Wait, SC:Conviction has MP?!

Thu Jul 02, 2009 at 07:19:32 PM EDT

Hold it.  Just one minute here.  I thought Badass:The Game (LMAO) was single player only.  Let me throw this out there.  I've no doubt that Infinity Ward will deliver with CoD6 [sic], but in all the footage, we haven't really seen anything innovative.  Sure, vehicles, and heart-beat detectors (aka radar) but that is only innovative coming from CoD4, not from the industry as a whole.  Heck, BF 1943 is coming to XBLA and it will have a TON of vehicles, air, sea and land (we should ALL get it, btw - 24player MP, for crying out loud! and it will be frickin' hilarious).

SC:C is showing innovation.  I love the UI and mission objective idea.  "Last known position" is a very slick little addition (reminds me of the fun part of playing the Scotland Yard boardgame).

There is a new video (July 1st) up at Gametrailers.

Just about the time I was feeling comfortable with my purchase choices for 2009. Doggonit!  Well, I ain't givin' up L4D2, but Batman:AA, and maybe even CoD6 may have to wait.

I warned you about this year.  I am just about ready to burst into tears.

  •  Yes, SC:C has MP. (none / 0)

Ubisoft would be foolish to drop the Spies vs. Mercs mode.  Shame on you for even considering delaying the pick up for Batman:AA, Suns.  That games just looks like it's going to rack up the positive reviews.  Then again, I'm a huge fan of the Dark Knight.

As far as MW 2 goes, I'm with you.  The "heartbeat" sensor just reeks of arcade shooter element.  This isn't meant to be Aliens the game.  Tom Clancy introduced this mechanic in Rainbow Six back in the 90s, and it reeked back then.

So far, my games that I'm committed to purchasing for the rest of 2009 are: Batman:AA, L4D 2 (yeah you read it right, I finally caved), AC 2, and MW 2.  The other games will have to wait.

      I am in tears.

(and great news about you caving!)

    •  as for L4D and L4D2 (none / 0)

(you probably already caught this highlighted over at Joystiq, though I didn't until just now) Doug Lombardi says that there will be an announcement for DLC for PC and 360 for L4D before the end of summer, and that their will also be a demo of L4D2 out before the actual game hits the shelves.

First of all, that was my only request, that Valve offer some DLC for L4D as a show of good faith, in a sense, to keep their word.  My purchase of L4D2 wasn't dependent on it, but it is definitely cool to see.

Second, planning to release a demo of L4D2 before the game is released says volumes about their confidence in the sequel.  I figured a lot of the changes would be subtle (A.I. director changes etc.), and only reveal themselves through extended play.  That must not be the case, or they wouldn't take the risk that people would play and figure the changes weren't significant enough to merit a purchase.

Tangentially related, the silenced Uzi featured in some of the L4D2 videos really does seem like it is a more solid gun than pretty much any of them that we use in L4D.  I know that both GearsChris and papi had criticism about the flimsy weapons.  I wonder if there will be a difference - if they are adding some heft to the weapons.

      •  Yeah, that news has made practically... (none / 0)

all of the game sites today.  I will forego the DLC and save my money for L4D 2.  I believe that Valve is only releasing this DLC to calm the people that are demanding their heads over the sequel's release.

Which I think is completely stupid if you ask me. L4D2 is bringing all new stuff that would practically be impossible to include in DLC. And with all the new additions it basically does justify itself as a completely new game.

          •  I agree, Grymm. (none / 0)

The content that has been shown thus far about L4D 2 does equate to this being a completely new game- not an expansion.  I've been pretty adamant about my displeasure at Valve essentially bailing on L4D, but the content does justify it as a sequel.  Thus, I'll be picking it up in November.

Given the often long duration of sequels from Valve, their L4D 2 announcement completely took everyone by surprise.  Most of the GHs will be playing L4D 2 right when it comes out, so it's all about the social aspect for me.

            •  And for those of you who don't believe Blankman (none / 0)

or Grymm, and don't read Joystiq, there is a new interview with Doug Lombardi.

              Two interesting tidbits:

              On Console Love

Getting The Orange Box out was the first time we simultaneously shipped multiplatform. We had always shipped later and it was always handled by someone else, with the exception of Half Life 2. So we finally got to a simultaneous release with The Orange Box and with Left 4 Dead we got to a simultaneous release, same Metacritic scores just like The Orange Box, but then we were one step further and supporting the game with DLC on both platforms for the same price, which in this case was free with the survival pack. So, cool, we're simultaneous and now we're treating the 360 guys with first class respect not only at launch, but also post-launch.

So we look out further and say "now we have to get the good or popular mods to the console guys," then there'll be complete parity between the PC and console.

              On DLC

Onto Left 4 Dead 2 specific stuff. Will you be offering Left 4 Dead 1 levels as DLC or installable from the disc for Left 4 Dead 2?

That's something that we're looking at right now. How to marry those communities and how to piece those things together. We've made it so that with the mod tools, if you're making stuff for Left 4 Dead right now, with very little work you'll be able to get it up and running in Left 4 Dead 2 and it's a matter of how all that interfaces and there are a lot of details that we still need to work out. But it's definitely a goal of ours to have cross-operability for those who own both games.

        •  Yes, I will save the points, too (none / 0)

  •  All (none / 0)

the other Splinter Cells had MP.....

  •  Well... (none / 0)

I never really played any of the SC games because of the MP. I was always more interested in the story. I think I played through Chaos Theory like 5 times and the way they are intergrating story this time around has me even more pumped for it.

Has anyone watched the extended cut of the gameplay at splintercell.com? Just watching Sam slam that guys head through the urinal gets me pumped.

I'll drop money on games when I want 'em. But most titles can wait. With most of us, we really have to sift through the many delicious entrees and decide what is the tastiest meal.
