Resident Evil 5 trailer

Thu Jul 26, 2007 at 09:25:04 AM EST

So has anyone seen the new trailer? Kinda resident evil 4ish but turned up to 11. It looks like they added a dodge function and added a larger number of zombies who could swarm you. It also looks like the zombies don't stop when they rush at you, where as in 4 it was "OOGY BOOGY BOOGY!!" and then they'd stop and reflect on life for a second or two before they'd attack you. The zombies in this one were tackling and slamming the guy to the ground.  Right now the game looks impressive and they're saying it will be out before 2010. Can't wait, hopefully it will trounce part 4.

Ratatouille

If you're able to get over the fact that it isn't a testosterone action feast then see it. I don't really want to spoil anything, the trailers give you the gist of what the film is about. Rat in Paris who loves good food and can cook meets up with a spineless garbage boy who can't and together they do what neither can do alone.
At my showing which was a matinee there were like 5 or 6 families.  There were parts where the kids were laughing and none of the adults were, and parts where the adults were laughing but the kids weren't, parts where everyone was laughing, and then parts where I was the only one laughing. Pay attention, lots of visual gags, such as Ego's (evil food critic) office. A few very satisfying thrill sequences where I often found myself holding my breath.  Really fun family summer movie.

Brad Bird's best? Can't really say, but when critics call him the Miyazaki of the West I laugh, because critics call Miyazaki the Disney of the East... So I wonder why they don't just go ahead and compare him directly to Walt.

Oh... And the short animated film that plays before ratatouille... Really good.

I don't understand the forza auction house.

My cars don't sell. Is it because I slap them on audi coupes or are my designs just nowhere near as awesome as I think they are?

Pac-Man Championship Edition

Thu Jun 07, 2007 at 11:19:02 PM EST

Did anyone buy this? have any thoughts on it? I'm addicted. The gameplay is still collect all the pellets but gone is the clear the board to move on to the next level gameplay that you're used to. You start of with a five minute timer and there is a small amount of dogs on each side of the board. When you clear a side a piece of fruit appears on the other, and when you collect that the empty side of the board morphs into a new maze replenished with more dots. So the gameplay is always consistent speed wise, and never like, "Awesome beat that level!" and then the speed is suddenly ramped up 5 times faster than you were prepared for. The way they control the speed in the game is also really cool, if you're kicking ass you're going to go faster, but if you're struggling the game is going to eventually slow down to speed that is more manageable for you. This is also going to curb your score dramatically, because the faster you go, the more points you're going to get.

Another one of the cool new features is how you can combo ghosts, it's not like in pacman where it's grab the big dot and eat all 4 ghosts, it's grab that dot, eat all 4 ghosts, and then try to grab another big dot and eat them again before the power up wears off. This can lead to some HUUUUUUUGE scores. Also changed is the point value of the dots, it used to just be a static 10 points, but the longer you stay alive the more points you get from each dot.

The games problems are no endurance mode, Yeah, racing the clock is fine and adds a new level of urgency to the game, but I'd kinda like to see how long I could go. Multiplayer is also missing, after pac-man vs on gamecube I was hoping for some xbl multiplayer fun. 10 bucks is alot to spend on a pac-man game, especially when you can get the original for around 5. But make no mistake, this is no mere rehash, this is pac-man zilla and if you're into besting your buddies high scores in Geometry Wars then you're going to love this just as much. At the very least try out the demo, because it doesn't seem like the excitement for this arcade title is very high, which is a shame.

Game Center CX

I learned about this show on the retronauts podcast. It's about this japanese comedian who I gather is a  casual gamer, and they sit him down and give him these really hard games and then film him playing them. It's actually really great, you'd probably get alot more out of it if you actually understood japanese, but the dire frustration this guy goes through is universally funny so it works.
He also gets to interview uber game designers like Yu Suzuki, which I'm sure would be even more awesome if it was in english. This is the kind of show that G4 needs to produce, or even translate.
I love the show, I've seen 5 or 6 episodes, but my love for the program could very easily stem from my love of retro gaming.

This guy is my hero.

This is like the most amazing video I've ever seen. Chad Warden is my freaking hero. Chad Warden ain't not fan boy, Chad Warden just likes the system that is the best. The PS Triple! This guy is a comic genius. Sony needs to hire him and turn his satire into advertising gold.

Sooooo What have you guys been playing?

Tue Apr 03, 2007 at 07:43:45 PM EST

I know you guys have been playing more than Gears. I just finished up Castlevania Symphony of the Night and I've fired up my Wii for the first time since in like 2 months to show my friend everything and then ended up downloading Star Fox 64, which I finished up this morning. I also downlaoded Curse of the Dragon which is a really cool Zelda 2ish game mixed with Adventure Island esque platforming. If you have a wii and enjoyed Castlevania Symphony of the NIght then you should probably download it. I went back to Fire Emblem on my gba, which is frustrating just because I have to restart a mission every time a character dies because they don't come back. I've also been enjoying this

And I entend to finish it before Paper Mario comes out.

HD tv help

Sat Feb 03, 2007 at 09:28:30 AM EST

I got a 23 inch samsung hd lcd widescreen tv and the picture in 720p is meh.... When I play gears the edges of the armor, especially around the shoudlers does this weird flashy thing (Sorry, I don't know actual terminology for things like that) One of the marble blast levels walls which are clear do this continual blinking thing. When I watch movies where there is alot of dust or smoke or long grass swaying in the background it becomes pixelated and annoys the hell out of me. Plus, it doesn't support most of my dvds on my 360. I'm thinking of adding maybe another 500-600 bucks which puts me in the 1300 range. Any suggestions on tvs that aren't awful?

Final Fantasy 12 or My Super Frustrating Adventure!!!

Thu Nov 02, 2006 at 08:06:31 PM EST

So I thought I'd pick up FF 12 to tide me over till gears. What a mistake that was. I haven't enjoyed a numberd Final Fantasy game since 6. The only reason I caved was because 12 takes place in the same world as the Final Fantasy Tactics games and is signifigantly less gay sci fi and more awesome fantasy. (Finally a Final Fantasy hero with both a huge scar and a beard! A.K.A. MAN!)

I turned on the game and was treated to some awesome Nobuo Uematsu classic remixes, Both main FF themes, the most well known now includes an angelic choir and what I refer to as the "The beginning the quest fanfare". I start the game and I'm treated to an AMAZING cgi sequnce that involves a royal wedding and some sweet victorian era esque backdrops. Think Gears if everything was really gorgeous and not destroyed and that's kinda what they went for. Then there is a big epic war where the guy who had just been married is shot through the heart with an arrow.  Really all I could say was wow.

So I'm hooked, the game begins and I go through a tutorial esque mode to be treated to a "HOLY CRAP AWESOME!" moment that probably wouldn't have worked out like that had I been paying attention to the games message board.

The game is awesome, at least awesome for the first 6 hours. Because then the difficulty ramps up to 11. I thought that I was going to be able to play though the game and pull in a neat story, just because that's what I've always thought rpgs were about. And it really wouldn't be so hard if it wasn't for the new battle system. Frustrating is the only thing I can say. I got my ass handed to me by a boss, so when I beat him (Took me 2 times.) I decided I'd quest to get my level up. For some reason this is when the game got really, really, really, frustrating. There is this thing they call the gambit system, which is where you program your party a.i. So if you want a healer you'd say "Hey bitch, heal anyone who goes below 50% and if no one is below 50% target and attack what the party leader is attacking." Seems awesome in theory, but in execution not so much. My party keeps getting wiped, all 6 members. Which is fine, the crap I'm fighting for the quests is tough but what isn't fine is that when I start replacing my dead meat with fresh meat they decided maybe the best course of action is to stand around like morons for a good 10 20 seconds. It normally takes me about that long to notice they're not doing anything because I'm busy controlling the party leader, that totally thows me off my groove and while I'm saying to myself "Wow, if those assholes would have done what I had programmed them to do I would have beaten that guy." I get kind of angry.

That's not where my frustration with the game ends. Oh no, the new class system is complicated too. You get points aside from exp for each monster you kill, you use these points to better your character, but not so much in the way you'd think. Lets say I want to use a long sword, well I have to make sure I put points into that, then I have to go and buy the sword. It's the same thing with armor and spells, only if you have 3 people who you point points into black magic you don't have to buy fire three times, but you do with weapons and armor. So right now I have the feeling that because I don't understand the system I've totally screwed myself over and I think my entire party is severly illequiped to do anything I need them to do.

So really what it has boiled down to is am I patient enough to try and get through a story that I'm interested in even though the gameplay is frustrating me to the point where I want to throw my controller though the screen. I like challenges, but when I get killed in Ninja Gaiden or Ghouls and Ghost I know it's my fault. In this case it really hasn't been like that at all, if I've wipped it's because my party members weren't doing what I had programmed them to do, in most cases my party members weren't doing anything at all.

This is another Mel bitches diary.

One of the many things I did while xbox live was down

Montage! I actually liked it while I was doing it but now that I watch it in a crappy low quality videol, not so much. I wasn't able to finish due to the fact that I couldn't find any other chainsaw clips in quicktime. I also couldn't find a video of Marcus surrounded by the locust, so I opted to use placeholders that have basicly just become final because I don't care enough to fix it. The timeing was thrown off near the middle but you probably won't notice it. I do because I was using musical cues as you can probably tell from the beginning. It's still decent but I think Morricone has the ability to make even the most worthless piece of garbage amazing.

New mp videos

I found these on the official forum. I've only watched one of the videos but someone got sawed in half. It was awesome. There is a curbstomp on vid 4. I guess this is just random people playing and lots of people behind them yelling but, it's entire matches which is really cool. From what I've seen so far though not a huge amount of people using cover.

The shit has just hit the fan.

All my life I've thought we, humans, are the smartest living things on the planet. I was obviously wrong. Houses, computers, airplanes, cars, trains.... Mean absolutely nothing when there are people alive and able to breed who would pay for/create a service like this. Man kind, you're sooooo dead to me... I have no more faith it's all gone. This proves there can be no God, because God would surely smite someone who is this stupid.

Sure some of you might say "Don't you think you're taking this a little to hard?" To which I will respond "NO YOU FUCKING MORON! PEOPLE ARE PAYING FOR FUCKING POINTS THAT DO NOTHING THAT DON'T SERVE ANY FUNCTION! THEY'RE JUST FUCKING THERE AND THEY DON'T DO ANYTHING! THEY DON'T GET YOU ANYTHING! IT'S LIKE THROWING MONEY INTO A BIG HOLE BECAUSE YOU DON'T WANT TO BUY DIRT TO FILL IT!" and then  I'll slap you across the face.
