FFF Recap: Better Late than Never

Mon Jun 22, 2009 at 02:28:17 AM EDT

I signed onto FFF this week a little early, but the Gearheads who were on already were playing in public matches, so I popped in a little Mass Effect and got some more done on the way to trying to stop Saren and his treacherous plans.  After a while, I finally sent Blankman a message asking if he was going to play public all night and we got a private room together.

Apparently the new hotness is Warzone for the play type.  I'm not a fan.  I never was in Gears 1 and I'm not in Gears 2 simply because it allows you to finish someone off from a long, long way away.  I think it's a much more strategic game if you have to get up closer to the downed opponent in order to finish them off.  But that's just my personal opinion.  It's tough to play that game type when I literally have only been playing the other game type since 2006.

Any way, I still had a lot of fun playing Gears 2.  It had been a while since I'd played with a full room during FFF so that was really nice.  I will say that I was lucky enough to pick up the Turtle Beach X4 headset for my 360 on Friday so I used it on Friday night.  I entered a contest from a local real estate agent to win a Best Buy gift card and I actually won, so it was subsidized by a real estate agent.  Woo hoo!  And let me just tell you that the headset kicks major ass even though my wife says I look like an air traffic controller now with the things on.  The sound is fantastic and the X4 wireless works fabulously well.

Tell me what you remember from the evening.  I played so poorly that I don't really have a highlight for anything I did.  But I do remember Johann, Suns son going through pretty much our entire team at one point.  Zoso had a couple of remarkable torques.  But other than that, I don't remember much else except for some great battles for the boom under the bridge on River.

  •  Lots of fun! (none / 0)

Just thinking that I might have to play Gears 2 MP VS made me grouchy as heck on my drive home from work.  By the time I logged on, I had gotten it all out of my system and I was very relaxed about it (though I am sure there was more than one local that couldn't sleep well that night after witnessing my wrath behind the wheel ha ha).

Also, I just made sure that I was on Blank's team...so that I wouldn't get triple meleed with the torque. lol  (I am never gonna let you live that one down, Blank. LOL)

I remember Rage getting three kills with a single boom...all friendly with no enemy!  Bwahahaha  Blank shouted out Hillary!

There was a frak ton of friendly killing going on.  I personally downed Blank from behind when he was about to pick up Boom on River.  (I was so used to playing Horde where there is no friendly-fire, I was careless - down he went. LOL).  He later killed me outright with broken poison from the same position as I was trying to get the Mortar above him.

Zoso did have some SPECTACULAR sticks. Johann was top of both teams on at least one occasion.

Later, Zos, Blank, Grymm, and I played a couple/three hours of L4D.  It was so much fun I am still grinning.  Seriously, I didn't dare turn on my 360 again for the rest of the weekend for fear that it (undoubtedly) would be less fun and take the grin off my face and the joy out of my heart.

I am sporting some serious man love for Valve right now.  I am all like, "Let's draw maps for TF2 and write Zombie fiction" and shit.

Oh, and Shaun of the Dead is all that.  Hi-larious!

  •  As for Warzone, (none / 0)

Tyler, never in a million years would I have thought that I would be an advocate for it, but the fact is, it is more appropriate for Gears 2 gameplay.  It is miserable at first because you keep getting finished off before you have a chance to be revived. This is because when you first play Warzone you are thinking all wrong.  You keep thinking about how you got killed so quickly, without chance for recovery and before you had a chance to play.  You should be thinking about how completely you can take the pain to the enemy, from a safe distance and from behind cover.

The thing is, with Gears 2, there is stopping power and the Hottie.  Therefore, in Execution, when you run out to finish the kill you earned, you immediately get downed by the cover-camping bastard that practically let his friend get downed as bait.  You go down, and in the meantime, the guy you downed gets up on his own, walks over to you, and then finishes you off.  So, what should have been your kill, turns into theirs.  I cannot count the times happened to me or my teammates in Execution.

This should be taken as a compliment to Epic.  They made huge efforts to make Gears 2 much more cover based than its predecessor. With the exception of the smoke grenades (which have now been fixed - though I don't even like just the cringe) they have accomplished this.

As it is now, we have no business going out there in the open, trying to finish off our downs.  Gears 2 is a ranged game, which is ironic, because Epic put so much work into the executions.

    •  Seriously, Gears of War is an enigma. (none / 0)

I think both the designers (the whole Epic team) and the gamers (at least most of us Gearheads) suffer from a certain degree of Dissociative Identity Disorder.

I think the gameplay options, weapons/combinations are simply too complex.  It is like someone took an awesome strawberry shortcake, and then added smarties, and then Reese Pieces, and then added a couple of slices of over-ripe honey dew melon, and poured hot chocolate syrup across the top, and while looking through the fridge, they noticed a couple of left-over spare-ribs with extra sauce, and so on.

All of the flavors are everything we have always wanted, it is just that we don't know whether we are having a BBQ or a dessert party.  Cliff's grand vision works for the campaign, but not so well, perhaps, for the MP.  Too Much Birthday.
