What Would You Like for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Mon Mar 02, 2009 at 03:08:22 AM EST

So I apologize to Kenai for not joining his Gears 2 game on Friday night.  My buddy who got a 360 for last Christmas begged me to play some Horde with him and you know what?  I still like Horde more than anything else about Gears 2.  I love it in part just because of the chaos of it.  And at one point this past Friday, I successfully decapitated three Locust in a row with a torque bow arrow.  Never done that before.

Any way, I've only scratched the surface on Killzone 2, so I'll refrain from going into it too much.  I will say that the controls are still tripping me up.  I really think that game could've used a stick to cover button like Gears because it's so essential to use cover in the campaign. I'm sure I'll get more into this in the coming weeks.

But the other thing I wanted to mention is that Infinity Ward is asking COD: MW fans to chime in on what you'd like to see on the next iteration of the series that is coming this year.  I've mentioned how much I loved COD 4 many times on this site.  It might just be my favorite first person shooter ever.  And the reason is simple.  I believe the mechanics of that game are better than any other for console.  Even better than Halo.  Every other first person shooter has to measure up to IW's masterpiece.  And I believe that the only way that it can be topped is by that team itself.

Here's my concern.  I'm afraid IW is going to make things overly complicated.  I'm afraid that they will add too much.  I like not having vehicles in COD 4.  I think any modern vehicle will make it an impossible game to balance.  So please don't add the vehicle element.

I do believe that there should be some kind of penalty for camping too much.  If you stay stationary in one spot for too long, you will automatically die and re-spawn at a very different part of the map.

But ultimately, I basically want them to add four-person live co-op, more weapons, more maps and the ability to customize your soldier's look for multiplayer (maybe even steal something from Rainbow Six and let people put their faces on their soldier).  I would also like more colors and rewards for certain guns.  Like I have the red tiger M4, but I'd like something better.  I do NOT think that they should mess with much else.  This to me, was a game that was so close to perfection but they just needed to iterate on a few things.

So you tell me Gearheads, what would you like to see in COD: MW 2?  And how was FFF for you?  Any stories to share?

  •  I checked (none / 0)

the place where everyone was leaving comments on what they want in MW2, and literally EVERY post I read, the person said co-op campaign.. so I'm pretty sure that's going to be added in :P anyways, I want some better guns, more variations of camo for all guns, easy ways to get golden guns (golden uzi FTW!)... and some maps that have lightning/thunder/rain in them (not like Wet Works..). Thats about it.

  •  No apologizies needed (none / 0)

I know what you mean.  I have a friend who I've been "evangelizing" for the 360 for a couple years.  He too just bought one over Christmas.  It takes some one on one time just to get my friend comfortable with the controls (we've been playing Horde too).  Hopefully at some point he will be ready to game with the fella's.  Actually, He has already (Creature - his GT and I Horded it last week with SweetTea, Robbins and Jambi.

  •  I would love co-op, as long as... (none / 0)

it is different from the system World at War had.  It was just too tiresome, not too mention over-exposed, to keep reviving your buddy, when he was in reality a greater asset lying on the ground capping heads with his handgun.  I thought about maybe having an A.I. Corpsman be able to be called to recover a teammate, but that won't work if IW wants to incorporate any stealth missions.

Hell, maybe I just needed a better partner and I wouldn't be having an issue...

  •  What I want: (none / 0)

    Terrorist zombie mode

More guns, perks, and more customization options

    Character customization

    NO vehicles

Team Tactical (3 vs. 3..they better not remove that gametype)

  •  as you said more (none / 0)

variance and control with your character and weapons. i dont care one way or the other about coop campaign due to my schedule. they need to address the camping issue as mentioned in other comments.  i do wish they would make the m16 fully automatic, that would kick ass.

what a fun game, i still have a blast with cod4.

also need larger map area for ground war, current maps are a bit too cramped.

played killzone 2 friday, the mp is very fun.  maps are huge for 32 players and graphics look great.  the controls are screwed up but i will adjust as best i can.  the aim lag needs to be addressed. the movement feels slow like running through mud. overall i am enjoying the game.  papi what is your psn name? i have robbins and jambi on my friends list so far.

  •  Robbins idea for a thunder/lightning level (none / 0)

would be awesome. Something relatively dark but really lights up like in Gears when you get to the drilling factory place in the first one.

    •  oh and (none / 0)

I think a customization system like Rainbow Six, where you can customize your armour and everything, but not have it affect your health/armour rating or anything, only aesthetics.

Oh and something that I thought was pretty cool, in Battlefield: Bad Company, being set to a squad, and being able to respawn near your teammate if they're still alive and not in combat. I thought it was really cool and could definitely push for a more team based Call of Duty. Especially for hardcore gametypes.

  •  Improvements and a critics dreaming: (none / 0)

    1. No vehicles, but include some on-rails events, as long as they're as engaging as the AC-130 level.  Perhaps be the main gunner or a M1 Abrams tank (you can't drive and shoot one of those, there are like 5 different stations inside that cramped interior).
    1. Anti-Camping measures: A great way to gain voters in the next election.
    1. USA: Stop keeping all these full scale war events outside of the US of A borders and letting the sci-fi crap take on the home front.  Don't have it during the entire game, but maybe in the last third or quarter of the game to lead to MW 3...and you know there will be another.
    1. Co-op done right: Boxin has the right idea on this one.
    1. Zombie or Terrorist horde...3-Way perhaps?
    1. Keep the varied gametypes and Double XP weekends
    1. Captain Price...need I say more?
    1. Keep the perks, weapons: Add character model tool as well.
    1. Video capture: Silly kill cam, you're just not the one
    1. Grenade nerf: So we have a decent chance against IW (Just kidding, we know all their dirty tricks now...)
  •  I am surprised (none / 0)

at the number of people who want more weapons.  There are SO many right now, I literally haven't tried more than 5 or 6 of them.  It is cool.  Add more, I am just surprised because they are all just small tweaks of each other.  I never hear complaints in the game about the guns.  But every single match I hear complaints about the campers.

    RANT/
If you want some anti-camping measures, please request it.  I have written 402 twice, and posted my collars idea in the twitter.  They don't have to add "collars" but there are many things they could do to get rid of camping.  Don't anybody complain about camping if you haven't bothered to write in about it.  That is all I requested. Think of it, CoD4 without campers.  That would be a game all of you would still be playing without stop.

And why not vehicles?  If developers would give us the opportunity to toggle them on and off, we could elect to not use them.  Provide just a couple of maps that would work with vehicles and then let us decide whether or not we want to play them.

It is mind-boggling that developers can't seem to figure out that they need to give US the control of how we play their game.

  •  May take some time, or relatively unrealistic (none / 0)

Make a massive campaign that could fictionalize WW3. Have a campaign that encompasses both sides of the war. (ex. Axis campaign, Allies Campaign)

Also, have separate rankings for private matches and public matches! You can level up in private matches, but you can't use what you earned in private in public matches. However, you can use the things you earned in public matches and use them in private matches.

    •  Love both of the ideas. (none / 0)

I want a full on, desperate, WW3.  Brutal and terrifying.  It would be tough to top the nuke cutscene in CoD4 in terms of emotion though.

      •  Yeah exactly. (none / 0)

And since there hasn't been (and hopefully won't be) a WW3, IW has a plethora of ideas that could generate an epic game visually, content wise, and emotions. Maybe even if the game is too large, have the game come with 2-discs: one for the campaign and one for MP. While it may be a hassle, I'll gladly trade the burden of switching discs for a great game.

        •  Again with the US homefront (none / 0)

that besides Pearl Harbor in WW2, there have been no military engagements on US soil in a World War, or any major battle since the American Civil War.  It would be cool to explore a new war-front, and not just the same old Pacific, European, and Central American settings (Tom Clancy Ghost Recon for the last).
And I love the two disc option aj, though you can reason that for PS3 owners that it could be all done on one disc.

          •  Very true. Could take different approaches (none / 0)

with the different campaigns. For example, Axis powers (or whatever they'd be called) encroach US soil, and Allied powers would encroach whatever nation or continent.

And just for future reference, my actual name is Abe, not AJ. ;)

            •  LOL Abe, I think you had to clarify (none / 0)

that with me as well.  Also, I kept calling you Ah-beh, because I was so used to pronouncing those letters as romanized Japanese.  LOL

Hey, it would be fantastic to have some of the skirmishes near/on some of the famous landmarks/cities in the U.S.  Gaming in "familiar" territory adds a level of immersion that can't be beat.  (I learned this playing N64 Goldeneye which literally utilized the blue prints of the movie sets.  I loved the movie so the game was truly the opportunity for me to play "James Bond", in my eyes.)

  •  Remove (none / 0)

juggernaut and I'll be happy :)

I didn't care for the tanks in WAW, so I hope IW leaves out the vehicles in MP.

I don't feel they need to add much to this game either Papi, some more perks and a few new weapons and I'm set.

    •  Gibs are good. (none / 0)

Headshots are great, too.  May as well give us Saving Private Ryan on a toggle.

I remember playing Castle Wolfenstein and being SO impressed by the remaining boot with ankle sticking out, after someone tossed a 'nade.  It is as it should be.

    •  Although raising the gore factor would be cool... (none / 0)

I highly doubt that Activision would do that.  They simply get too many sales because the ESRB rates it T rather than M.  The sales figures alone will prevent them from altering the current content to extreme.  Money talks.

As far as Suns' "collar" anti-camping idea goes, let the gamers be able to toggle it on/off as many of you have cried out loud!  This is where Gears 2 really blew it.  Developers think that gamers need to have their hands held and cannot think for themselves.  Let us pick what we want in our gameplay for Pete's sake!!!  Forcing changes on us without any other recourse other than grin and grab our ankles is just plain asinine.  Grrr...

I haven't had the chance to experience CoD:WAW, but vehicles just don't make sense in CoD MP.  It would seem like it would just ruin the balance and skew the maps into being too large and open.

      •  Well Call of Duty 4 was rated mature (none / 0)

and CoD WaW introduced gore.  Shotguns, explosives, and a couple other weapons could take off arms and legs.

As for vehicles, you're absolutely correct, they don't fit in with the balance of the game at all. It just doesn't feel like Call of Duty with tanks driving around.

        •  The gore in CoD 4 was mild compared... (none / 0)

to many of the other games that graced the consoles during that particular year.  I haven't played CoD:WAW so I wasn't aware that the content had gotten substantially graphic.  I stand corrected on CoD 4's ESRB rating of M.  There was very little blood shown at all which led me to believe that it was rated T rather than M.

As in regards to the vehicles in CoD:WAW, wasn't there a patch released just yesterday eliminating the tanks from Hardcore MP?

  •  I say no (none / 0)

vehicles, and try to stop the running snipers.  I dont understand how they're running around with a .50 cal and getting headshots from the hip.  If you wanna snipe then you have to deal with the fact that if you're not stationary you'll be using your pistol or whatever weapon you have as a secondary!

  •  Things I want to see in CoD: MW 2 (none / 0)

    Weapons:
    SCAR
    XM8
    Famas
    Full auto glock
    AUG Para

    Perks:
1st perk slot - extended magazine.  WaW had this available as an attachment for some guns and it was a brilliant idea.

    Customization:
More options for attachments to guns, and complete character customization. Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 did an excellent job of this.
