Summer Movies

Wed Jul 01, 2009 at 11:43:22 PM EDT

Now that it is summer, there are a bunch of shows, some good, some bad, all coming out very soon (at least for those in North America).  When I came across news of a new Michael Mann flick, that was not in production but already out, I started to think, what other movies are coming out that I don't know about.  Hence, this diary.

I will start with the one Zoso created an entire diary for.  (Be sure to click on the HD whenever available, if you computer can handle it.)

It Might Get Loud - About makin' sweet love to your ears with a pop bottle and an amp.
(Jimmy Page, The Edge, Jack White)

Public Enemies - About makin' sweet love to your eyes with tommy guns, beautiful clothes, and beautiful buildings.
(Johnny Depp, Michael Mann dir.)

Inglorious Basterds  (International Trailer with French Subs) - About makin' sweet love to your own testicles.
(Brad Pitt, Quentin Tarantino dir.)

Harry Potter and Gandalf...er The Half-Blood Prince - About ...well, no need to write abouts for every entry.  Looking forward to it though. Gonna see it two weeks from now with all the 10th grade students in my school.

Funny People - Probably about making raunchy love, half-clothed, on a dirty old couch with the springs stickin' out.
(Seth Rogan, Adam Sandler, Judd Apatow dir.)

    an AICN review (not Harry).

Mann’s fluid HD cameras glide through the heists and over the shoulders of the robbers so effortlessly that you feel like one of the gang. Sometimes Mann puts the cameras so close to people's faces, you can almost smell the sweat when a character senses that something is about to go wrong or at least not totally right. Watching the Dillinger gang pull off a crime is like watching a great movie about a Special Forces unit begin a covert mission--they move in for the quick strike, every man with his assignment, and move out before the cops can arrive and assess the situation. There's a bit of gunfire, but only enough to cause the right amount of chaos to escape behind. If a skirmish actually does break out with the law, Mann changes gears and shoots the scene like a war movie, hiding behind any protective cover while bullets explode around the actors and the camera. The camera peeks out from behind walls and cars to find out who's shooting, then retreats as soon as fire is returned. The gunplay is a far cry from the sleek, almost-choreographed battles in Mann's HEAT. Don't believe for a second this is a Depression-era version of that awesome movie. PUBLIC ENEMIES is a product of the times it is portraying, and Mann's vision of Chicago and the surrounding areas that Dillinger called home are not particularly glamorous (or even recognizable much of the time), but they do feel damned accurate.

Yeah!  Looks like this will be following in the tradition of Thief, Heat, The Insider, Collateral, and Miami Vice!

Fashion wise, I didn't "grow up" until grade twelve (1985), but I was the first (and only) kid in my school to wear a suitcoat over a Calvin Kline crew neck t-shirt (burgundy, no pastels for me).  I thought the inspiration was in part, from Miami Vice, but years later when I re-watched Risky Business, I realized it was also from "Joel Goodsen".  The smoker chicks dug it.

It is one of the things from that age of insecurity, angst, and dark thoughts, that I remember with a smile and a touch of pride.  Michael Mann and Jan Hammer were a part of that time.

    •  I just saw Public Enemies today (none / 0)

And I have to say, it was an excellent movie. It was really entertaining and the guns sounded absolutely amazing. Although it could've been me sitting in one of the front rows...! Regardless, I thought everyone played their part, and would definitely sneak in... pay again to see it. :D

Hey, I have to remind everyone that Michael Mann also made Manhunter (1986), another movie that features the character "Hannibal the Cannibal" but even more terrifyingly and skillfully cast by Brian Cox.  Though, I really enjoyed Silence of the Lamb (and have watched it many times), it isn't a quarter the movie of Manhunter, at least not as regards hunting a serial killer, getting into the mindset of the killer, etc. etc.  So GOOD!  (Dang, now I have to go rent it again!)

  •  great write up! (none / 0)

Really looking forward to Quentin's new movie. In addition to It Might Get Loud obviously, i am hoping to see a teaser this summer.... for the GEARS OF WAR movie!

to GI JOE! What can I say I am an 80's kid.

    •  I also want to see it purely for action (none / 0)

When I saw the trailer I couldn't help but think, wow so that's where Master Chief's gone instead of doing Halo 4.
      Looks good tho :)

but GI Joe is going to be garbage. I'm a huge GI Joe fan back in the days of the toys and Marvel comic. Don't expect it to be surprisingly good like the first Transformers movie. The studio screened it to a test audience, and it was so bad that they locked Stephen Sommers out of the editing room. When they decided to have all of the Joes wear black costumes rather than express their individuality, they FUBARed the flick. The spirit of GI Joe was destroyed. In addition, any movie with Marlon Wayans is going to be an epic fail. :(

Marlon Wayans is funny, but then again it's supposed to be a more serious than funny movie.

Has anyone here seen The Hangover? That movie is hilarious. It's a true guy flick. A little to vulgar at times, with some unnecessary F bombs here and there, but still worth my 8 bucks. And you have to stay for the credits, that's the best part :p

  •  This kinda has something to do (none / 0)

with "It Might Get Loud" but apparently Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, Nirvana), and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) are doing a project together and will hopefully be releasing an album this summer. Can't wait to hear it!
