was whack until after Christmas - two full months!  I remember because I, along with many, many others had invited friends over to show them how "cool" XBL was, and I could hardly get a single, solid match without interruption, all night.  So much for showing off to friends.  And that was a minor update compared to what we will be getting this year.

Debbie Downers.  I, too, believe that XBL will be completely gimped when Gears 2 hits.  Coupled with the fact that Fable 2 co-op players will be on along with the millions of COD 4 & Halo 3 diehards, etc.  Even during these past two weeks, XBL has been dropping or disconnecting people on a regular basis.  This may be due in part to MS optimizing the system to roll out the fall update, but this is ridiculous.  MS is clearly a reactionary-based company, they can see the pitfalls but will only choose to address them when the situation actually appears rather than take the pro-active approach of preparation.  This is what we're paying for, and as paying customers- we're up to our ears in excuses.  Just look at the latest debacles with Halo 3 and COD 4 bringing XBL to a grinding halt.  I don't want another XBLA Undertow as an apology, just give me the service that I paid for!

Looks like the "Experience" is coming A LOT sooner than expected.  WTF!!!  Next WEEK!!!  I just hope these noobs don't clog up the Live pipeline, like last year...  And if it does, we better get a better FREE GAME than Undertow...  Or at least some MS points...

  •  Well it might be just because Im lucky (none / 0)

but I've been dropped once from xbox live and that was because my internet cut out, Maybe Canada has a separate server of some kind? I know theres a place in Toronto where all the xboxs are sent, so maybe theres one in the general area around here, who knows?
  •  On Major Nelson's blog (none / 0)

he states that the downtime on Monday is to prepare the servers for the update. It's a huge server overhaul apparently and is going to take all day to do. So hopefully this will solve everyone's connectivity problems.

I'm gonna saw me up some of that sex locust.
