A Night with the Creator

Thu Nov 27, 2008 at 12:18:40 PM EST

Last night was a night like any other.  Or so I thought...

It is Wednesday night.  Normally not a night for much gaming.

But this is Thanksgiving Eve.  Gaming with the sweet knowledge that there will be no alarm clocks to disturb the next day.

I get online and see that Blankman and company are in a private room.

Full.  damn!

So, I play some campaign (I'm up to Act 5 chapt 3), yes I'm probably the last Gearhead who hasn't finished.

Then after about an hour, I get an invite.

In the room is Blank of course, Hydro, Infidel, Hanzo, Cable, Wonka, and
Razor Hanzo.

The other two guests were people that I didn't know.

Chantaljoy and CliffyBisTHEMAN.

I'm thinking, okay... Whose friends are these?

The room has just been re-opened and a couple of us got in at the same time.  We were talking "Who has a GT saying CliffyBisTHEMAN?!".  Some sort of rabid fan out there or something.

We started the game and Blankman was on my team.  Chantal and the "Cliff lover" were on the other team.

When were were just our team of five, Blankman says...

Left 4 Dead - give me your impressions..

Thu Nov 20, 2008 at 03:36:22 PM EST

Please...

Who's played it so far?

Do you love it?

Are Gearheads going to be playing this for the next 2 weeks or for the next few months?

I am looking for a second game (after Gears 2).  Payday was today.  Money in my pocket.  Gamestop on the Horizon.

So what do I choose?  Is it COD WAW or Left 4 Dead?

And Who has gotten it already?  Is it going to be added to the FFF mix?

FFF Prep - Visit the Gearheads Wiki

Fri Nov 14, 2008 at 06:56:23 PM EST

Hey Gearheads,

FFF is starting up soon.

This is the first FFF when everyone has our new favorite game.

Hopefully we will have some great 10 player matches tonight.

One way that we could begin our multiplayer matches with an extra does of teamwork is to possibly define "what is good in game communication?"

Esuns and Blankman have put together a very good guide on the "Art of communication".  It is a good read and I think everyone will come out from there with some good ideas that help.

Take a look.  These guys are leaders in this group and have some clear suggestions on "how" to play the game.

The Wiki has a lot of other things on it as well.  Scans of MP maps for weapon location, spawn points.  There are Map strategies and weapon strategies as well.

Gears 2:  FFF - The Beginning

Sat Nov 08, 2008 at 11:19:16 AM EST

Since, I'm probably the first one up today (late night brother) I will start off the FFF recap.

Wow!

I got online around 10pm eastern and I have 45 Friends showing online and almost All of them were playing Gears 2.

I have never seen that with any other launch game.

And Launch last night..  We did!

What stories do you have?!

There were so many of us, that we couldn't possibly organinze getting rooms together.  Didn't need to, it was organic.  Just join up with someone and play all night.

Papi, Tyrus, Silentstryker, (Tyrus's friend) forgot his name... and I played Horde.

For the Horde!!

We played on casual (yes, we are lame..)

But brother let me tell you..  By the time we got to Forty, it was Tough!!

Two or three torque bows were needed to kill some of those ugly bastards!

At 2:30 am, we finished level fifty.  We were exhausted!

Papi and Tyrus were Just Carrying us other three through the waves.

Time and time again, it was those two finishing off the wave.  With us watching in hope ;-)

The ghost cam became my good friend. I spent so much time there that I got pretty good at taking pictures.  Oh well, dying is good for something I guess.. ;-)

Got Comcast - my new speeds

Tue Nov 04, 2008 at 07:06:24 PM EST

Hey, just got hooked up to Comcast today.  Looks like I will be a happy camper come Gears 2.  Hopefully no more complaints from me about lag (or being dropped for that matter...).   Should have done this a long time ago.  But Gears 2 online is enough reason don't you think?...

To Cali

To Japan

To Toledo

For Grymm, Robbins, Machete, Boxin..

Finished Fable 2 - Final thoughts / Votes

Wed Oct 29, 2008 at 10:50:28 AM EST

It was not a perfect game.  Many Glitches for me (How many different ways do I need to approach something and hit "A" before it actually "clicks in"??..

I did enjoy it for what it was.  Never played a game like this.

Good Battle sequences (Used a lot of Raise Dead to distract the enemies).  And the Dog.

And the other night Blankman popped in my room.  We chatted for a while and then he game me a Ton of Gold.

SweetTea came by later (He must not have had a Mic on), so I gave him a Stinky Piece of Cheese.  He gave me a piece of Coal.  lol..

It was a nice Diversion while waiting for Nov 6th.  Surprised that I actually finished it.  It still has some nice re-playability (after the Final Quest), For example, I got enough gold that I bought the Fairfax Castle.

lol..  I was in the Castle Master Suite, getting ready to get it on with one of the ladies that followed me in.  Just before the "Magic" moment, the butler runs in and tells me that bandits are raiding my New Castle.  Next thing I know, the bandits are in my bedroom and the proceed to kill my lady friend.  Oh well...

I give it an 8 out of 10.  Good game, but too many little issues

Fable 2 impressions

Tue Oct 21, 2008 at 09:39:11 PM EST

I just got online and I see almost everyone on my friends list is playing Fable 2.

I almost bought it today...

So what do you think so far?  I'm never really played this type of game so...

Is it just a bunch of dinking around or is there a real story to immerse yourself in?

Is it a must buy?

If so, then why?

What difficulty level will you be playing on Gears 2?

Tue Oct 21, 2008 at 09:17:38 PM EST

I never finished Gears 1 on Hard core.  I've still got a couple of chapters to finish.  I am going to do that before Nov 7th...

I am kind of a wimpy gamer.  I played COD2&4 on casual.  Some other games on veteran (Brothers in Arms), and Halo3 on legendary.  But, I'm usually playing on casual.  I suck pretty much..

Anyway, got me to thinking about Gears 2.  I am going to man up and play through the first go around on Hardcore.  Then, would then like to play co-op with someone on Insane (No way I'm going to beat Insane on Solo)...

So what about you? (Things are pretty slow around here, so I picked this lame topic to confess and promise to do better :-)

What are you going to be playing on?

Be honest.  And why?

Oh, and what about Horde mode?  Are we just going to start off on Hardcore?  Or are we gonna go whimpy and start on Casual?

I vote for starting on Hardcore...  Even if we don't get many levels at first, it would be cool to playing it at such a intense level...

Unless you've got something better to talk about...

What do you think?

My first post on the new site.

Tue Oct 14, 2008 at 09:53:35 PM EST

Okay, so since the website upgrade, I haven't posted a new diary.

What I want to talk about is all the "Leakage" of Gears 2 info.

There are new Videos of MP footage, campaign ending, etc....

I will not look at the campaign, but I am sure that there are many Gears fans that already know the ending to the campaign.

Thats too bad....

I wish Epic would have done a better job with security.  I understand that "bootleg" footage out there does help to boost the hype factor...

But why so sloppy?

I remember when the 7th (final) JK Rowlings book came out.  There was High security that No Leaks would get out until everyone got a copy on opening night.

Why do we have to deal with this?  Epic should have know that security was important?!

Any, it just takes away the fun factor (not looking), because some idiots not only Stole what wasn't theirs, but then Posted it for their One Second of Fame.

Idiots....

Anyway...  What do you think?  Did Epic/MS really botch the job on this?

Have you peeked?...  ;-)

Scariest moment in Gears

Now, everything listed may not seem scary any more, but I am thinking about the First time through the game.  Sitting alone, in the dark....  whooooooooo.

Okay, here are a few of mine in no particular order.

First time killed by the Kryll.   Lonely dark streets.  Shooting propane tanks

Crashing through the floor and being assaulted by the Wretches.  Remember scrambling up the ladder only to fall back down a few minutes later?

Last stand at the gas station.   Felt like I was at the Alamo.  Boomers stomping out of the darkness.  Running out to fuel up the Junker, looking over your shoulder in fear that Locust will be on top of you before you finish.

First time with the Bezerker.  Crash!  through the wall.  Screaming!  Not sure what to do next!

Two Boomers!   Remember the scene where one of them squashes a rat with his boot?  Then, you've got to fight them.

Facing Raam!   Not a great boss fight.  But man! it was creepy with the Kryll hovering around him and especially when he got up Real close!

I know we are all Waiting for the Game and Love to be fed spoilers.  But I am kind of pissed off that I now know about Skorge.   I probably would have peed myself the first time he jumps onto the screen.  Maybe I still will....    I want to stop watching the trailers!   Kind of like driving by an accident.  You Have to look.

Anyway, post any of your favorite Scary moments.    AND, we should ALL link up with a buddy for Co-op Gears 1 before the release.

Brothers in Arms - First Impressions

Thu Sep 25, 2008 at 01:27:33 PM EST

Since it is rare that I actually played a publicized game that someone else hasn't already beat on several difficulty levels, I am posting my first impressions for Those of You who are on the fence (got several messages via Xbox live last night "Is it good?").   Especially since gaming budgets are tight (How soon till November?!)

I qualify my impressions by a couple of things.  I have a strong interest in all things WWII.    My favorite movies are Band of
Brothers, The War (15 hour - Ken Burns documentary) and Saving Private Ryan.  Love - Steven Ambrose (Wrote D-day and Band of Brothers).

There are many levels that interest me.  One for example is "what would it feel like to be in that Time.  The Day of Days, etc..  Or "Would I have what it takes?"  I know that a game or movies can't answer that, but to see other people go through That experience is a wonder to me.   On another level, I have considered for some time now after studying that history, if today's situation in our country and world events (China, Middle East and Russia) are following a similar formula of that time period (1936 Nazi Germany).   At that time, most in our country chose to close their eyes to the looming threats.  Or saw it, but had no voice to summon our leaders to action and thus preventing many horrible events or at least being better prepared, sooner.

Okay, where was I??...   Oh yeah..

Brothers in Arms.

101st Airborne in Operation Market Garden.

The Game has a Cinematic approach.  Opening action, then the Credits roll introducing the game.  I get the feeling that this isn't just a game that is trying to rely on some new game mechanic (like Fracture demo), but is trying to find its purpose in telling a story.  This is verified by lots of cut scenes (including a brief history flashback) which is good for me, because I have never played a BIA.   Then, starts off at a relaxed pace, teaching you all the game mechanics.  Dutch Farmhouses.

Playing on Veteran.  I am about an hour or more into game time in (probably played 2-1/2 hours, though due to the tutorial and dying several times in a couple sections).  I am at the end of the first chapter,  currently on a level in the country side, where my two teams (Assault and MG team) are clearing a path for the Glider planes to land.    It has a good feeling to the game.   Having a squad at your command gives you a sense of urgency.  The Germans, so far do some flanking, so if you just set up your teams position without paying attention to the Germans next move, your team can get flanked.   So far, it seems like this game does reward you for setting them up in the right places (meaning they don't die if they are positioned well).   Due to that comfort, it gives you time to view the battlefield, pull up the tactical map from your menu and plan your next move.  "Do I flank around this side?"  "Or move one of my teams over there?"

If you have read any of the reviews, one of the big complaints is the brokenness of moving your teams.  Yes and no.  I think that I will get better at it.  Meaning, I point to a section of Germans where I want them to put fire specifically on it and instead of shooting at it, the "Move command" sends them running straight at it.  "Damn!", some times they die before I get a chance to either move them back into their original position or since they are already out there, move them to a different position.  If they die, I usually just run out into the open and get myself killed and restart at the check point.   Check points seem spaced pretty good.  Although it is frustrating dying due to a seemingly "game mistake", you don't lose too much time, since each battle sequence is broken up well by checkpoints.

There are circle indicators over the Germans.  Red means they are not being shot at and you've better get someone shooting at them or get cover.  Gray means that you can pretty much move up on them.  Unless someone keeps firing at them, they will slowly turn red again.   The circles are helpful because their absence in an area lets you know that the guy is dead.   The cinematic feature is actually pretty cool.   I've gotten several so far with something like a nice grenade or head shot.  They don't come too frequently, so it is actually a nice pause in the game when it happens.

Graphics are a bit disappointing.   Call of Duty 2 level.  It uses the Unreal 3 Engine, so I am surprised that they didn't have a better polish (shadows on guys faces during close ups look grainy) and the overall coloring is too bright.  Green is too green.   If Gears and COD4 are a 9, then this is a 6-1/2.

Don't really like the cover system.  Yes, it is good that you Have cover (left bumper to Lock in)...  But, shooting over cover was problematic.  Many times my guy just wouldn't want to pop out and fire.  So, I would just Exit cover and shoot, but now I am exposed to fire.    Sometimes it worked.   Maybe, I just need to get the hang of it...

The Achievements must be geared toward rewarding single player mode, since I've already got 100 points.   It is nice compared to let's say NHL09 (I've played probably 2-3 hours of be a pro mode and have gotten one achievement - for a hat trick).

Played about an hour or so of MP.   Pretty lame actually.   VERY Laggy.  Been dropped out of half the matches at various intervals.   Graphics are dumbed down.  I will stay away from it for probably until I finish the campaign.  Hopefully by then, there will be some patches or something.  Still, it was fun last night playing a brand new game with guys all in the same boat as me (noobs to this MP)...  "Cool, I'm the tank driver" or  "Dude, try out the bazooka".

Anyone still reading this?

Okay, finally...   I think this is one of those games that I'm not going to finish anytime soon.  Not because it isn't good, but just don't have the urge to rush through it.  Kind of like when my wife bought me "Band of Brothers" disc set for Christmas, 2004.   I watched all 12 - 1 hour episodes over the period of my 2 week holiday break.   Two episodes at a time and I was satisfied.  It was an Event just sitting down for the night and popping in the disc and going through the experience.   I guess what I am trying to say is that something about this experience so far, feels new.   I am interested in unfolding what story they are trying to tell, because they definitely are trying to tell something.   And I get to shoot the bad guys.
