I personally do not believe PC gaming are dead, especially in light of news like this.
However the shift in the spotlight of the gaming world is clear. Now consoles are producing games as pretty (Gears, GT5), as big (Oblivion, Fallout 3) and as community friendly (Halo 3) as PC games at literally half the price.
And Sean Elliot, I love your work but PC gaming is frickin' expensive.
In console gaming your system is never incompatible. (Until it Red-Rings) No worrying about needing to upgrade your console to meet demands of upcoming games. The only variable is what type of TV you are playing it on and most gamers aren't in a position to upgrade to an HDTV.
So do consumers want to spend $350 with the ability to upgrade their experience with an HDTV (whose prices are dropping) in the future? OR pay at least $1000 for a PC rig with all the bells and whistles that may be "less than" in a year.
I believe most gamers want to play games, not worry about how they're going to save up for a PC rig that they will have to be upgrading every couple of years.
Don't get me wrong I would love to be able to be a PC gamer. Have an awesome rig, be playing games only possible on my machine but I just can't drop the money on it. PC gaming: Consoles have caught up and are now selling your drug, only cheaper.
I guess my conclusion would be that PC gaming isn't dead, it's just living the high-life...in the nursing home.
Which leads to the question: With PC gaming as expensive as it is, where does it fit in the video game world? In your video game world?
Perhaps the real question should be: Is PC Gaming dead to you?
Be sure and make your voice heard and we'll discuss your thoughts and ours on the next podcast...thanks!
