Where is your MP Love in 2009?

Tue Jun 16, 2009 at 01:25:03 AM EDT

I know what I'm going to spend the most time playing in 2009.  It's definitely going to be Modern Warfare 2.  That's a given.  And the majority of that time will be the multiplayer, probably once I actually beat the campaign, but maybe not.  It might be sooner than that.  I'm almost as excited about leveling up in the MP as I am about an incredible single player campaign.

But here's the thing.  Outside of Modern Warfare 2, I don't think I'm going to be playing MP very often at all because there isn't really another game out there that has the compelling MP impact for my personal tastes.  I know many of you are excited about Left4Dead 2.  And there's another segment that's pumped about Halo 3: ODST.  But Left4Dead just never grabbed me the way it has many Gearheads and the Halo franchise multiplayer has felt a bit stale to me.  I mean I'm going to get Halo 3: ODST and I might give L4D 2 a chance when it's released later this year if a bunch of Gearheads buy it (although if the controls for the infected are still balls, it will be a tough sell for me).

A game that's kind of flying under the radar right now is Borderlands.  It's a game by Gearbox and Randy Pitchford and it looks like the game is going to be really freaking cool.  The good folks over at GiantBomb.com have been pimping the game hardcore since E3.  It looks like there is a ton of customization as to what exactly you can do with your individual character.  So some of the rewards you get in single player, they come over as well to the multiplayer experience.  So by pushing your character in single player and investing the time, you can bring that with you.  How cool is that?  Not only that, but they completely revamped the art style and it almost looks Crackdown-esque now. If you want to see what it looks like in motion, check out this video.

The only other game that I will probably spend some time in multiplayer will actually be Uncharted 2.  I've played the beta and I really like it.  I didn't think I would, but it's pretty fun because it's somewhat similar to the pacing of Gears and you can be a sneaky m'fer.  I can't tell you how many guys I've killed just by quickly moving into a good position and letting a guy run by me because he's trying to play it like a regular shooter and then I'll just drop the hammer on him from behind.

But Gearheads, tell me with the upcoming release schedule, what multiplayer games have caught your eye?  What do you anticipate spending the most time with?  I added a poll to see where the Gearheads anticipate spending their MP time this fall.

  •  Red Faction: Guerilla (none / 0)

Not gonna need another game for a very long time.

    •  I need that Facebook "Like This" button (none / 0)

I picked up this, and Prototype. I figured prototype would be the game of my dreams, but it turns out that Red Faction not only has a fantastic single player game, but addictive mp as well.  I'm very impressed with it. Siege is so sweet.

As for which games I'm looking forward to, definitely MW2 first and foremost.  After that, probably Forza 3.  I just popped in Forza 2 yesterday to get my car customization fix in, and I absolutely cannot wait for the next game in the series. Back when #2 first came out, I loved the flood of diaries all about the custom cars we were churning out.

  •  Modern Warfare 2 baby. (none / 0)

I'm gonna be all over that beta if/when they release it.

  •  Not multiplayer, or even this year, (none / 0)

but I cannot F*cking wait for anything Bethesda comes out with in 2010. Specifically, the new Elder Scrolls game.  It cannot come soon enough.

  •  MW2 (none / 0)

I am actually enjoying COD WAW again right now.

There are 8 new maps.  Fun.

Strange enough, I might pass on Halo OSDT.  Don't really get the point of it....

Might actually bring me back to MP.

  •  Other than Uncharted2, which I haven't played yet (none / 0)

I will be looking into L4D2 and ODST of course, but Modern Warfare 2 is just asking for some lovin.

  •  Ha ha Yesterday I pre-ordered (none / 0)

two copies of MW2 AND L4D2.  (I don't know if Play-Asia will allow that because they usually only allow one copy per customer, but so far so good.)

Anyway, my multiplayer games, which are the only ones I play anymore, will be MW2 for Gearhead fellowship time, and L4D/L4D2 and TF2. Gearheads played CoD4 for 6 months straight.  I can't imagine them playing any less this time around.

But I want to hear more about this Red Faction: Guerilla game, Gacky.  What is the appeal?  What is the game?

    •  yea I keep hearing gacky praising it (none / 0)

so Im going to have to give it a rent.

    •  I've thought about writing a diary on it (none / 0)

but I would write too much.  All I can tell you is that this might be my favorite game of all time.  It's between RF:G, Gears 1, Super Smash Bros, and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, and I've only had RF:G for about 2 weeks.  I cannot get enough of it.

        •  Seriously (none / 0)

I can remember so much awesome destruction I've caused in the single player, like one mission where you have to kill 3 guys in this big building.  I look to the top, use my nano rifle to destroy the supporting beams to the top structure of the building, and watch it collapse onto all of the building below, crushing the 3 guys along with about 15 other bad guys in a matter of seconds.  I had my jaw open for a good 10 seconds, and then I proceeded to pat myself on the back, haha.  So much fun!

          •  Thanks, Gacky. (none / 0)

I would like to know a little more about the MP though. But I can check it out myself.  Does the demo allow MP?  (I don't even know if it is available for download in Japan.  ha ha ha)

            •  I know you like customization of options (none / 0)

and the MP allows plenty of it.  Movement speed, handicap, unlimited ammo, starting weapon(s), weapon spawns, the list goes on.  There is a single player demo and a separate MP demo on XBL.  There are 5 modes:

Anarchy -  Basic Free for All mode
              Team Anarchy
Capture the Flag - You can choose if you want the carrier icon to be shown, if you want flag at home to be able to score, etc.
Damage Control - There are 3 territories in the form of very small buildings, in order to gain control of one, you have to destroy it if the enemy has control, and then rebuild it using the reconstructor weapon (my favorite mode)
Siege - Each team takes a turn as an attacker/defender.  The goal for the attacker is to destroy marked buildings in a set amount of time.  Some buildings must be 'unlocked' by destroying other buildings.  The defenders can find reconstructors to help rebuild damaged buildings, but once a building is at 0%, it cannot be rebuilt.  The attacking team that destroys the buildings the quickest or gets the most buildings wins.
Demolition - One player on each team is designated the 'destroyer.'  This player gets points for the team by destroying as many structures as he can.  This person can also see destruction-esque weapons on the map.  If a destroyer is killed, there is about a 10 second wait before another destroyer is chosen (during this period, you can vote whether or not you want to be the destroyer).

The MP has 21 levels, and the 15 or so that I've played so far are all fantastic.

There is also a party game mode called Wrecking Crew.  It's a pass-the-controller type mode where you try and cause as much destruction as possible: no killing involved.  I was shocked at how much fun Wrecking Crew is.  My friends and I play it all the time, it's an absolute blast.  There are 4 different submodes and 6 levels.  I think this mode would be good for kids, too, because there is no violence, just massive destruction.

              •  I think the Gearheads should download the MP (none / 0)

Demo and try it, even just for half an hour, at some point during the FFF.  That is, if XBL ever goes "live" again.  LOL

It is free and what better way to give a demo a shot, than to play with friends. (we really should play MP demos together more often anyway)

papi, have you tried this?  It sounds like it would be right up your alley, too.

                •  To the Keepers of the Beavers (none / 0)

Are you able to download the MP demo?  My Canadian XBL account, IP Filtered in Japan, is only showing the Single player demo (which I downloaded this morning).

(Maybe it is just the XBL glitches that Joystiq reported.)

                  •  The MP demo definitely is NOT available (none / 0)

                    for download for me, anyway.

However, I just spent some time downloading videos and the game looks fantastic.  Also, because of the destruction element (looks to reward creativity over thumb dexterity), I may be able to get some killing mileage out of it, even with my barely opposed thumbs.

(Just e-mailed Zoso and asked him to Goozex it for me. It is confirmed to be region-free!)

                •  I've actually bought the game but (none / 0)

then I got sucked into Mass Effect (yes, sucked into an RPG really for the first time in my life) so I have barely touched anything else since.  I'm like almost five hours into Mass Effect and I haven't even really left the Citadel.

But I will be playing Red Faction very soon.

                  •  Sounds like me and BioShock (none / 0)

I spent no less than 15 hours wandering the corridors of Rapture...and completely only two levels.  LOL

Zos has Goozexed RF:G for me.  #153.  Should have it in about 4 months! LOL

                    Can't wait though.

    •  Speaking of Team Fortress 2 (none / 0)

Ive never really have had the urge to get the ORange Box, but hearing yall talk about it really made me want to go and rent it, well i got to blockbuster where they did me one better, they had it for sell for 6.99, seven bucks i couldnt refuse, so i pick that up along with Oblivion, and NCAA 09.

ANyway, i havent realy played much of TF2 so if anyone wants to show me the ropes id be gratefull, ill probably be on tonight and tommorrow, since i have literally nothing to do anymore.

  •  Its all about the split-screen. (none / 0)

Since its always the wife and I playing, we of course are looking forward to ODST and maybe L4D2 which is still a maybe.  I guess I need to trade in the first L4D now while its still worth something.

Other than that it will be Gears 2 All Fronts keeping us warm and cozy.

ODST's Firefight will be pretty close to Horde except that Firefight will also have vehicles on some maps which could make for some interesting gaming.

It looks like MW2 won't get my money because it won't have the kind of split-screen I require in my games.  I'm sure glad that there are a few devs out there that know what I like.

    •  I'm with you (none / 0)

I am a huge split-screen supporter, and it really bothers me when games don't include it.  If the game is good enough, I'll still buy it, but there definitely need to be more great split-screen games nowadays.

    •  After Friday's match, it is almost all (none / 0)

      I can think about.

@Gacky, have you tried L4D?  Oh my goodness!  I just checked your XBL profile and you have never even tried the game.

Stop playing with your avatar (which rocks btw), put down the controller, and run to the store right now.

Red Faction...pffft.  No wonder!  You haven't even tried L4D yet.  LMAO.

      •  Haha no I haven't tried L4D (none / 0)

which is weird because I love zombie games.  I dunno, I just haven't really liked what I've seen from it, which is also weird because I love valve.

And my avatar, haha.  That's not me messing with it, it was roommates and friends, hence the creepy old guy with the motto of "I like boys."

        •  Gacky, it isn't about the campaign (none / 0)

it is ALL about the Versus.

You never have played anything like it.  It is like you get to see behind the Curtain in the Wizard of Oz, only instead of some withered old man pulling a few levers, it is Batman in his cave with all his gadgets.  And it is ALL about working together.

Get it now, or I will send someone over to spank you, and treat you with general disrespect.

(and it isn't "weird", it is MADNESS!)  ;)
