Some Resulting Effects of My E3 Experience

Thu Jun 11, 2009 at 02:54:04 AM EDT

OK so it's been a week now since I experienced my first E3 and I've realized that there are a few things that have changed about me since that experience.

First and foremost, I've decided to give Mass Effect another spin.  One of the games that nearly all the enthusiast press came away talking about was Mass Effect 2.  And it made me realize that I may have never given the first game a fair try.  I got to this part in the Citadel where I just got bored and finally gave up, especially because I chose the sniper class and I couldn't seem to snipe in the game.  It was like I had serious arthritis and Parkinson's Disease all at once try to snipe the Geth.  So this time I restarted the game as a soldier and it works sooooo much better.  The shooting still isn't terribly smooth and where I need to go at times is still a little confusing, but I'm enjoying it 1,000 times better so far and I'm determined to get through this game if it kills me.  I desperately want to be able to bring over my character to the next one which looks and supposedly plays much differently.

The other big thing that came out of E3 was that I'm seriously excited about a game called The Saboteur.  If you haven't seen much here, check out this video on Game Videos.  It really looks like a lot of fun and the art style is pretty impressive.  I love the black and white combined with splashes of color.  And how can you not love the dude from Pandemic who is sporting the Mercenaries-like hairdo?  I mean seriously, you have to support that guy.

Finally, I picked up Prototype today and played it a bit tonight.  My initial impressions are good so far.  Although I ran into the first boss battle tonight which seemed like it should be a battle that should be in the latter part of the game considering the difficulty of it because you're running around at such a frenetic pace in an enclosed space that it's tough to figure out how to complete the mission and Alex Mercer doesn't necessarily do what you're trying to have him do.  I'm now a little fearful that one of the games that I was looking the most forward to in 2009 could be a letdown because of control issues at times.  I'll let you know if it persists or this initial boss battle was an aberration.  If anyone else has gotten deeper in the game, by all means, share.  I'd love to hear if it continues like that or gets better.  I noticed a lot of people playing Prototype already.

I still have a lot more to say about E3 and will continue to jibber jabber about it for a while as stuff comes to mind.

  •  Great write-up, papi! (none / 0)

Yes, I noticed that about The Saboteur as well.  A little of Schindler's List crossed with Sin City etc. etc.  I like the art style enough that I too am very interested (though I doubt I will be buying simply because I can't).

Second, good for you for trying Mass Effect again.  If they deliver on the action front for Mass Effect 2, then it really could be a huge hit - because it is so cool.

Understood about Prototype.  Apparently you get to start the game with ALL your powers, is that right?  Cool, but that may take some getting used to.  Usually games help you master each new skill as you slowly acquire them.  It may simply be a matter of not having had the game allow you that time and training.  One thing though, with a year like this, chances are almost certain that at least one highly anticipated game will be trumped by a "sleeper" hit.  Which leads me to a point I want to make later in this reply.

I need to first state, however, that Assassin's Creed 2 sounds like it will be AMAZING.  Blank was talking to me earlier tonight about it, and all I can remember is that pleasure and ladies of the night were somehow used in analogy.  TeamXbox  has made it their Best Graphics of the Show winner, and runner up of several other awards!

So, Gearheads, I have no idea whatsoever, which games I will be buying this year.

Seriously, I am like a fat kid, in the world's biggest candy store, but with only a buck to spend.  The shopping itself, whilst I drool all over my chin and shirt, is actually a thrill.  And the only way I can get the most out of my trip, is simply to stand in the store clutching my money and looking through the glass at all the colorful goodies.  By the time I actually buy something, I will have left nose smudges and finger prints all over the store.  I will have made promises to friends who came in to buy, telling them that I would be right out with the same candy they bought, but 2 hours later, they will find that I am still in the store, undecided, maybe even standing in a puddle of pee because I couldn't hold it.

So, this is my warning.  My purchase promises cannot be trusted.  This is the Year of the Game.  In fact, maybe Time Magazine's Man of the Year, is Games.  LMAO.

    •  Yeah it's going to be a tough (none / 0)

year and I don't envy you having to pick up a bunch of copies of the multiplayer games.  Like L4D2 or MW2.  It's got to be brutal on the wallet.

I've literally started saving already but I don't know if I'm going to buy as much as I originally anticipated.  I thought maybe God of War 3, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Alan Wake might also be this year.  Thank goodness it will be early next year to at least save me that.  And Mass Effect 2 isn't until next year.

So it's mostly about Uncharted 2, NHL 10 (I already have that one paid off), Assassin's Creed 2 and Modern Warfare 2 with possibly The Saboteur and maybe Halo ODST.

      •  I really can't see myself buying ODST (none / 0)

I know that I wouldn't touch the multiplayer. when the game was announced, I was really hoping for a more tactical multiplayer mode. since that's not happening, I can't see myself shelling out money I don't have for a single player experience.

        •  well (none / 0)

remember that the newly announced Firefight mode is just like Horde and its 4 player co operative play. You play as a ODST not a spartan so it will be a little harder.

People have different opinions on games and where their money will go, its understandable.
