Questions for Cliff B.

Tue Sep 30, 2008 at 12:47:13 AM EST

Hey Guys,

I'm in need of some assistance...again.

I'm interviewing the brother of the big boss of this here site tomorrow, and I'm looking for some interesting questions to ask. While Gears 1 and 2 will certainly come up during the several hours I'll be spending with Epic's wunderkind, the focus of the actual interview is more on Cliff himself. What his tastes are. How he sees the state of the video game industry. Who are some people that he'd love to work with. So if you have anything AT ALL that you'd like me to ask, post them in the comments.

Thanks again,

David

  •  Here is a couple (none / 0)

    • Does Epic plan on reaching out to the community sites for the game or showing any love to the fan base outside of the official forums? (which is a clusterfuck put lightly)

    • Where does he see Epic as a gaming company in the next ten years? How will they handle their current IPs? After GOW, whats next for Cliff?

  •  Way to go, Dave! (none / 0)

  • Since the Gears IP has been influenced by numerous games such as RE 4, Killswitch, and others; which franchise would you want to put your own spin on, ala Cliff-style, if you had your pick of the litter?  What would your main focus be on re-inventing/taking that  IP into new territories.

or (just another iteration of that same line of questioning)

  • The industry seems to be going through a resurgence of older-generation games such as Bionic Commando, Splatterhouse, etc.  Which franchise would you like to take a crack at?

  • Other developers (cough-EA-cough) have called out Gears 1 as not contributing anything truly innovative to gameplay.  We all witnessed how "innovative" Army of Two was and how it was ultimately panned by the gaming media outlets.  Practically every game out there has incorporated some form of cover system, co-op play, and other aspects of Gears 1 into their games.  Explain how you viewed this kind of industry criticism and what your reaction was when you were proven right on your convictions.

  •  A few more questions... (none / 0)

  • Developing community rapport is essential to harboring success in this day and age of gaming.  Companies such as Infinity Ward, Bungie, Lionhead, Bioware, etc. have all developed and maintained great relationships with their fan base.  In fact, the Robert Bowlings and Luke Smiths of the industry are synonymous with earned respect that the fan/gamers' opinions and suggestions count for something.  Word of mouth is cheap publicity and advertising.  Tapping the power and influence of the masses can make the returns grow to ten-fold.  Why has Epic been so late in recognizing the importance of maintaining a relationship with its community?  MS has just started the process with the hiring of SixOkay, but when will we truly see a concerted effort into reaching out to the Gears community?   Our community site, GearheadsofWar.com, rarely gets any notice or any recognition whatsoever even though we've provided the community with such a rich and diverse group of informed Gears heads.  Where's the love?

  • There's been so much talk about the huge advertising campaign from MS that will be on par with the Halo 3 ad onslaught.  It's 37 days left to Gears 2 hitting retail and we've yet to see the massive advertising that was touted.  This might be a severely missed opportunity on MS' strategy or lack thereof.   If MS is counting on this game to be their biggest hit of the holiday season, what is the issue for the slow rollout in the advertising?  What is Epic doing to force the issue?

  •  The X-factor (none / 0)

    Here is a question:

In an interview with 1Up (for example), you [Cliff] talked about something you called the "X-factor", a term that by your use and description is something more than just a philosophy of making games fun for all, it is actually a tweak in the code.

       1.  To what extent was this "X-factor" responsible for the shenanigans in Gears 1?

       2.  Are you going to be including it in Gears 2?

       3.  What is it exactly - simply a line in the code that changes the location/size of the hit box, or makes the gamer shoot blanks?

        http://www.1up.com/do/feature?pager.offset=2&cId=3157032

EGM: Did you deliberately design Gears' multiplayer to favor chance or chaos in order to make the game more accessible to a broader base? Like when two chain saws go head-to-head--it's a coin toss as to who's going to win that fight. Why not make the game more tactical, so a player knows exactly who's supposed to win in that situation?

CB: For me a lot of those scenarios ultimately boil down to the X-factor. When you're playing a real-time strategy game, and you have two evenly matched players, the one thing that can push it away from a stalemate is that random crate that appears on the battlefield and gives one player an advantage. I think it's good for players who are generally better to be able to defeat other players, but if there's a little bit of a random factor in there to allow the shitty guy to occasionally beat the guy who's really good, I think that, in the name of fun, it's an occasional trade-off that's OK to make.

EGM: Epic Games has a history of making competitive shooters like Unreal Tournament. Gears is fun to play with friends, but it probably won't see major action with the pro leagues....

CB: The game was never designed to be Unreal Tournament. It was always designed as one-third singleplayer game, one-third co-op, and one-third versus multiplayer. The fact that versus has taken off as such a success is a pleasant surprise for us, but it was never something that we had planned to be CPL- [Cyberathlete Professional League] or World Cyber Games--worthy in that regard. It's always been just a "jump in, kick around, and have fun with friends" game. It's not really the kind of versus that we designed for people to play for six figures. That's why we do Unreal Tournament.

EGM: Still, can't you make a game that appeals to the casual audience and is precise enough for tournament-level play?

CB: I think that's something we could potentially iterate on [for a sequel] and nail everything perfectly for extremely high-level competitive play, with high yield for players.

There are always ways around it. The superweapon in your classic shooter is that X-factor of chaos that allows the s***tiest of players to occasionally kill the best players. And what do they do for tournament play? They just disable the superweapon. You can always make small changes--this is the rule set for the hardcore, and this is the rule set for casual players...something that'll maintain the hardcore but invite the more casual to play. But we try to keep them in separate pens whenever possible....

X factor status...   Is it still in?  If so, can it be turned off?

And if it is out or can be turned off, then what about EPIC being the Source for Gears 2 Leagues?

This could become part of their Franchise.  Even a way to earn more money if cost is an issue (using MS points) as an entry fee to form an Official EPIC League team.

There could be various levels of the league as well.

A, B, C, D level teams.  And Timezones, gametypes, etc...

After a certain period of time in regular League play, there could be tournaments, nominal prizes, etc....

Things like THIS could make for a Very Interesting EPIC community.  Not just checking the EPIC website from time to time, posting a could things on the forum, checking stats, BUT Actual Things going on.

  •  Questions... (none / 0)

    • What do you prefer, first or third-person games?

    • Do you think the success of Gears has contributed to the rise of the third-person shooter?

    • If you had to guess, how much does input from the community actually affect the way you guys develop games?

    • To quote Harry Carey, "If you were a hot dog, and you were starving, would you eat yourself?" If so, what condiments would you use?
  •  Where (none / 0)

did the idea of a Chainsaw on a gun come from?
