How Far Should Motion Go?

Mon Jun 29, 2009 at 02:22:59 AM EDT

The Wii has started something that I've kind of dreaded for a while.  Each and every console manufacturer is moving towards having their own version of jumping around in front of your television set.  I think the idea of Natal is cool.  The Sony motion controller looks like it's true one-to-one motion.

But here's the thing.  I don't really know if I want to play games where they take the immersion level up to nearly real-life.  I don't want to necessarily want to sneak around in front of the camera like Sam Fisher.  Or pretend like I'm driving around like Niko Bellic.  Or pretend like I'm bending it like Beckham in FIFA 10.  Maybe it's just because I'm an older gamer and perhaps a bit grumpy about them trying to change the way I've interacted with games since the Atari 2600.

But I get my exercise at the gym.  My game time is my relax and enjoy myself time.  It isn't about pretending I'm an elite supersoldier or a Spartan fighting the Covenant in my living room.  Wait, actually it is about pretending I'm those things, but by controlling them through a device I use while I relax and sit back in my chair.  I know that the controller has been a barrier to entry to a lot of people through the years.  My wife is one of those who often has complained that the controller has too many buttons and she doesn't get the whole dual-stick thing.

At the same time, there will be good options for her with these new controllers.  Natal, Sony and the Wii are working to meet that market and exceed their expectations for ease of use.  I have no problem with it, but I just hope that all games don't go that direction or they might just lose some of the old school gamers like myself.  I don't think that they'll stop with the controller interaction at all.  I just hope that they don't go totally crazy with the application of things.  Because sometimes, pushing a button is the only thing that will do.

Where do you stand on the whole motion controlled future we seem headed for?

Imagine coming home and seeing your kids doing that in front of the tv, teabagging and all.

gestures with my gamin'.  If I want to gesture when I game, I will play paintball, or do what Kenai did this last weekend with BBs, CTF for reals.

the gun to either adopt or condemn this.  Hmmm, I think rushing to judge anything is foolish to a degree.  What Project Natal will presumably offer is a leap in gamin technology.  I'll wait to see what MS & developers will come up with and reserve my decision until then. :)

    •  A balanced and reasonable approach. (none / 0)

After being all excited about the Wii - and purchasing it - and then actually seeing to what extent it delivered (and the utter lack of top quality titles embracing the tech), I have become very cynical.  The demos of Natal showed inaccuracy and slight lag - which says to me that the problems I had with Wii Boxing and Baseball are not completely overcome.

Also, my house is very small and fragile for big gesture gaming, especially if the games were to require multiple consoles like they do now.  It is hard to consider going back to split-screen or trading off the controllers now that we have been able to play LAN style.

I CAN see, however, how fun could be had with friends, or even just family that doesn't like the typical shooter type games.  For them, I think it is great.  I applaud any innovation in the industry.

I have seen so far I don't care to much about it.  After school or work I would rather just relax with a controller.  Also I wonder if this will work properly since MS is developing it.

The only thing I would find cool about tech like this is that if I had a replica Lancer and I could actually do the proper motion when I chainsawed a Locust.

I admit that I already make a saw motion with the controller now, but swinging the actual weapon would give me a serious geek-on.

I bet I would tip over a few too many drinks though.

Other than that, I don't see much use for this stuff.

    but I'm sold on Natal...

Now I definitely DO NOT want all games to go to motion only but I do think there is potential there.

I too could care less about the physical work out opportunities (though my girlfriend is excited at the potential) however I do think there is awesome potential here.

Seeing what Peter M has already got Natal to do is impressive and just imagining what the likes of Epic, Bungie, Valve, Infinity Ward etc. could do with it just gets my blood going! =P

Like any new tech we won't really know if we'll dig it until someone does something with it.  If no one would have developed apps for the iPhone, it wouldn't be the success it is today.  Likewise, unless developers do something incredible with Natal...well, they might as well just call it Nii and focus on using it for kids games. ;)
